Every year we field a team that has at least one weight that may not qualify for national’s and if it does, won’t get any team points. This year 165 and 184 standout.

We are also limited on the number of wrestlers who will be good enough to stand on the top podium on Saturday night.

Quantity / depth

Just aren’t enough good backups to fill in when someone goes down. This year heavyweight is glaring. Not only does this hurt from the standpoint of win’s / loss, it also doesn’t provide quality room wrestlers that can develop the starter and as well as the backup.

I’m sure there will be those who will say “if the sun had come up in the west this year” or “if Stoll hadn’t gone down” or whatever, but this is a year in / year out occurrence. Not just this year. I guess my point is, we’re quick to go after individual wrestlers, but no one seems to want to discuss the staff and how they’re doing.

I stopped reading here. Defending B10 champ?

That's because if you are critical of the staff you get called out and attacked on this board by the same self righteous posters, even if you are right. They think they can determine who says what on this board by attacking.

if the fan base is happy only winning 3 matches and scoring 11 points against OSU and PSU, then we're good to go

Man you're a piece of work... No one is happy, we just don't think the sky is falling like the mouth breathing, fair weather fanbase does.

Penn State is really good, I can accept that.

We're currently not as good as Penn State, I can accept that.

We're taking steps to get better than Penn State, I can accept that.

I love it. We're doing great job recruiting and a new thread pops up asking if we can get someone from the football team to fill in at heavyweight.

Did you see Penn State's backup at 133? Every D1 program lacks depth.

Or Penn State's backup HWTs last year when Nevills went down. They were sending backup 174 pounders out there at one point. That's just the reality of college wrestling rosters, especially at HWT.

Iowa's "problem" started with the demise of Iowa high school talent. It was compounded by Carl's move to PSU. The trend has changed with the influx of Eastern talent, but get used to battling for second.
Iowa hs talent is as weak as ever. That's a huge disadvantage when you have to recruit kids to wrestle 600 miles from home.

Yeah, it would have been great to have Bradley in waiting, it wasn't his path and would have been much harder to give PSU crap about Halls age. The big weights are the hardest to fill, so many of the top wrestlers choose that sport called football, I believe you call it soccer.

We are finding our place and need to let some of our guys grow into the spots rather than throw them out there. The future is positive. Stoll really hurts and he never even got back to his freshman form. A heavy that pins at that rate, I really hope he can fully recover this time.

Our performance while similar in score to the OSU match, we performed better. We just need a little more from guys to make the match score reflect it. PSU is better than OSU and the Hawkeyes that wrestled (exception Brooks) PSU are better then the ones that wrestled OSU.

You just gotta love it when the football fans come out of the woodwork with their spot-on assessments of Iowa wrestling after big dual meets we happen to lose and at Nationals time.

"What? Gable's done? Is McIlravy hurt? I though Yagla was our guy at 150! Didn't see Randy Lewis last night -- must be in Brands' doghouse."

The current stable could be better yes, a few stallions but also a few, what my dad would call hay burners.. But we have some some young colts coming in. The future will be bright. Bet type = Win.

Hoping stoll can redshirt. Who knows. Two years from now Iowa will be staring at an incredible lineup of : lee, Teasdale, murin, happel, Turk, kemmerer, marinelli, young, Wilcke, warner, and stoll. Good times ahead.

This right here. We have very little D1 talent coming out of the state right now. We need to continue hammering Illinois and PA for guys or we won't be able to compete. On the bright side, the only multiple time AA I see in the future happens to be related to our HC so I think we will get him.

meant 197 not 184, my bad
You have to have your own self in order if your going to criticize some one else. You had one single thing to point out and botched that. Now do you realize how hard it is to manage hundreds upon hundreds of things?

And you're clearly not paying attention to our recruiting as of late...
I am indeed. wheres out backup heavyweight

Remember... We were supposed to have Bradley (HWT) in the program but after taking a 1 year mission he decided to give up wrestling before this season began. The plan was for him to be here... You can't pin a kid's personal decision on Tom Brands...

Good Lord sometimes it's easy to figure out why people hate Iowa so much.
Let's break it down..

125: GMAN didn't push the issue to much probably gave him a little to much respect. That being said That's probably the match we get Saturday night in St. Louis.
133: Clark is still not 100% but took advantage of a psu hole. That's right psu has a hole.
141: You guys amaze me. 1 week ago he loses in a battle with Heil and he is praised now he overhypes himself and gasses in the 3rd and you all destroy. He's fine guys he will learn from it. I will take Carton in a rematch. Don't know that either of them is a AA but both close.
149: Anybody that bashes Brandon for his performance last night can go to Hell. I guarantee you Rutherford was a bit scared last night. You could tell he was a bit shocked that BS took him down. That being said Rutherford is still better but they still are 1 & 2.
157: Nolf might be the best lb per lb wrestler in the country. Kem is tough and a little dinged up and still put up on HELL of a fight. Probably another Saturday night match up in St. Louis.
165: Gunther is crazy tough. He will give you all he can. I was not that impressed with Joseph. I truly believe Young or The BULL could beat the Joseph I saw last night.
174: Cael does what Cael does. Throws a true Frosh out there against a 5th year Senior in a hostile environment. Who by the way is a returning AA. Cael does what is good for Cael. No reason what so ever to send Hall out there last night other than ego. If KJ or any other coach in the country does that we would be all over him!! OK enough about that. Meyer makes me crazy!! 1 min I think he's terrible than he goes out and beats the Hall. Either way I think both are legit AA'S.
184: BAD match up for Brooks. As crazy as it sounds I would rather have him wrestle Dean. Bo probably gets 2nd and Brooks is anywhere from 3rd to 8th. But Both are AA.
197: Neither one of these guys are AA'S. Wilcke however will move to 184 next year and will.
Hwt: Stoll goes down again and Nevils beats up on our backup. Nevils is top 5 and we get squat out of hwt. now.
I guess all I trying to say wrestling has changed!! The Gable Era is over. You can't just out work people anymore. The kids that are coming will help us out a lot.

Great write up. Nolf is a monster but Imar is the best lb per lb wrestler in the country. Nolf is close second though. The G- man is our best shot at a NC this year. Suriano scares me. He will improve more over the next 2 months than Gilman will. Pulling the shirt on Hall was pure stupidity. That did help us out 5 years from now though. Hall is a good one just needs to physically develop.

Well when you......people are wrong, you're wrong.

You're welcome.

<< Coaching staff weren't getting it done from a recruiting standpoint>>

FIFY.

The recruits Iowa has for the classes of '17 and '18 are stellar. '16 wasn't too shabby.

In '15 we got Kemerer, but for many prior years, Iowa recruiting was too reliant on getting lower ranked guys with the idea that with good coaching and hard work, they would become national champions.

Imho, Iowa recruiting is now looking strong.
