It's simply the outcome of a 3-2-1 vote of selectors who study individual football talent for a living. They tend not to place a lot of weight on stats at the linebacker position because those stats are influenced by many other things beyond the linebacker's own talent. Jewell was slowed a bit by injury, which matters in a tight field. Jewell can still receive write-in votes on the finalist ballot.
Team records don't play a factor. Luke Kuechly won the collegiate trophy at Boston College with just two wins that season. Kuechly turned out to be one of the best in the NFL and has won two pro Butkus Award trophies.

Sure they don't. The award has been given out for 32 years...
- in 26 of those years the winner has come from a team ranked in the top 20
- in 19 of those years, the winner has come from a team ranked in the top 10
- in 14 of those years, the winner has come from a team ranked in the top 5
So since the award has been given, it's gone to a player on a top-20 team 81% of the time; a player from a top-10 team 59% of the time; and a player from a top-5 team 44% of the time. That's nearly HALF of all Butkus Awards given going to a player from a top-5 team. And only 6 years out of 32 that it's gone to a player from a team outside the top 20.
It's been given out for 17 years since 2000...
- in 14 of those years the winner has come from a team ranked in the top 20
- in 11 of those years the winner has come from a team ranked in the top 10
- in 8 of those years the winner has come from a team ranked in the top 5
So since 2000, it's gone to a player on a top-20 team 82% of the time; a player from a top-10 team 65% of the time; and a player from a top-5 team 47% of the time. Again, almost HALF of the awards given since 2000 has gone to a player from a top-5 team. And only 3 years out of 17 it's gone to a player from a team outside the top 20.
But I'm sure this is purely coincidence. Pretty slippery of him to use Kuechly as an example, as if it's the norm.

I didn't get a response. Maybe cuz I told him that he and the committee had their heads up their asses.
Clearly the Butkus award has become just another 2nd tier award, led by a group that is politically driven, into kissing rings and is now relegated to chasing donations from “blue blood” alumni organizations to keep the award organization afloat. I get it, it’s a business.
But, such a loss in its credibility. A very sad day for the Butkus family.

I hope you sent an email with this written in it because it's spot on.
I believe I read a piece earlier this week that after the game he made it known to his teammates that if they weren't all-in they could get the f*** out, or something to that effect.
