Change conferences

Its liberals running academia...not to mention the House of Representatives. And its academia that ultimately gets to make these decisions...so yes, its these folks who are at fault.

As for the rest, we are following the rules.

A pandemic runs its course and does not simply "disappear", though it will burn out for the most part at some point. And finally, given we're in a pandemic and the safest thing for these kids IS to play and be in the football program...your argument has no merit. And finally, your "shut up and follow the rules" is a fitting expression that sums up liberalism and its approach to dissent and free speech quite well.

All that said. This shouldn't be about politics. The kids are safer in an active season and in a pro-active program of monitoring...both of which they had in place.
All very well said. Unfortunately it is all political. And the conferences who are in more republican controlled states will play football, like Texas, and the SEC, and ACC and then liberal controlled states won't. It shouldn't be political, it should be common sense.

All those interactions and events happen with or without football. The difference is that WITH a football season these kids are more closely monitored, tested more frequently, coached on behaviors more thoroughly and treated more quickly. Having the season improves how the virus is addressed and reduces risk...as long as no one puts fans in the stadiums.

All those interactions are greatly reduced without FB. You're not staffing and cleaning and doing everything else you do when in season preparing. Who cleans, who cooks, handles equip, videos, etc.. All those will not be happening now. Less interaction.

And what about the 2nd point. What do you do WHEN a positive case surfaces, either in team or staff? Who's quarantined? Staff?? Your unit?? Just the player or coach?? Who contact traces? Can you see the great difficulties involved and odds of completing a season are?

The players are not in a vacuum.. There are coaches, staff, university staff, and friends and family of all the above. If a 20 something kid gets it, yes they may recover ok.. they have a good shot at it. The problem is they are carriers. To the staff, to the maint workers, custodians, food service, faculty, etc.. They are NOT 20 something. You can spread AND test negative. Now who's liable? Are all THOSE people tested everyday? Will they spread it further. C'mon people, we've seen it before, whar happens when you have large groups.

I really want them to play too, I am sad they're not. But I predict if/when the other conferences try it will shut down just as quick. How will it work if just one positive test means quarantine of everyone who's been in contact? Wait 2 weeks then you can play?
All of what you have said is true whether or not a kid is playing football or not. If we are truly concerned, then everything should be shut down. No going to Walmart, no protests, no flying, no eating out. My point is that they test so frequently that it can be caught and contained much faster in a college football environment.

Plans are in place already for positives...tracing, isolation, and if too many are effected the Big 12 has 3 "reschedule" bye weeks in place if a game can't be played on a scheduled week. There is no evidence at all that rates will be any different with or without football being played...and as for cleaning staff and cooks...they work through the year in support of the team and will work whether games are played or not. The training table and facilities do not just shut down in the off season. But yes, there ARE difficulties...its just that, with school in session, they are not greater if you play than they are if you do not play.

No, he's screaming because hysteria...anti-science...and politics...have canceled a football season.

Well, no....science and common sense shut it down. Politics? (at the top) would have forced football to be played. Hysteria?....nearly all the tantrums have been thrown by those who did not get their way to play at all costs.

You're wrong on 3 out of 3.

The decision is made by university presidents. They do what’s best for the university, not just the athletes. Even if the students are safer... it opens up a ton of risk to the university.

Interesting, there's a republican running this country, there are republicans running states. There are republicans running schools. And yet the football season is on hold. Not really the liberals fault. I said this over and over, if there's enough people that feel the way you do then why aren't we back to normal. It's because you're the minority. So rather being a karen and screaming, do what's necessary to get rid of the virus so we can get back to normal. If you shut up and follow the rules then maybe we'll have spring football.
there will be no spring football.

Psychologists would call this projection.

My issue with this argument of

Sweden has one of the worst records on Covid 19 in the world with 566 deaths per million making it 6th worst among industrialized nations. It is far worse off than its neighbors Denmark and Finland at 107 and 60 respectively. Hardly a model to follow.

You only feel they're safer because you want football. I too want football but I'm not will to risk everything just for one season. The University doesn't need a bunch of lawsuits from players or anyone else. When there's risk, things have to change. It's not your money so you don't care. I do care what happens. Again, shut up and follow the rules.

