Can Garza carry this team?

Seems like Fran is more strategic with playing Garza. I think he learned if Garza gets into foul trouble we are in big trouble.

Garza kept us within striking distance at Indiana, bad play elsewhere was too much to over come.

I really think the kid can keep us in every game if he stays out of foul trouble and his supporting cast can limit mistakes offensively and defensively.

Offensively, yes.

Offense isn't really the concern, though.

He is. Without him we don’t have an inside game which means the outside game would be very limited. Garza consistently scores 20+ points a game. Everyone else just has a good game randomly. Until someone else is more consistent, Garza will have to carry the team.

I think the point is, carry the team to what. Its no fluke that we have lost most of Luka's 30+ point games, (and no fault to him). We MUST have other guys pick up their contribution, (pointing at you BE, and JT), or we are going to keep losing these games by double didgets.....

Exactly.

His offensive production is excellent, and fun to watch.

But even if he scores 40 a game, there has to be some other scoring.

But beyond that is the fall off in D that's occurred. At one point their D efficiency climbed into the upper 70s. Not great but good enough. Now they're back in the 110s.

As good as we know he can be on offense, what he can do alone is not enough.

We are getting zero scoring production from our bench. No shooters. It's pretty easy to beat a team with only two scorers. Our bench tries, they just don't have the talent. We'll be waaaaay better next year, although I'm not sure we will ever see PMac again, and that is a real shame.

With or without anyone else picking up the slack on offense, the issue is defense and having enough to keep up the intensity on D. Period.

We scored more points in the loss to Maryland, with CJ, than the win against Maryland, without CJ.

I love how the current narrative seems to be that you ALLOW Garza to get his points and shut down everyone else. I would bet the Luka would rightfully claim that no one is allowing him to score. Every trip down court is a battle and I doubt that anyone in the B1G takes more physical abuse than Luka, much of which is never called.

He had 44 against a Michigan and we lost. No, he cannot carry the team. It’s a team game and you need 5 players contributing.
And without him we'd be lucky to be .500. Hes been carrying the team all season

Nope. Need JW and CJ in the lineup to keep things honest. With no CJ we are a 2 dimensional team and it’s easier to cover us up. Joe can’t be the #2 guy without help.

After today's game against the Gophers,
the Hawkeyes have 3 guys scoring in
double figures for the entire season:

-Garza.......23.7 point average in 26 games
Wieskamp.14.9 point average in 26 games
Fredrick.....10.7 point average in 22 games.

Just about a 50 point average from our 3
top scorers. We need all three of them to
get to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tourney.

Hawks can lean on Garza to win these low scoring grinders. They can't get into a shootout without being able to knock down 3s.

May be a good idea to slow things down, it's a fine line though as it makes everyone work and easier for Garza to pick up the dumb fouls. Just like today.

Garza has been pretty consistent this year. The toughness in the way he plays and approaches his game has won games for us for sure. You always know what you're getting from him. When the others start hitting shots consistently, he'll get his and then we'll win, win, win. Thank you, Luka!
