Chase Utley better bring LA cops to New York

Sucks that Tejada was injured, but that's a perfectly legal slide in the rules of baseball. If you don't like it you can go watch soccer

I can see them changing the rules next year but today this is the correct response.

I didn't say it was an illegal play according to the rules. I said it was not a play that should be made in the course of a game.
Baseball players are pussies compared to hockey players.
The hockey players union and the NHL know how to deal with situations like this correctly.

Was it legal? My understanding is the player must have started a slide before they reach 2nd base and calling that a slide is open to debate. Saying he started whatever it was before getting to 2nd base is open to debate, also.

So, it's not illegal but they shouldn't do it?

It's not legal according to official MLB rules, but my point would be that it should be, assuming intent can be reasonably shown. When you hit the ground on your slide after you pass the base you are "sliding" into, it could be reasonably assumed you are trying to interfere with the pivot man.

It's illegal for a runner to interfere with a fielder who is in the baseline, why shouldn't it also be illegal for a runner to interfere with a player trying to catch and throw from outside of the baseline?

There's not really a rule covering it. Most of the interference rules cover interfering with someone fielding a "batted" ball, not catching a throw. The only rules covering throws have to do with trying to hit the ball itself after it's throw, or a non-runner interfering with a throw (like a base coach trying to deflect a throw out of play).

That was not a baseball play. You do not start your "slide at the bag that way, the pay back should be swift and severe. MLB should fine and suspend Utley but the league is too corrupt to do it.
It was certainly a very hard play but it was not in any way an illegal slide. Even the announcers said that.

As a Dodger fan, I agree it was an overly hard slide and unfortunately cost the Mets. I'm all for changing the rule, but if they change it they better change the " in the vicinity" tags at second base too.

He didn't start to slide until he was already next to the bag. Whether it was illegal or not doesn't change the fact that it was a dirty play.

After Reggie Jackson threw his hip into the path of a throw against the Dodgers in a World Series, I really don't care what the Dodgers do to any New York player...Yankee OR Met.

Take out slides happen in every situation like that. The difference is any decent ss knows it's coming and doesn't turn his back to the runner.

The slide might actually help the Mets as Tejada is playing below replacement level.
