Can HROT (or HORT - your call) agree

Now you have gone and done it. You proposed a reasonable suggestion, supported by…checks notes…89% of Americans.

And yet we cannot get some bipartisan basics past the NRA wing of Congress. Not to mention we will likely be inundated with “if only there had been more than one good guy with a gun” posts.

Being put on the "nut list" can easily be abused by the system. It's a dangerous road to go down.

Definitely could have been on a red flag list. I don’t think citizens should be allowed to purchase assault rifles, let alone an 18 year old.
This should have been blatantly obvious after the Vegas shooting. You can easily modify them to full auto with bump stocks. No need for assault rifles.

Should auto drivers be allowed to drive until a red flag goes up? No real need to license electricians or nuke plant operators either, right?
Gun purchases are so obviously off the chart by now, anyone who fails to acknowledge that seems to have an agenda that is not in the public interest.

Wut?

And this is precisely why these idiots are allowed to run wild. Christ we don't even lock nuts up any more because it's not a crime to be nuts!! It's easier to blame the guns because guns have none of those beloved "human rights" liberals love to chirp about.

His hometown is right on the N.Y./Penn border. Unfortunately, even if a mental evaluation meant he had been put on a state watch list it may not have crossed the state line - and being so strongly pro hunter as they are in Pennsylvania, he may have been easily able to buy firearms there if 18 was the legal age to buy.
What a cluster.

That *this* man should not not have been able to buy guns?

This was left up to the State of New York to determine, They decided it was OK. Obviously New York felt the rifle was safe for their citizens, they have several restrictions to keep their people safe.

Who would have thought that a legally purchased rifle in a restrictive state could have killed so many. It's almost like the restrictions only protect the armed, not the unarmed.

Who would believe that a lack of guns would lead to less gun deaths? Strange, right?
The kid threatened to shoot up his high school in the past. He has a history.

It's not that simple. You need a ID to purchase a firearm. Many gun transactions are restricted. Different States have different restrictions. It is illegal to purchase a gun to transport into a State where it is prohibited, clearly that wasn't the case here.

The State of New York knew that, they require that information to be included in their background check. It was their call. They cleared him.

I’ve never bought or owned a gun so I
Don’t know these things - it was just a guess on my part. Thanks for the clarification.

Not a problem. Buying firearms is quite a bit more restricted than some would like to admit. It does require though that everyone involved is following the law. Clearly if you are planning on murdering as many Black people as you possibly can, you are already willing to break a couple of laws though.

The rifle was legally purchased in the State of New York, so he passed a background check and the rifle was not an "assault rifle". It was just exactly like an "assault rifle" only striped of a few cosmetic features. It did have an illegal magazine per New York regulations. There are literally millions of magazine in the US that are banned in New York and other restrictive States, although some of these bans have been ruled unconstitutional. That would require a New York resident to cross the State line to pick up one, or a dozen for that matter, the are cheap.
