A Casey's convenience store on the south side of Iowa City has "paused" its practice of having an armed security guard on-site after some neighbors and community activists questioned the message that sent.

Casey's Communications Director Katie Petru told the Press-Citizen in an email Thursday that the company "paused the service at this store, and are evaluating the need and future plan for when/how security support is needed."

Casey's did not provide a reason for the change or details for how it would make future decisions.

Casey's, based in Ankeny, has security in only a couple dozen of its more than 2,200 stores across 16 states.

Over the past month, Iowa City South District residents have been questioning why Casey's felt the need to have a security guard in a neighborhood with a higher Black population compared to other locations where there are reportedly no guards.

It was an issue raised at meetings of the Iowa Freedom Riders, an opinion piece published in The Cedar Rapids Gazette, and numerous social media posts from activists and residents.

Catherine Hitchcock, a resident of the South District, told the Press-Citizen she feels the decision to have the armed guard at the Casey's near her home was discriminatory.

There are three Casey's locations in Iowa City. In addition to the Casey's on Broadway Street in the South District, another is located on North Dubuque Street near downtown and a third on Willow Creek Court in southeast Iowa City. A Casey's spokesperson did not say whether Iowa City's other two locations have armed security.

I worked at Gasbys on S Gilbert in college. Sometimes they would schedule me at the store on 1st Ave. I wore the panic button on my waist at 1st ave store and not the other. I watched more shoplifting at 1st ave. More driveoffs. More people saying “I gave you a twenty” when we both knew it was a 10. Maybe all that will change with the menthol ban.

There was an attempted murder w/ shots fired just a few blocks from this location earlier this week..........Good time to remove an armed guard.........

This doesn’t move the needle for me in regards to outrage.

it should be easy for caseys to put out data regarding distrubances, compare it to each one where they have armed gaurds at and compared to locations they dont have armed gaurds at.

it may not make some people happy, but it would show if the decision was backed by data

When I drove by the area today, I saw that the bus stop less than a block away had holes broken into the glass on every side of it.
I've stopped at that Casey's on a Friday night before. I'd suggest that those complaining stop by late some evening.

A Casey's spokesperson said when a store has "elevated levels of disruptive activity that impacts guests and team members, our safety guidelines call for on-site security support."

Maybe Casey’s should just close that store down then.

poor’s need breakfast pizza too

I saw that the other day. Just assumed that somebody had the new nacho cheese gordita from Taco Bell next door, ate it in there, and the colon blow hit faster than expected.

It's a high volume location, it just happens to be in a shitty neighborhood. Instead of renting out that small office in the Pepperwood Plaza for years, the ICPD should just let a cop set up a small office at a table in that Caseys. They are in there enough as it is.

If Iowa Freedom Riders are involved, you know it's a disaster. What a disaster you must be to consider throwing your name around with that type of people.

So glad I attended Iowa when I did vs now.

The part you're remembering fondly hasn't changed. Been back 20 years and while the surrounding areas have had their problems (areas which frankly I didn't even know existed in Iowa City as student), the core campus still has the same vibe. Patio season and warm weather have arrived again...and I can confirm even covid hasn't stopped the amazingness that is Downtown I.C.

South side of Iowa City has always had more crime... Just a fact.

I thought ICPD stated they had actually had more calls from the location in downtown vs that spot and yet no guard there. I thought that was the issue is where college kids are causing more issues no guard but where less issues in neighborhood largely minority there was a guard.

Cool.

But when I was back about five years ago there were homeless walking about and sleeping in doorways downtown. Not faulting them and I realize homelessness is more common everywhere. But still.

And I thought I read, on here perhaps, that "gangs" of troublemakers would make forays into downtown I.C. Not the drunken, noisy type but the "We gonna jack someone up" type.

Nevertheless, I hope the same vibe exists and you are in a better position to say.

I’m downtown often and in warmer months there’s some homeless in pedmall hanging out but have never seen them cause trouble nor seen them trying to sleep in business doorways. And never seen “gang” stuff at all. The worst you’ll run into downtown is a drunken idiot college guy who thinks he’s invincible and looking for a fight. Even those aren’t happening that often and when it does happen police deal with it quick.

Don't have a security guard and get your ass sued off if a criminal injures a customer or a worker in your store.

vs.

Have a security guard and get accused of being racists.

Welcome to America in 2020.

Gotta love the outrage... Has nothing to do with race. 100% about safety. Higher crime area.... and Casey's has every right to have a security guard. If having a guard bothers you, then don't go.

They not only have a right, they have a legal DUTY to create a safe environment for customers and staff.

LOL...I too saw the affected bus stop, but did not fully consider the possibilities that you suggested. I like the way you think though. :)
