I'm sure this vaccine will be legit, just in time for the election

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has notified public health officials in all 50 states and five large cities to prepare for the distribution of a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as late October/early November reports the New York Times.

The CDC sent out guidance the same day that President Trump told the nation in his speech to the Republican National Convention that a vaccine may arrive before year-end.

China and Russia have approved COVID vaccines without going through those pesky phase III trials. Effectiveness and safety are highly overrated.

I say we join the likes of China and Russia for healthcare-related matters!!!!

Jeesh. If it didn't come out until next Spring, people would be screaming that Trump didn't do enough to push it along. They'd be screaming there's no plan in place for the rollout. Why does everything have to be political?

Fauci, hero of the left, made a point that it isn't political. There's a medical review board that decides these things. It's going to take awhile for production and everyone to get their dose(s). That doesn't even include the late adopters.

Well...I guess it depends on whether you want a vaccine quickly.

Or you want one that is proven safe and effective.

Why can't it be both? Why do you assume it has to be one or the other? SARS has been studied for over 10 years. While this is a different variant with it's own characteristics, it's not completely unique.

It would be fantastic to have a vaccine ready to rollout to 350 million Americans 60 days from now.

Does that sound remotely plausible?

Hell, whenever a company working on a vaccine gets a hint of decent progress, there are multiple breathless stories in the media (that help boost stock prices). Yet we have heard noting from any of them recently, but now we will have a magic, safety approved vaccine TWO MONTHS from now!?

Some of ya’ll need to upgrade your bullshit detectors. 😂😂

Remember when the CDC was a trusted source? Then along came COVID and they pissed it down their leg time after time after time..... and yet people keep going back to them for recommendations. At what point do we call a spade a spade?

59 days to complete phase III safety and efficacy trials? A full scientific and FDA review during that window??? The last I heard, the major drug companies weren’t even getting the full 30,000 test subjects across a full demographic spectrum. That is vital to make sure there’s no side effect that impacts a smaller subset of the population.

This reeks of using federal resources for political gain. It’s all just a show to this administration.

They aren’t mutually exclusive.

If the politicians just let the state’s work, there is a practiced planin place for mass immunizations. All from the fallout of the anthrax attack in the early 2000s. Probably needs t be a bit updated.

The hard part is figuring out who is going to get the immunization. There won’t be enough to go around.

Your last sentence is one that many people are failing to realize. Once the vaccine comes on line, most people are going to be pretty far down the list before they get access to it. A lot of people think that on December 1st when it's available everyone will be taken care of. That's a bad expectation.

Guess what there is no vaccine for? Despite being studied for over a decade?

There needs to be federal guidance on who has priority. It’s a federally funded vaccine and Iowans should have the same priority list as those in Illinois.

The "standard regs" require 1 year of followup on a min of 3000 vaccinated subjects before safety is fully established.

That is almost certainly one of the rules that will be bypassed. And during a pandemic, that's probably the right call. But they should require SOME established subset of that, like 3 months, and re-review at 6 and 9 months, being prepared to cut off more vaccines if something crops up.

Lots of money to be made selling corona: HCA was down over 4 billion in gross revenue from Q4 last year yet still netted the same amount in the disastrous Q2 this spring.

It's prep. It's planning ahead.

Damn it. Well, you can have mine.

It's clear it's just political for you. It's just planning at this point. I'll bet you were screaming about lack of PPE planning a few months ago.

Just another excuse to attack Trump. Love Fauci when he spouts news you like, but ignore him when the news might possibly benefit Trump.

I expected that from you. You might want to do a little research before you dig a big hole here. Let us know exactly what the differences are in protocol, and how those differences affect the trials.

You really just want everything delayed as long as it hurts Trump and helps your faulty projections.

No; that is literally "the standard".

The FDA has laid out clear criteria for the full approval of a vaccine: It should reduce the rate of symptomatic Covid-19 disease by 50%. Equally important is that the data should suggest it’s highly unlikely that the vaccine could possibly be less than 30% effective. Any vaccine less effective than that would be useless.
The agency also said that there should be safety data of a year or more for at least 3,000 patients. There’s no way to shorten that timeframe, and it is one of the reasons experts believe the FDA could grant a Covid-19 vaccine an emergency use authorization, rather than full approval.
