C19 numbers are rising...

Updated Iowa C-19 trends through today:

Hospital admissions for C-19: Daily average for the last 10 days is up ~6.7% over the previous 10 day average

ICU C-19 patients: Daily average for the last 10 days is up over 7.2% over the previous 10 day average

C-19 Hospitalized: Daily average for the last 10 days is up ~7.1% over the previous 10 day average

Still increasing trends but has cooled a bit compared to a week ago. We should be trending down IMO, not up.
Admits are down 30% today from yesterday. 55 admitted yesterday 39 today.

This is a bit concerning considering the majority of people over 65 are vaccinated now. So, what age groups exactly are being hospitalized? I thought we were told that hospitalizations would go down once Seniors were vaccinated?

@artradley any ideas as to what is going on? I'm hoping this is the last and final surge, if you will.

There is a theory that covid-19 has a nature level of infection. This natural level is effected by all the obvious stuff like vaccines and herd protections. If we are too high, it drops. If we go too low it rises. Nobody believes the number of cases will just continue to drop to zero.

So the cases are rising for the same reason they were falling - it going to its natural level.

Perhaps, can you provide a link to that?

I've always assumed that C-19 would become endemic in society like many similar viruses, the only question is how much into the background it will eventually recede to. It remains to be seen and only time will tell.

Hes not wrong - control what you can and dont fret about what you can't. Its actually the perfect attitude.
I'm not fretting about it. Just making an observation about the data.

You read way too much into posts, newbie.

Fair enough. I just meant hopefully this is the last increase we see for a while.

Do you really expect that cases and hospitalizations will never increase again?
Because that is not realistic.
The overall trend is very positive.

no you weren't, you said, "That's a great attitude to go through life with ...". You're the one "reading too much into posts" when you start a commentary on attitudes in an online forum talking about a virus.

I haven’t paid much attention to hospital rates, but my guess is most 60+ folks still aren’t vaccinated. I don’t think most states did aggressive outreach to older folks, they just said “vaccines are available, now you just have to figure out how to get it.”

Then they aggressively started making it available to younger folks. My 56 year old wife and 24 year old son are fully vaccinated. My 21 year old daughter will be fully vaccinated this weekend. At 64, I will be the last one in our family to be fully vaccinated.

According to the CDC, 77% of people over 65 have had one dose and 58% have had both.

Get that shot, Art!

ICU C-19 patients: Daily average for the last 10 days is up 17.6% over the previous 10 day average

C-19 Hospitalized: Daily average for the last 10 days is up 10.0% over the previous 10 day average

Not the direction we want to continue taking.

We went from just under 1 in 10,000 people getting infected daily to just over that.

That's it I'm locking myself inside!!!

Latest weekly update to the Iowa C-19 data I'm continuing to track:

Hospital daily admissions for C-19: Daily average for the last 10 days is up 2.3% over the previous 10 day average

ICU C-19 patients: Daily average for the last 10 days is up 4.0% over the previous 10 day average

C-19 Hospitalized: Daily average for the last 10 days is up 1.6% over the previous 10 day average

Although these three core metrics I've been tracking are still rising (bad), the increases are cooling off substantially compared to the previous three weeks (good).

Get vaccinated and be kind to each other. Hopefully next week's report sees some decreases, that's what I'm hoping to see at least.

Have a great weekend.

According to world o meter, Iowa's new infections continue to trend down. They are currently under 500 for a 7-day moving average. And as to "testing", why should asymptomatic people get tested?
And yes, I AM vaccinated

There’s probably lots of variations on the theory, but maybe this is what @pablow was talking about?
•”The denser the population, the more people are susceptible, and the more infective the virus, the larger R0 will be for a given virus; the faster the rate of removal of infected individuals, by recovery or death, the smaller R0 will be.”

I’m not sure if you’re asking me this or not? Note that I’m not reporting new cases, it doesn’t interest me and doesn’t really reflect what’s happening. Admissions, ICU cases and active hospitalizations are where the rubber meets the road statistically IMO.

Glad to hear you’re vaccinated. I get my second dose tomorrow as well.

