Can someone explain what a "preferred" walk-on is?

What does a preferred walk-on get that another walk-on doesn't? I see this term a lot but have no idea what it means. Could someone help?

Thanks!

The "preferred" part just means they are invited to camp in August. Teams can only bring 105 players to camp (currently a proposal to change it to 110 though), so it's typically the 85 on scholarship plus 20 walk-ons. The rest of the walk-ons have to wait until school starts in late August to join the team for practices.

That's the only difference.

Has Iowa had a walk-on (not PWO) in recent history play or earn a scholarship? Rarely do we hear about them.

Maybe not for football, but for other sports a preferred walk on is the same as a scholarship athlete with the exception of getting money. They get training table, tutors, preferred scheduling, etc. In sports like baseball where scholarships are limited, preferred walk on's often play a very important role in the success of the team.

Yeah, I'm only talking football. All walk-ons are recruited walk-ons and all get training table, etc. these days. The preferred part just refers to a camp invite.

Easley came in at semester last year and quickly made the two deeps. He was in camp in August obviously, but a little different situation since he was a mid-year enrollee.
