Cedar Rapids police encountered a walking meth lab Monday night.
Public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said officers responded to the area of Ninth Avenue and Eighth Street at 11:50 p.m. for a report of a suspicious subject. Buelow said police located 46-year-old Genio Ruiz and a woman walking in the area and stopped to speak with them. When officers spoke with Ruiz, they detected a “chemical odor” on him, Buelow said.
Police searched Ruiz and found 16.5 grams of marijuana on him. As he was being handcuffed and placed under arrest, police found a 20 ounce pop bottle tucked in the waistband of Ruiz’ pants and obscured by his sweatshirt. Buelow said there was a “cloudy substance” in the pop bottle containing lithium battery strips. The container is what is known in law enforcement as a “one pot” style meth lab.
Ruiz was taken into custody and faces charges of manufacturing a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of meth precursors.