Covid will be around for years. Sports may be at an end.
Yes, definitely, sports may cease forever. Football, basketball, wrestling, tennis, golf, all sports. The modern Olympic Games had a good run while it lasted. We'll have memories but our grandchildren will have to read about them in history books or watch archived youtube videos to understand what life was like prior to the emergence of Covid-19. I'm serious.

JFC, I understand people are disappointed and angry but do we need the absurd drama?

Had people like OP just masked up and washed their grubby hands, instead going to restaurants and bars with all the other mouth breathers, COVID would be almost gone and there would be football.
BS. this isn't about a virus with a 99% survival rate. its about election year and destroying the economy. socialists want to transform America. look around, its working. the fear mongering has been exploited to great effect.

What bothers me about this discussion is all everyone talks about is deaths. The rate of prolonged illness among affected individuals is much higher than the death rate and because it is new, there is still much unknown about the long term effects on the heart, the brain, the lungs and other organs on even younger people.

All this aside, I believe that it was the experience of the Indiana player that tipped the scales over the past week or so. You can have a legitimate argument over whether playing college sports increases the risk of contracting the virus amongst this group, but to suggest that it doesn't pose a real risk for those that do cannot be assumed at this point.

not one season this will affect many seasons. they won't play in spring either. conferences that play this season will pull away from those who don't in revenue and recruiting as well as performance. this is insanity.

The only safety that was thought of was making sure the schools are safe from the liability of future complications.
Basically what it really boils down to is that this exposes how flawed our legal system is.........;)

If they're so afraid of lawsuits even with the possibility of player waivers, then that's because the legal system has come to cater to those looking for easy money, who in turn feed the legal system with easy money.

So basically, thanks to that little walk, what we've done here is expose the real issue with the downfall of college athletics (and society in general)......................................

"Is it money, Evil Monkey?"

then I guess it is a good thing that there are zero elected officials in any meaningful capacity who are members of the Socialist party, then, huh?

I don’t know, there’s 232 in the House of Representatives and another 47 in the Senate. To be fair, a few of those just lean that direction. Remember, a rose by any other name...

So it's safe for college kids to be on campus, go to parties, fly on airplanes, go out to eat, and protest. But college kids who would be isolated, tested constantly, and have doctors treat them at the first sign of anything aren't safe??? That's some dumb ass logic right there. "It's not safe to play football" is a total bs and political play. I'm sick of it.

Exactly, libs can't comprehend this for some reason. It's ALL political. They will do anything they have to to beat trump, they've provided it many times

Clearly the Big Ten isn't operating in Iowa's best interest. The conference certainly hasn't in men's basketball for years. Let's change conferences. Who knows; maybe a real conference that plays football will take us at the last moment. All of you COVID freak out people are you freaking happy now? All of your negativity and spreading of error and deception has now led to no Iowa football this fall. It just wasn't enough for you people to go about things your own way. No, you have to ruin things for everybody else as well. Thanks.

That's a brilliant, well-researched, well-documented opinion. If you aren't already, you should take those highly developed skills and run for office. Probably for president.

You have the kind of incisive mind that is making this country great again. Great at being the worst in the world in its response to COVID-19 in particular.

Is it "negative" when the law says it's a good idea to wear a seat belt?
Is it "negative" when the doctor tells you it's a good idea to stop smoking?
Is it "negative" when a store posts a sign that says, "No shirt, no shoes, no service?"

Generally, intelligent people would agree that statements of fact are, in and of themselves, neither positive nor negative. They are simply facts. How you interpret them, how you spin them, is what adds the judgment factor.

Those who wanted to swill beer and watch kids play football this fall may, indeed, consider postponing the season a negative thing.

But those who love football but believe it's unethical to ask kids to play football during a pandemic may find postponing the season the wise thing to do.

Personally, I commend the Big Ten commissioner and university presidents who did the right thing. COVID-19 is here. It is a fact. No one knows what long-term health issues may result from it, even for healthy young athletes who contract it.

The virus cannot be contained by a football program. It has not been contained by Major League Baseball teams who are operating in bubble-like conditions that would be impossible for college football to replicate.

When people get sick, doctors often prescribe bad-tasting medicine or injections that hurt, but most people suffer the temporary pain for long-term gain. The Big Ten is taking its medicine. The babies in the public are whining about it. The adults accept it. Which one are you?

Just what we need on this board, another nut job trump supporter who thinks the world is against them.
