I saw this raised somewhere as a possibility in light of the new red-shirt rule. However, I thought he was red-shirting due to academic requirements. I admittedly know very little about how these things work, but was curious if anyone else had insight.

Yes, I think he could. I heard Chip Kelly on the radio and he was talking about assigning redshirting freshmen to 4 games.

To expand, I believe he is eligible to play 4 games, but KF said he's focusing solely on academics this year.

Interesting. Seems crazy that you would not play the guy IF he was eligible. I can certainly think of 4 games I'd like to seem him in. Also a way to keep a guy like him invested in the program. You never know what is going to happen with these JUCO guys.

Not crazy at all. He’s there to get an education. If he’s had academic issues in the past he needs to concentrate on the books this year. 4 games won’t help his football career or the team. We are stacked on the Dline. Hopefully he takes care of the books and graduates on time.

Yeah, the whole point is to try to keep him eligible for his entire career as a Hawk. If football were also centrally on his plate - it would make it that much harder for him to acquire good habits and get acclimated to using all the academic resources that are available to the athletes. If he learns how to use the resources available to him and learns how to balance his books - it will be that much easier for him to remain in good academic standing through the remainder of his career.

Furthermore, I love the emphasis it places on helping these student athletes to focus on bettering themselves as people ... not just football players. I think it goes to show you how our program values its players as people - and I think that is the right thing to do.

How bout just two games. Game 1 while Reiff is suspended and the bowl game when school is on break? :)
I don't think this is even an option. I think the new rule does not apply because of his academic issues. Better he takes this season to get himself lined up academically, after he had to go JUCO in the first place. Quite honestly if he doesn't use all the resources available to him, and set himself up academically, we might as well not even go down that road, because he probably won't stay eligible anyway. Our coach is looking out for Daivon's best interest, and will not use him just to get by a game or two.

I'd be surprised if thinks this way. 99% of the football players are at Iowa to....play football.

The guy is a flight risk until he plays in a game.

Why would he leave? He would only have 2 years at another FBS school. Yes all are there for football but to also get an education. What maybe 5-10% spend any time in the NFL on the active roster? They all should get an education.

5.8% of college players get to the NFL.

.09% or .08% of high school football players will be drafted by the NFL.

As much as I’d like to see him play balancing his studying is best for him so that he stays on the field when his time comes.. Does he get to participate in all other team activities? Weights, conditioning, film, parctice, eating(was always one of my fav team actives short of the actual game lol) I’d feel like a caged BEAST if i were him!

True, and he will benefit from a redshirt year physically as well. He needs another year of development before he is ready to step in and play a lot.

I'd go back to hawkeyesports and look at the photos of him from camp and the ladies weekend. The dude is physically where he needs to be.

Do you understand the point of an academic redshirt?

Exactly. Highly unlikely he would leave at this point, unless it's to go down a level to FCS and be immediately eligible.

I don't know the details of how the new eligibility rules apply to JUCO players, but KF has seemed pretty consistent that they want Nixon focused on getting off to a good start with everything that goes with being a FB player and then add on the active participation. I would imagine KF would be asked on media day about it. He may answer differently now that the rule is known.

There may also be an issue concerning the ability of the football program to get a guy admitted to the university (dictated by university policy) versus the ability to get the guy eligible to play (dictated by NCAA policy).

Thus, while the coaches may have managed to get the guy admitted to the program - it doesn't imply that he's immediately available to play. Hence, the need for an academic redshirt.

maybe this has been posed already but is DN even practicing? Workouts? Training table?

He's has spring and summer semesters at U of I so it is a little odd to think he hasn't had time to build in proper study habits but who knows.

I would disagree. As that BTN commercial has pointed out for years, MOST major college athletes will go pro in a field other than their sport, fields such as business, education, medicine, engineering, music, technology, and so on.

It's easy to make general statements like that 99 percent one, but especially at Iowa, while kids are absolutely there to play football, they're also there to earn a diploma. They know the NFL will only be calling a few of them.

Frankly, in my experience at a D-1 school, I saw a large percentage of NONathletes who were on campus for a variety of reasons that had little to do with going to class and getting an education, so let's not throw out numbers that have little to do with reality.

Not to be a jerk, but we are discussing this topic again because of the pictures of him throwing his size and strength around against our OL in his Hawk gear, so obviously he is practicing. I'm sure like any redshirt he's able to make full use of all the facilities, training table etc... We've had guys who redshirted, and never played a game, who were on the depth chart and even traveled on some road trips. At this point, I'd doubt that he'll travel, but we'll have to see. Our first road trip isn't until Oct. I think, so we'll see on that.

He hasn't had an Iowa semester during football season, which is an entirely different ballgame of juggling responsibilities.

Additionally, you want him to build up a number of semesters with a good GPA ... that way he can afford to have a lighter load during the football season. During the football season, for guys who are expected to be top contributors, the combination of football and school and potentially be like managing 2 full-time jobs. A way of circumventing that is having the summer period provide the players with a bit more of a "buffer" in terms of building up more credit hours.

Put it this way... if he’s that damn good the coaches will get him some reps this year .. if he needs to learn the system better and the playbook he’s not going to see the field ... simple as that.. 3 things, one I didn’t include but tons of others have stated HIT THE BOOKS AND GET YOUR GRADES UP TO PAR! He has a world of wealth behind, in front of and the side of him to take advantage of the tootering that’s available for him. If I were him I would just hit the books hard and get his grades up and then worry about football.. and I think he will do just that

This has got to be a "wantofbees".

I have a feeling if Nixon does make it on the field it won't be for very long. It was grades coming out of High School, its grades now. Would be a remarkable turnaround if he could handle school and football to be eligible.

What was the backup QB in The Program majoring in? Wasn't it Swimming Pool Management? Doesn't Iowa offer than? Hell of a need for it!

And thus no football games in 2018. He is studying for 2019.

Yea...I'm talking about his Iowa career. Its taking some pretty hefty training wheels to get him moving right now academically. Will it be enough come next year or the year after. Sounds like he ought to look up to Stanley and never go downtown. Academics and ball only for Nixon. Could pay off in the long run. Hope so.
