After a year off, Ryan Sweeney is ready to get his professional baseball career going again.
The former Cedar Rapids Xavier prep has signed a minor-league deal with the Minnesota Twins that includes an invitation to spring training.
Sweeney, 30, was released last spring by the Chicago Cubs and did not play at all in the 2015 season, though he did get paid the final year of a two-year deal he signed prior to the 2014 season with Chicago. His take-home pay for not playing was $1.75 million.
Sweeney is a career .276 hitter in 682 career MLB games. He could make the Twins as an extra outfielder in 2016.