How about deaths? 7-day moving average of five that is now trending downward. The fear porn is losing its grip on the people.

I track them but the reported numbers are so delayed as to not be worth reporting. For example 8 new deaths reported today. But looking at the daily totals only one in the last three days. Why? It doesn’t make any damn sense. Since the data is so stale I don’t bother with it. My three reported metrics reflect daily activity related to active infections, that’s the best I can do with the data provided.

You think my data updates are fear porn? They’re only numbers which reflect trends. Perhaps you fear them, I just find them interesting and appreciate their ability to give me some insight as to what’s going on in my neck of the woods.

Are you vaccinated? If so, why do the numbers matter?

Are you vaccinated? If so, why do the numbers matter?

Yes, because it’s about more than just me.

It’s about full stadiums on game day.

It’s about kids going back to school safely.

It’s about my fellow Iowans who can’t be vaccinated.

It’s about recovering our local economies.

I could go on and on.

The Iowa C-19 numbers continue to get better. Here's my latest data update through today's reported numbers:

Hospital daily admissions for C-19: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 15.2% over the previous 10 day average

ICU C-19 patients: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 10.5% over the previous 10 day average

C-19 Hospitalized: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 7.3% over the previous 10 day average

This is great news folks. After several weeks of increases we're now seeing the first declines in any these metrics in the 4 weeks since I started reporting them here. And to see declines in all three areas gives me hope that this is finally starting to fizzle on a permanent basis, at least here in Iowa.

Keep it up, stay safe and get vaccinated if you have not already done so.

And have a great and safe weekend as well!

Just thought I would resurrect Joel's fear porn thread. Hospitalizations flat. Most recent report is 181 statewide. 7-day moving average of new cases has declined from 500+ in April to <400. 7-day average for deaths has been between 3-5.

This is a great read, a few highlights:

Lurking among the jubilant Americans venturing back out to bars and planning their summer-wedding travel is a different group: liberals who aren’t quite ready to let go of pandemic restrictions. For this subset, diligence against COVID-19 remains an expression of political identity—even when that means overestimating the disease’s risks or setting limits far more strict than what public-health guidelines permit.

For many progressives, extreme vigilance was in part about opposing Donald Trump. Some of this reaction was born of deeply felt frustration with how he handled the pandemic. It could also be knee-jerk. “If he said, ‘Keep schools open,’ then, well, we’re going to do everything in our power to keep schools closed,” Monica Gandhi, a professor of medicine at UC San Francisco, told me.

The spring of 2021 is different from the spring of 2020, though. Scientists know a lot more about how COVID-19 spreads—and how it doesn’t. Public-health advice is shifting. But some progressives have not updated their behavior based on the new information. And in their eagerness to protect themselves and others, they may be underestimating other costs.

Some progressives believe that the pandemic has created an opening for ambitious policy proposals. “Among progressive political leaders around here, there’s a lot of talk around: We’re not going back to normal, because normal wasn’t good enough,” Goldstein said.

Back with my weekly update on the Iowa C-19 data:

Things continue to get better, now two weeks in a row with declines in the three core metrics through today's data update (5/6/2021):

Hospital daily admissions for C-19: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 7.7% over the previous 10 day average. Not as great a decline as last week's report, but we'll take it.

ICU C-19 patients: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 13.6% over the previous 10 day average, an even larger decline from last week's report. Very nice.

C-19 Hospitalized: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 11.2% over the previous 10 day average, again a bigger percentage decline when compared to last week's report.

We're headed in the right direction and, dare I say, creating a trend that's encouraging for our return to normalcy, full football stadiums, festivals, concerts etc. We should continue to do our best to mitigate spread and for goodness sake, if you haven't been vaccinated yet, get it done. Don't be an agent for letting this virus linger any longer than necessary.

I'm stoked to be seeing this and reporting it, LET'S GO!

