CBS Sunday Morning: The Broadband Divide (it's not just what you probably think)

In Iowa only 81.3% of people have access to broadband.

Only 18.5% have access to a wired low-price plan.

There are counties where less than half the ppl have access.

it doesn’t get talked about enough, but this is one of the reasons online schooling is very difficult in a lot of places

Local companies like Omnitel Have done a great job with the FCC grants but it’s the terribly run larger organizations like Windstream that have failed the rural areas. They’ve pocketed the grant funds and kept infrastructure improvements to a minimum even though rural residents are paying more for less all across the country. As with many gov’t funding programs, there’s no real accountability

The Karst region of rural NE Iowa is particularly underserved but there are a couple small broadband providers in rural
SE MN that have provided fiber optic to the home type infrastructure to a limited number of people across the border.

Americans, as a whole, pay way more, for slower access speeds, than damn near anywhere else around the world. Because the telecoms have divided the country up and limited competition. They spend millions lobbying Congress to prevent any oversight or open competition, and probably reap billions in extra $$ doing so.
