Christian Williams: Player of the Week

Good for him. He had his struggles at the B1G level, but I don't recall any issues with how he conducted himself while at Iowa. Any player that is a good teammate and comports himself well during his time at Iowa I'm happy to see have success wherever he lands.

In 2017 we had 3 players leave the program.

(1) 6'6" SG Peter Jok (graduated)

(2) 6'8" PF Dale Jones (graduated; due to injury, was granted a 6th year of eligibility but that additional year would not be at Iowa; in Apr 2017 Jones committed to the University of North Dakota)

(3) 6'6" combo guard Christian Williams (***; was originally scheduled to graduate in 2019; on Thurs Oct 26, 2017, Williams asked for and was granted a release from his scholarship; Williams finished out his academic requirements for the fall 2017 semester before transferring to Indiana State)

Given the way Williams abandoned the Hawks on the eve of the new season, I don't really care what he does at Indiana St. I will say that it probably worked out best for everyone involved.

I hate to be cold about it as well, but his 11th hour departure certainly didn't help the Hawks out that season.

Yeah, it wasn't the transfer that bothered me, it was the timing. I think he expected to be the starter, but saw the writing on the wall with Bohannon arriving on campus (that was his freshmen year, right?)

You’re right regarding the one year difference in classes, but I don’t think that it was Jordan who forced his transfer. Remember, that Williams started 2016-2017 (his sophomore year) as starter, before being replaced by Bohannon a few games into the year and didn’t look back. IIRC, it was actually Connor McCaffery who displaced Williams as backup PG prior to 2017-2018, prompting Williams to transfer. However, McCaffery ended up getting mono and having a tonsillectomy, keeping him out for the rest of the year after playing in like five games.

We could’ve really used Williams that year, and even benefitted from his perimeter defense last year as well, imo.

Thanks for the correction :)

That's correct. CW started the first six games his sophomore year (although even in four of those JB played more minutes). The crazy part is JB played 1005 minutes to CW's 435, yet only had a 29 to 26 lead in steals. CW was exceptional on defense, though he missed a few fast break layups after his steals. I remember even when we won in East Lansing in 2016, they got Gesell in foul trouble (after he'd put up 25 against them at Carver for a career high), and CW came in and kept things moving in the right direction in the first half. I thought then he'd end up contributing in the future, but didn't end up that way.
