We are so lucky she chose the University of Iowa.

She EASILY could have played at a different school.

It's a treat that we have been a part of her journey.
Like Notre Dame (where she committed first) or bite your tongue ISWho.... o_O

Nice photo of Clark! And a nice accolade even if Time magazine is a dying media.

*Kills me that people think Iowa should be playing the same way they did with CC22. Do they even understand what Iowa had on the court the last 4 years?
Probably not. Hell Kate Martin would be the top player on this team, And thats no disrespect to the current players.....

I think that it ended up being a great marriage for BOTH sides.

Iowa benefitted as a team and a program by having a supremely talented player on the roster.

Caitlin benefitted by being part of a program that let her be herself. Perhaps, more importantly, the coaching staff also invested heavily in her on many fronts ... helping her be more reflective, helping her navigate the media, helping her be a better teammate, etc ...

I think that Caitlin obviously could have played at a different school ... but I think that her degree of stardom wouldn't have been the same at all places.

Kate Martin went to work in the 4th quarter vs. UConn. It's not a mistake (or a Clark-ride) she's headed to year two in the WNBA.
Kate was definitely a special player for the Hawks ... but I think that her greatest attribute was that she was a "glue-player" that everyone would want to go to war with. She helped smooth out ego conflicts too ... she helped the rest of the team make peace with the fact that Caitlin was the superstar ... and that it was okay for others to not be (the superstar). For super-competitive athletes ... that can be a bitter pill to swallow. However, when you have a team leader like Kate get the other players appreciate the how heavy the "crown was" that Caitlin wore - that's a multiplying factor for the team as it relates to chemistry and productivity.

Absolutely. Bluder's staff did a fantastic job navigating what could have been a real mess, and turning it into something really special...

Well said, Ghost. Your comments are insightful and accurate. CC almost certainly would have enjoyed a much less stellar career at UConn, to name one of many, many blue bloods that would have forced CC to be a "traditional" player. No logo threes. No fancy passes. Most every other program would have put her in a straight jacket, and her true talent may never have fully emerged.

Few people realize that it takes an amazing confluence of events for a Caitlin Clark to emerge into the unprecedented star she has become. Lisa Bluder and staff, CC's parents and siblings, her Hawkeye teammates, the Iowa fans, modern technology . . . all those elements and more had to merge in just the right way at just the right time. And because they did, we continue to enjoy the phenomenon that is Caitlin Clark, Time's Athlete of the Year.

Not Shoei Ohtani, not Patrick Mahomes, Not LeBron or Nikola Jokic . . . a young woman from Des Moines, Iowa, who has shown generational talent combined with maturity far beyond her years. That's your 2024 Athlete of the Year.

I think emerging at the same time as NIL skyrocketed her. Amazing players have come before her, amazing players will come after her, but she was able to market herself like no other women's athlete has before. Not only electric on the court, but she was in commercials, billboards, and celebrities were wearing her jersey everywhere.

No one I know is saying that. What people I know - including me - are saying is that she is an incredible player that we miss seeing play. Relatedly, it will be very interesting to see what happens with ratings this year in the college game. I'm too close to the fire to be objective, but I think when Caitlin left the college game she took most of the air out of the balloon with her. I am trying to watch the Iowa women play but it is just ordinary basketball that I didn't really care to watch before Caitlin. Many who post here will be offended by that, but the heart wants what the heart wants.

You said it. Taurisi, Bird, and Stewart, calling the game on ESPN 2, were openingly amazed at Kate's 4th quarter heroics. They might just have made her WNBA career. Stewart is very stoic, but her head was shaking watch Kate.

Kind of, but Fans and celebrities didn't fill arena's because Clark had a State Farm commercial. Juju has ALL the same opportunities, and no bodies filling their gym to see her play at home or on the road. Why? CC22 was just different, in the way Tiger was different.....

Well then, you would fit into the category I am referring to. So, not an Iowa basketball fan--gotcha. That's okay, someday the WNBA will have a forum for fans of players in the WNBA.

And I'm sorry you can't enjoy the Iowa team without her. Most fans are along for the ride as IWBB rebuilds toward the future---the one without the former player/s.

You are on an Iowa Women's Basketball forum. I'm the one that's miserable? You might rethink that.

If they would create a Caitlin board, I would post there. You and a handful of other posters just look to be offended by everything and make posting on this board annoying. In the meantime, you are in a Caitlin Clark thread where topics like Caitlin Clark are discussed.
