Frustrating!

My computer skills are probably a 5/10. In other words I have "functional" skills, but when I run into problems I get stuck.

I have old home movies on DVD. I would like to covert them to an .mp4 or .mov file so I can have them on my PC and share with family. Using VLC, I was able to (eventually) figure out how to how to convert one into a video file - but it's a .VOB file. Even though I choose the output for .mp4, I got a .VOB. At least it works.

So, using the same software, I tried to convert it from .VOB to .mp4. When finished, my PC tells me it's a .mp4a file and won't run.

I've tired other conversion software like Any Video Converter and Handbrake - both convert the video to .mp4, but there is no audio!

I imagine I am doing something wrong, but can't figure it out.

I would greatly appreciate some advice to correct what I'm doing, or a better software for the conversion process. It doesn't even have to be a free software.

Thanks in advance!

For handbrake - the issue might be the preview but the exported video file should work. Did you get that far?

Sounds like you are just pulling the audio out of the vob file.

If vob works....why change it. You already have it in a great format to share as a file or make a DVD out of

Re reading...it does more and more sound like you are only pulling audio, or video.

Any of the formats is basically something similar to a zip file thats holds separate files for audio and video.

Try looking into Adobe stuff, like Media Encoder or Adobe Express.

They even have a free encoder for adobe express:

I haven’t tried it, so your mileage may vary.

In my DVD ripping days I used DVDshrink, and I used that to get the vobsets off the disc. I'd then use VOB2DVD to convert that into mpg (mpeg 2). There was a bit of a hoop to jump through after getting the vobsets to my hard drive (it would also bring down the special features etc, which you can delete those files out) - the deletions were easy, and all I really wanted was to create a single file without menus anyway.

Both of those were free and for the most part worked pretty well. I just made sure I unchecks the "shrink" part to where it didn't compress the vobsets at all.

But again, that's an eventual conversion to mpeg 2, not mp4. Then maybe you could use Handbrake to convert the mpg file to mp4.

I also used MakeMKV for DVD's and BD's more recently, but that again converts to MKV format (which work on both Windows and Mac from what I remember). I rarely used it for DVD but it was fantastic for most the BD's I ripped.

i was going to tag you as “the man” to ask but you beat me to it :)
in case you’ve forgotten, a long while back you’d helped me out with a av situation..

Yeah, used to be really big into video creation etc. But switching from DirecTV and a set top box to YTTV has cut that to practically nothing any more.

Nowadays, mainly just Iowa football games and that's about it.

Handbrake to rip and convert the DVD to anything you want.

If Blu-Ray, you’ll need to use something like MakeMKV to rip the disk, then Handbrake to convert the MKV to what you want.

4K same as Blu-Ray, but you’ll need a specialized disk drive.

I rip blurays and DVDs with makemkv and convert the mkv file in handbrake to MP4.
