"Clark is cognizant of the racial underpinnings of her stardom. “I want to say I’ve earned every single thing, but as a white person, there is privilege,” says Clark. “A lot of those players in the league that have been really good have been Black players. This league has kind of been built on them. The more we can appreciate that, highlight that, talk about that, and then continue to have brands and companies invest in those players that have made this league incredible, I think it’s very important. I have to continue to try to change that. The more we can elevate Black women, that’s going to be a beautiful thing.”

So disappointed she bent the knee to the woke mob and a league that hates everything about her after being apolitical up to this point.

That's not being woke ... it's just being reflective and considerate.

The majority ethnicity in this country is caucasian ... and there are distinct advantages that go along with it. If you're a talented white athlete in this country ... you're usually going to get proportionally more attention than your black counterparts. Of course, some folks erroneously peg this observation as a reflection of racism ... but it's not ... it's simply a result of (unconscious) in-group vs out-group sociological dynamics ... and a reflection of a "numbers"-game. Of course, imagine for a moment that you're an exceptionally talented athlete who is not white ... and you see yourself getting less attention than other players (of comparable talent) simply due to your appearance. Were I in that situation .... I know that I'd be irritated about it.

Yes. This is exactly why there are so many more white athletes than black in sports.

Sad to see that she finally bent the knee. But strange that it's coming now after all this time. Almost feels as though her agent/the WNBA told her to say this. Basketball is a black majority sport, white players are seen as objectively worse on every level, there is no white privledge in basketball. Black players are worshipped, most white players are the butt of jokes.

The WNBA is an objectively worse product than the NBA, we have the financials and TV ratings to prove it. People aren't rejecting these players because they're black, they just don't care about them because they provided a poor product. Are there good players in the W? Yes, and Caitlin was the way they could show the world that the W is better than we thought. This is because CC's game is unlike anything we've seen from a woman before.

However, CC has only exposed the blatant racism and hatred in the W. CC joining the W should have been a celebration for all players, but we all saw how that turned out.

I just hope she knows that no matter what she says, they'll never care about her. To them, she's a tool, a mouthpiece for their agenda. Once she's proved her usefulness, they'll toss her aside. But maybe this will finally take the heat off her from psycho players who are ready to either gouge her eyes out or tackle her to the floor?

Until we stop labeling people by the color of their skin, ethnicity, etc., racism will continue to be an issue in society.

And yes, I used said labels in my post above to sarcastically illustrate a point from the post I quoted.

We need to get to the point where people are people and stop trying to differentiate/judge/label everyone by external characistics that they have no control over. MLK hit it on the head with "content of character, not color of skin."

The underlying implication is that people haven't watched the WNBA because it's mostly black women and they're racist. No, it's because the product has been crappy. The NBA is mostly black men but that didn't hinder its popularity because it's an entertaining product with a lot of great players and personalities. Clark elevated the league because she's a generational (or more) talent who's exciting to watch. Tiger Woods did the same for golf. Jordan did it for the NBA.

CC has to walk a tightrope. On one hand, the contributions of black players have helped build the WNBA, and she probably does benefit from being white to some degree. On the other, the WNBA is not a good product, and her talent and hard work is responsible for the vast, vast majority of her success. I don’t have any problem with her statement, as always she’s being well-spoken and considerate. Many of the current WNBA players, media, and college coaches could learn from her example because they’ve behaved abominably towards her.

Clark was recognized because she is a great basketball player but even greater person staying out of the pettiness that tried to attach itself to her. She is a great role model not just as a basketball player but as an even greater person.

I can't imagine being so insecure that you would get upset at Caitlin for pointing out the obvious.
The obvious is that until last year, nobody really cared about the W, now more do. It's fine that she points out the trailblazers should get their due respect. Pointing out any of them being black makes it a different issue, in my opinion

Try to consider what she's saying. A lot, (certainly not all) but a bigger majority of the stars who built the league were black women. CC22 is in the difficult position that her tremendous stardom is being credited by many as being largely because she's white. What she IS saying is that this narrative is just as disrespectful to her (that much of this attention is because she is white), as is not recognizing that without those who came before her building the foundation for her sport, even she would not be in this position today. I think thats a well reasoned response. Honestly, if both sides of this would take a step back, it would probably be a really good thing.

She's saying that making any of this about the color of someones skin disrespects everyone including her. Its just like her statement in the article about people wanting her on the olympic because it would draw more eyes, was not what SHE wanted. She wants to be chosen based off her merits as a player.

Maybe they won't try to kill her now with hard fouls and cheap shots, moving forward.

