Chicago tops list of best U.S. cities for visitors for eighth consecutive year

ByPawan Naidu

Chicago has been named the best “Big City in the U.S.” for the eighth consecutive year by a luxury travel magazine.

The city was voted the No. 1 city by readers of Condé Nast Traveler for its annual Readers' Choice Awards. More than 500,000 readers selected Chicago as their top U.S. city, slightly down from last year's over 520,000 voters.

"Chicago's historic eighth consecutive win of this award reflects the rich diversity of culture, culinary innovation and experiences our city offers," Gov. JB Pritzker said in a statement. "The rest of the world is catching on to the fact that there's truly no more dynamic destination in America than right here.”

During the summer season, Chicago welcomed over 671,000 international visitors, an 11% increase compared with 2023. Notably, summer visits from Canadians saw a 21% increase. Turnout for marquee events like the Democratic National Convention, Lollapalooza, and the return of the NASCAR Chicago Street Race contributed to the city surpassing last year’s hotel booking totals, Choose Chicago said.

"Chicagoans know that our city is second to none," Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement. “And now we have yet another incredible accolade to prove it. This honor is a testament to the strength, warmth and resilience of Chicagoans and the beauty and vibrancy of our neighborhoods."

Condé Nast Traveler has been ranking U.S. cities for 37 years, making it the longest-running recognition of excellence in the travel industry. Chicago has been named Best Big City in the U.S. every year since 2017, more than any other city in the history of the award.

Chicago crime and chaos is keeping tourists away, experts say

Such events as the chaos downtown that led to a deadly shooting right in the middle of Millennium Park have led people to cancel trips, meetings, and events in Chicago because they don't feel safe. CBS 2's Tara Molina reports.

What do you recommend to see there?
When I was there I toured two Frank Lloyd Wright homes (private home/studio, and Robie House). Went on a walking prohibition tour. A walking gangster tour. Saw a concert. Did the skydeck thing. Ate at some amazing restaurants and had drinks at a number of rooftop bars. Mostly all old-guy things.

You got to be 60 el bees to visit though. Don't put rocks in your pockets and lie about your weight just to visit. That can be very dangerous. Almost as dangerous as having five of these beautiful hand-rolled Macanudo Cigars.

Chicago violence: 100 shot, 18 fatally, in weekend shootings across city, CPD says

Stay out of Chicago during the July 4th holiday.

The Gold Coast was a war zone over the 4th. Same with Lincoln Park and Lakeview.

You're too ****ing stupid to insult. FFS dude you live in Montezuma. That's methed up.

What cities do you like more?
the Midwest city I've been to as much as Chicago, that I like more, is Minneapolis. Madison too for a smaller city. Indy, and St Louis I like more. Detroit had an awesome ball park.

Out West I like Vegas and Denver. I love Vegas actually.

New York city was OK. Miami I didn't like. I'm not a world traveler by any means.

Chicago is undoubtedly a top city to visit. Aside from Vegas and NYC my favorite food city. Can’t beat wrigleyville anytime, st pats on the river is a great time as well. Tons of great shows, wonderful museums…..but avoid south side. It’s just shat

While in Italy for 2 weeks we met several people from other countries who, when we told them where we were from, remarked that they had visited Chicago and absolutely loved it. There was a couple from Scotland who visited last summer and wished they could spend every summer there. They also lamented the shit weather they had in Scotland this summer which made the city all the more appealing. I told them to a avoid the place in the winter. 🙃

If they loved Chicago they would fall in love with Cleveland.

Living in NW Indiana all of my life have given me access to one of the greatest cities in the world. I'm just minutes away from all of the sport teams, The Loop (downtown), the beaches, concerts, etc. The food scene is excellent. The culture is excellent. The night life scene is excellent. Whether you are driving southbound or northbound on DuSable-Lakeshore Drive is one of the most scenic drives you can experience. Lake Michigan Beaches on one side and the downtown skyscrapers on other.
