DanL, I think your post is thoughtful. I intended those same thoughts when I posted on another thread a few days ago that I think we can win conference without any of the new guys playing. Obviously, that is a bit of a stretch, as there can always be injuries and other setbacks, but I honestly think this is a killer lineup:
5: Woody, Uhl
4: Uthoff, Baer
3: Jok, Uhl, Baer
2: Clemmons, Ellingson
1: Gesell, Clemmons
With this lineup, for most of the game we will have 22-24 year old men playing, and much of their competition will be 18-20 year old boys. Every year we see a mid-major that happens to be senior heavy make a run in the tourney...and these guys aren't mid-major.
That leaves:
5: Wagner, Jones
4: Jones, Hutton
3: Fleming, Hutton
2: Moss, Fleming
1: Williams, Fleming
I doubt that team can with the conference...this year...but maybe some day. It seems that Fran was able to pull off a recruiting coup that you don't see much anymore: Convince 18 year olds that it is worth their time to WAIT 1 year to feel the love.
There was one consistent theme throughout all of those video interviews...they all talk about TEAM. I wonder if that isn't maybe the most important thing that the coaches are looking for. Maybe that is why we have seen a few of these high profile recruits fall off the radar at the last hour. Maybe the coaches are getting a sense that they really aren't about the team. Maybe that is why Cook pulled the trigger: he has the skillset needed to be top shelf, but the character & maturity desired to insert that into a team structure.
Anyway, good post DanL. I hope we are all right. I hope our upperclassmen can be as good as history tells us they should...and let's hope these young guys are as good as advertised. It could be a fun few month/years for Hawkeye fans.
Go Hawks!