Caitlin plays chess and collects her $11M annually when everyone else is playing checkers at the kid's table. She ain't dumb. ;)

THIS! ^

I mean, it's pretty obvious that Caitlin would have less of a gravitational pull if she were Black. It's okay to both acknowledge that AND her incredible talent (Pete Maravich's record...hello). The amount of stardom added by her being white is up for debate, but both the people who claim that she only getting the attention she is because she's white AND the people who claim her being white has zero effect on the level of her stardom are both full of crap.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the "W" next season as far as the attendance and the viewership. I think a very large part of the success this year was it went from the NCAA season, to the tournament and then the WNBA season. It was constant coverage of CC, all of her perceived rivals, etc. Now we have a rather long break with just the NCAA and while JuJu and Paige are certainly talented, it simply isn't the same coverage/interest as last year, despite all the medias attempts to wish it in to being so.
We as a society are very much "out of sight, out of mind" so I'll be curious it things remain as they were, or start falling off.

It's a little disappointing she did it. Her work ethic is insane, and to discount all you've put into making yourself one of the best players in the world is a little sad. White girls shouldn't have to feel like their success is just a product of inherent racism. I just wanted her to continue playing ball and staying above the discourse.

This misses her point badly.

Good Lord. She never said all her success was because she was white. Is it possible she's just saying that her mega stardom could in some part be attributed to the majority of new fans sharing her skin color? CC is a transformative star, (of that there is no doubt), but do you really not think brands like Nike and Gatorade weren't thrilled to use CC as an in for marketing a wider sports audience, mainly dominated by black athletes? In EVERY interview she's done , the one thing she's consistently states is "I earned this". How is that her discounting all her hard work? Maybe shes realized that with the huge platform she now holds, comes an opportunity to bring about change in this ongoing conflict.

It's ok to just watch someone play basketball and think they're awesome. We don't need an academic review on why.

That's pretty what staying woke is, and unfortunately people hate it.

Bingo….well sort of….Michael Jordan, Tiger and Serena breaks your paradigm, but your premise that her words are not woke is certainly accurate.

1st and foremost, people who pick their heroes and friends by political affiliation are like the nut jobs getting made fun of on YouTube all the time.

2nd, the “woke” hard core left makes me shake my head, but being cognizant of life, history and everyone’s struggle is empathetic and compassionate and what we all should strive for.

Admitting women, black folks, others have had different experiences doesn’t make you woke, or a leftist. It only makes you aware.

It also doesn’t mean every woman or black person had it worse than every white man did and so forth. (See comments above about Jordan, Tiger & Serena) That’s what the leftist do. They speak in definitives and paint with a wide brush.

Life is nuanced and I would echo her sentiments and I’m anything but “woke”

What you guys really wanted was for her to keep her mouth shut 😜

That's true, you can. But those athletes are also human that can recognize, support, and celebrate those that came before them that may not have had the recognition or platform as her.
She can absolutely do that. I also have eyes and can see the people she's lifting up have done nothing but diminish her at every turn. 17% of the tech fouls committed all last season were against Caitlin. Why disgruntle your fanbase to gain favor with current and former players who will never accept you.

I haven't watched her since she gave Swift a thumbs up about supporting Harris. She's a talent but it doesn't mean I have to spend my $$ supporting her. You reap what you sow.

Yowzzaa is that strong….I don’t believe you and I have ever been sideways but seriously?! 😒 Im pretty middle of the road and I’m trying not to get caught up in one of those stupid ass dialogues that is typically started by “someone else” and then three days later they try to pretend like I or people in my camp started it…

With that said this hard, left, academic “woke” media driven ideology in our country, literally baffles me to the point I can’t believe these kind of people can find their way out of their own houses…

But not watching somebody because they decided to support a person who supported Harris is bizarre and only 4, 5 clicks away from those leftists.

Hell, I didn’t miss a game she played and I won’t next year either. In fact, I think I’ve become a bigger Caitlin Clark fan than I am an Iowa Hawkeye fan. Now, if she eventually turns LeBron James on me, who knows I may rethink my position, but I don’t envision that happening. And honestly LeBron has walked it back a great deal himself.

The real threat to our country is the universities, the media and the politicians. Though admittedly, this last election has kind of shown people have come out of the ether.

But don’t hate on CC😜

You obviously watched or heard Megyn Kelly's disapproving take on Caitlin's "white privilege" comment. Your last paragraph almost paraphrased it completely. Sorry you got so sucked in by Kelly's biased opinion.
