He benched Mike Meyer 6 games this year for a DUI. He playes Safety. This was a position of need. Instead he burned red shirts off freshman. He could have benched him for one game like Meyer did. You guys can keep your image of what happens seven years ago if that makes you feel better but then let's take a look at your arrest record the last seven years too because it is quite impressive.I think Meyer handled it appropriately. Honestly, I think Meyer has handled all of the discipline issues appropriately this year. Would Dantonio have benched Barrett for a game after getting a DUI?
That's the point, Iowa players aren't given mulligan's. They break the rules, they pay for it and it doesn't matter who you are, end of story. Dantonio is a great coach but he is at the bottom of the barrel as far as class and what he'll do to win a football game. Faking injuries to playing undisciplined thugs, your coach is a low life.He benched Mike Meyer 6 games this year for a DUI. He playes Safety. This was a position of need. From 7 years ago. GO look up the punishment those kids received. Anything serious...they were off the team. Minor stuff like underage drinking got as much our more punishment as DUI at other schools.
It's not how many get arrested...you can't control kids and police in different cities treat athletes much differently. It's how the coach responds that defines character.
EE did not have the team in mind when he said he was done. If he was a reserve he might have been gone and a scholarship would have opened up. But he was needed so Urban had an awe shucks all is good press conference with him. Something, anything should have been done for being stupid. Skipping classes, robbery, assault, DUI, weed (or worse), public intox., etc. and a coach doesn't do anything because he doesn't want to punish the rest of the team? Wrong. It looks bad for him, but he was emotional and stupid. I'm not gonna punish the rest of my team for his stupidity.
I would use that as a teaching moment..which I assume many other teams did to tell them the importance of not taking out their frustrations publicly. Make it one of those "Team rules," so that moving forward everyone knows that there will be consequences.
I heard he immediately went to Meyer and apologized etc.... The incident is not worthy of thread.
First...arrests don't tell you squat...we covered this. Second, the DA doesn't arrest people, he prosecutes them and that's only relevant for serious stuff (which we get extremely little of in Iowa city in general). It's the police that matter. In some cities they help a drunk, underage football player get home. In Iowa city they take great glee in busting them. The DA in the East Lansing area is a Michigan grad. He has never ever done a Spartan a football player a favor. He takes every opportunity to throw prosecute MSU payers. Now go look up Spartan arrests over the past six to seven years (Dantonio players and rules). I'll stack that up against any team in the Big Ten, Especially the Hawkeys.
Weak!! He sent the signal that players r in control, that the coach can't afford to bench a high profile player. I watched Elliott yelling @ sidelines yesterday w that "feed me" gesture. Coach obliged for fear of Zeke. NO PLAYER is bigger than the team & starts calling out coaches after a loss. Same with Barrett, come on coach show who's boss & some control. I lost ALL respect for Meyer. No excuse!! Always questioned his character when he bailed on Florida without being honest.I think Meyer handled it appropriately. That's what the kids call "dissin" somebody. In this case the coaches were Dissed" on Nat TV. Can u imagine canzeri or Cj or anyone calling out a team mate after a game let alone a coach. I believe a respectable coach would privately ask the kid to think about if he wants to play for this TEAM for a wk or 2 before getting another opportunity to. These are private matters/discussions between coach & player. There are simply no parameters set there like @ Iowa. Exactly why Patriots are good. They play team ball won't accept egos. Buy in or be gone baby!!If you say so. You don't know the dynamics on that team though. Is it worth making an example out of one player if it costs you the rest of the team? In some cases your response is right, in others, it's not. Hard to say without being there.
