Capt. Janeway is from Iowa. I didn't know that.

Nice story on NPR this morning about Kate Mulgrew. I am linking an abridged version. In the full audio version she mentions being from Dubuque. Her Wiki bio says she attended Wahlert, but left at age 17 to go to an acting academy. It also mentions she is pro-life and anti-death penalty. Which, is important if you read the linked story and think about her decision many years ago to carry an unplanned pregnancy to term and give up the child. She was given ether at the very end of the delivery so that she would not see or be able to hold the child. It was thought that would be less stressful on her and easier to give up the child.
She has reconciled with the now young woman and has a strong relationship with her.

Yep. I watched the whole Voyager series. She got the part only after the first Janeway, Genevive Bujold (sp?) sucked terribly during the early filming the producers got rid of her and called back their second choice, Mulgrew. Kate was not an unattractive woman back in the day.

Genevieve Bujold was originally cast as Janeway. She filmed a pilot episode. She walked away from the series because of the time demands. I have no idea why she didn't know it would be so demanding before she cast for the part. She was a fairly accomplished actress with a lengthy career.
Mulgrew took the role, and in her new biography mentions how she tried to raise her two sons, even though she'd leave the house before dawn, and return well after dark. At the time she took the Janeway role she was struggling financially and was thinking about selling her house because of trouble making payments.

Bujold

My least favorite Star Trek but still good. Her flat Iowa nasal delivery made her less appealing than she could have been but if you could get past the voice, she was decent.

Not necessarily going to trust wiki. I remember hearing it was because the producers were not happy with her performance - basically neither side was unhappy about her departure. I watched some of the scenes she filmed, and I am glad Mulgrew took over.

Kirk and Janeway, Iowa has a bright future in our socialist intergalactic civilization.

Could be both. They cast Bujold for a reason. She was pretty well known at the time. The clips of the pilot that she filmed looked stiff. Hard to understand either reason. Her bailing, or the studio throwing her out after the pilot.

Better known than Mulgrew for sure. I only knew Mulgrew from one episode of Dallas, and as a politician who was using Sam Malone on Cheers.

ST Voyager was when Star Trek on TV started to decline a bit. TNG was amazing and DS9 was very good, but sometimes even better than TNG.

What hurt Voyager, I believe, was being on the UPN network. I think that hurt Enterprise as well.. You can tell that the network executives did not truly get Star Trek. I believe Star Trek was better off syndicated.

Mulgrew is a very good actress and I did enjoy the Capt. Janeway character.

I remember that UPN crap. I moved from Iowa City to Davenport, and for a couple of seasons we had to have a friend video tape Voyager. I watched it from beginning to end.

I wasn't really interested in watching DS9, but am now almost done with season 2. Waiting on the Dominion stuff to get going, which I have heard is when the show starts getting really good.

Stick with it, it does get better. But it remains the most ugly of the Trek series. There must not be any gays in the future.

Huh? DS9 has one of the hottest girl/girl kisses on network TV. Probably the only reason it got on the air was because it was on an oddball network at irregular times. Dax and some former lover went after it, of course it was spicier because Dax had been a man when he'd first encountered the woman.
As to DS9 itself I recently completed watching the series from start to finish. I was much more impressed with it this time around. It wandered a little with the Dominion War. I thought throwing the Cardassians in was completely superfluous. Season 7 really wandered. Teri Farrell's departure must have really thrown the producers for a loop. Bringing in Ezri Dax seemed forced, and the story lines around her were weak. She did look delicious as the cocktail waitress in the casino episode.
DS9 did have some of the greatest episodes of the entire franchise, most notably Little Green men and Trials and Tribulations.

Im talking about the set and costumes. It's one ugly feast for the eyes.