Back again with my weekly update on the Iowa C-19 data:

Things continue to get a little better, now three weeks in a row with declines in the three core metrics through today's data update (5/14/2021), but we're leveling off and my concern is we are headed back to increases here soon:

Hospital daily admissions for C-19: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 0.3% over the previous 10 day average. This isn't great news, I was hoping for a more significant decline. Down from an aggregate sum of 294 to 293.

ICU C-19 patients: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 2.1% over the previous 10 day average, not great either, but a decline nonetheless. Down from an aggregate sum of 429 to 420.

C-19 Hospitalized: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 7.2% over the previous 10 day average, again a less impressive percentage decline when compared to last week's report.

Come on folks we can do better than this, we should not get complacent now. Get vaccinated now if you have not already done so. Have a great and safe weekend HROT.

Back once again with my weekly update on the Iowa C-19 data trends:

Things are getting better folks, now four weeks in a row with declines in the three core metrics through today's data update (5/20/2021), :

Hospital daily admissions for C-19: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 16.9% over the previous 10 day average. Down from an aggregate sum of 308 to 256.

ICU C-19 patients: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 4.8% over the previous 10 day average. Down from an aggregate sum of 437 to 416.

C-19 Hospitalized: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 18.1% over the previous 10 day average. Down from an aggregate sum of 1,828 to 1,497.

It's great to see again double digit decreases in the daily hospital admissions and overall hospitalization numbers, let's hope that continues. The ICU numbers could be better, but a decrease is a decrease nonetheless. If you end up in the ICU for C-19, chances are you're in for a long struggle or worst case scenario, they carry you out under a sheet. Don't be that guy, get vaccinated, be safe and enjoy the warm weekend ahead.

C-19 Hospitalized: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 17.2% over the previous 10 day average. Down from an aggregate sum of 1,579 to 1,308.

Hey! I'm back again with my weekly Iowa C-19 data update.

This week's report has me really stoked, I'm as fired up as I can ever remember since I started posting these weekly updates sometime ago, and this week's numbers are the best yet IMO. Here's what has been reported by IDPH through today's data update (6/3/2021):

Hospital daily admissions for C-19: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 21.2% over the previous 10 day average. Down from an aggregate sum of 226 to 178.

ICU C-19 patients: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 37.8% over the previous 10 day average. Down from an aggregate sum of 405 to 252.

C-19 Hospitalized: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 22.5% over the previous 10 day average. Down from an aggregate sum of 1,375 to 1,066.

This is so outstanding and the downward trend even accelerated this week. Let's keep this going!

I'm looking forward to seeing daily admissions averaging in the single digits/day, ICU census dropping into single digits as well and having total hospitalized fall below a 50/day average. We can get there hopefully sooner than later!

Get vaccinated if you haven't (WTF are you waiting for anyway!?) and enjoy the blast of summer weather heading our way this weekend. Stay safe and have fun!

Back again after two and a half weeks have passed since my last report on 6/3/2021. So how is Iowa doing now compared to my last report? Today's comparison utilizes the data from Iowa DPH through 6/20/2021:

Hospital daily admissions for C-19: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 23.0% over the last 10 day reported average on 6/3/21. Down from an aggregate sum of 178 to 137.

ICU C-19 patients: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 27.4% over the last 10 day reported average on 6/3/21. Down from an aggregate sum of 252 to 183.

C-19 Hospitalized: Daily average for the last 10 days is down 30.3% over the previous 10 day average reported on 6/3/21. Down from an aggregate sum of 1,066 to 743.

Iowa continues its excellent downward trend, great news when you consider some of the other state's resurgences with the more easily transmitted and apparently more deadly delta variant. We're looking better and better and hopefully the trend continues through the summer and fall. We're now averaging less than 15 patients admitted per day, less than 20 people statewide in ICUs every day and less than 75 people in all hospitals statewide daily on average for the C-19 virus. A mere 6 months ago daily admissions were ~94/day, ICU daily average patient census were ~153 and we were averaging ~732 total hospitalized C-19 patients. What a turnaround! It's amazing the effect that vaccination has had on the health of the people in Iowa.

Good stuff folks and as always, stay safe, healthy and happy and encourage people who haven't gotten vaccinated to get it done ASAP.
