One of these groups is not like the others. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke

The 2016 inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have been named, and the roster skews heavily toward classic rock, with Cheap Trick, Deep Purple, Chicago and Steve Miller among the acts chosen by the nominating committee.

The rap group N.W.A, possibly getting a boost from the biopic Straight Outta Compton, will also be inducted into the Rock Hall at a ceremony to be held April 8 in New York.

The lack of diversity in both genre and gender was noted. As The New York Times reports:

"The music world has been closely watching the results of the secretive Rock Hall process, after the organization this year dismissed a large contingent of its influential nominating committee and, according to reports, made an effort to expand its membership with younger voters and more women. But that process has yet to yield any radical changes."

Newer acts like The Smiths and Nine Inch Nails were overlooked. The prog rock band Yes got a no. Chic, nominated for a record 10 times, has now been overlooked 10 times. Chaka Khan and The Cars will also have to wait for a later date, if ever, to reach the hall of fame.

The exclusion of Janet Jackson, nominated for the first time since she became eligible in 2007 and a favorite to make the class of 2016, raised the ire of Troy L. Smith at cleveland.com:

"Her failure to earn induction highlights older rock voters claims' that Miss Jackson isn't rock, isn't Madonna and isn't as good as her brother. I couldn't disagree more.

"Janet Jackson has released No.1 albums in four decades, helped break racial barriers on MTV and has 10 chart-topping singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. She would have given the 2016 inductions the headliner it needed."

But complaining about the Rock Hall's picks is a national pastime. For tips on how to do it properly, check out NPR's The Right Way To Complain About The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

I approve this message.

I get NWA if this is a "popular" music HOF. They were pretty influential in the rap genre....but rap is not RnR. Not sure I get Cheap Trick, either.

Cheap Trick actually has some pretty impressive songs that weren't played on the radio.

Maybe Cheap Trick just isn't my bag....but I know a lot of bands that have some really impressive songs that never made it to radio, but that doesn't necessarily make them HOF-worthy.

What's your criteria?

Like with sports, I have to fall back on the subjective criteria of "greatness". In my mind, Cheap Trick is like the guy in MLB who is a starter for a variety teams over the course of 10-12 years, has some big seasons and makes some All-Star teams, but never sniffs the HOF. Say, someone like Scott Rolen. But, that's just like my opinion, man.

I know this won't be a popular opinion on here, but by my definition, N.W.A is more rock n roll then most of the bands in that hall. I don't care what type of music they make.

But that is the problem with that place. Everybody has a different idea of what should he recognized. I wouldnt put the Steve Miller Band in. I don't care how many records they sold.

I just looked through all the RRHF inductees and it's a solid list except for: Nat Cole, Joni Mitchell, and James Taylor. Overall, not bad.

cheap trick's first is a classic. Highly influential on the alt/indie stuff to come. Pollard loved it, I think Corrigan may have too.

James Brown was in the first group inducted. It's never been the "R&R Hall of Fame".

To that end, the majority of the first inductees were American blues musicians. The powers that be, Rolling Stones editors, decided then that everything would evolve from there. I have always thought that the R&RHOF was for influential, pioneering, innovative, and (lastly) successful artists with the emphasis on influential. I totally support NWA getting in, they had huge influence on hip-hop and also symbolized the culture at that time. Like it or not, they were a strong voice that a lot of young people heard and related to.

Their influence transcended the hip hop genre.

Agree 100%.

Sadly, maybe so, but it had nothing to do with Rock and Roll.
We'll I don't consider The Temptations, Steve Wonder, Bob Marley, Bee-Gees, or James Taylor rock music either, but I understand they were influential to music as a whole. To be honest, I wouldn't classify 90 percent of the artists in there, including new nominees The Steve Miller Band and Chicago, as "rock" (as defined by my tastes) My parents have a different idea. Maybe they should just change the name to the recorded music Hall of fame. Lol.

There is only one NWA!!!! WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

If Zevon makes it in, for his induction tribute they need Jesse Ventura to sing "Werewolves of London".

Their duet from Gov Ventura's inauguration ball was classic !!
