It's early, but I'm a little worried. His activity level is WAY down from last year, he gassed against ISU, he looked middling against SDSU. I understand that there are reasons for why, but it's just something I've been noting in the early part of the season. I hope it straightens out.

Yes, he's 10-0, so I'm extremely worried.

But seriously, the match v ISU was much too close for comfort. He needs a better gas tank. That seemed to be an issue last season in a few matches.

Not sure if wrestling at 157 vs 149 in that he needs to use more energy to wrestle the bigger guys is the issue but he has looked rather flat and sluggish to me.

That's my assumption. It's pretty draining to wrestle guys bigger than you. I love his attacking style, he's by far the most aggressive guy we have on top. But he might find catch-and-release to be less taxing than trying to control and turn guys this season. On the other hand, I hate to see a guy get into the habit of being less aggressive. Hopefully he just works through it during the season then finds a way to make his way to the podium at the end of the year.

I will say if he AA's this year it would be a heck of an accomplishment. And it's no knock on him if he doesn't make it.

Sorenson had a similar performance in his first match with a big crowd in Carver against Moreno. I remember a lot of the same conversation going on about Sorenson and his gas tank. Kem will be just fine and only get better as the season goes on.

If you following the general theme on this board the last few years, it feels like we are all begging for guys to peak in March but the guys are either injured or show signs of burnout by then. Kemerer is probably fine, but it's a freightening reminder of a pattern in the past where guys decline in productivity and performance. Injuries are unavoidable but there does seem to be a pattern. Here's hoping they break that this year.

Chalk me up as a bit concerned.

However, it is still early and he is young. His performance will show whether or not we need to be concerned.

Wrestle a guy bigger than him? The ISU kid isn't any bigger than Kemerer.

I agree with the rest of your post--I think his strategy played right into ISU's hands. He seemed to think he could reverse/funk with that guy. I don't think that's his game.

He is undefeated, he is learning how to balance long-term training vs short term competing and you haven't seen midland results yet.

I have believed the Hawk fanbase as a group has over reached with the collective belief he is automatically a B1G/NCAA finalist. I do not necessarily see him as the wrestler opposite Nolf in the NCAA finals, but he is winning and he will continue to win most of his matches. If it was me I would wait and see if he continues to improve b4 I got all worked up.

Just saying.

First BIG match at CHA and I'm definitely not concerned. Actually happy that he gutted it out. Showed heart. He'll prepare the emotions better next time.
This IS a thing. The first match in Carver has snakebite the best of them. I may be mistaken but I think Lincoln Mac was tech falled or nearly tech falled in his first Carver match.

Not saying there isn't things to be a little worried about in Kemerer, but I don't think we have to worry about him gassing in a couple mins of wrestling in ever match. The ISU match was classic nerves combined with missing out on a fall he nearly had.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the reasons Brands has the Iowa City Duals is to take a little of the edge off of wrestling in Carver for some of the younger guys on the team.

My concern watching him against Iowa State was that he was gassed, as others have said. But my bigger concern was that he was a tad reckless in his moves...almost Sammy Brooks like. Kem looked like he pulled off a great move and had the ISU guy in trouble, but then discovered he'd put himself in trouble (I think on 3 occasions during the match). If he does the same thing against one of the top tier guys, it could be curtains. And of course Sammy didn't let me down in that he had one of his classic moves of taking himself down, before destroying the poor ISU guy. Again, doesn't hurt until you're up against the top tier guys.

It looks to me like he's not quite strong enough vs 157 yet, which adds another element to a person's conditioning. He'll adjust and be fine. I feel like he'll start catching stride during the B10 season and will finish as an AA, IMO.

McIlravy lost by Major Decision to Paul Andreotti of Northwestern in his CHA debut.

And . . . not long after that in the fOSU dual he got lateral dropped to his head and nearly pinned, went down 6-1, injured - trainer and Cable put his cranium back on, and then Mac beat the piss out of I think Charles Becks - just destroyed him.

I think Kem is young and is just discovering how much tougher the real D1 competition is. In addition, he was going for the big move in his first real CHA match and that almost cost him a match. It reminded me so much on Brandon's first match in CHA a few years ago. Let's hope that Kem has a similar path like Brandon in years to come.

Personally, I thought the ISU kid looked bigger, plus he had good hips which made for some funky scrambles. I think Kem has the talent to succeed at this weight class, but he might get out horsed from time to time.
I agree. Kemerer tends to be tall, but DiBlasi (?) was a bit taller. That and his funkiness negated some of Kem's leverage advantage. Kemerer DID get gassed. I'll bet he gets that fixed, however.

Not worried long term but for this year, yes a little bit bc I like many others was planning on a top 5 finish which won't happen without a better gas tank. What's concerning to me is he's gassed before as well which makes me wonder if it's not more physiological vs. training related? Some guys have the ability to develop adequate gas tanks, some don't.

Ok, highly ranked coming in, a natural `149 wrestling up at 157 to help the team.
I have no worries here, Kem will work it out some way. Lets just wait and see what he can do
at Midlands.
Now have no idea how it goes in the room. Can he handle Brandon now no one would
approve if he went down and beat out Brandon. Right.
So relax and may you all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Tend to agree. Realistically, it's hard to see him as an ncaa finalist this season. More likely mid level AA.

He's still a bit undersized, and needs better endurance. Right now, I think he'd get mauled by Nolf, possibly getting pinned.

Who will not get mauled by Nolf? Other than maybe Smith he can & WILL beat everybodyelse at 157.

My concerns are over the activity level in matches. It just hasn't looked anything like he looked last year. JMO. I would obviously love for the concerns to be alleviated, but only a fool just blindly ignores something that is actually happening on the mat.

I was worried this board wouldn't overreact to this match like they did a couple years ago when Sorensen did the same thing against isu. Silly me.

Can you imagine the cliff jumping that would have occured after burning Lincoln's RS and watching him get destroyed in CHA?

I don't have any concerns. The kid is real good, I know that already. He's wrestling up a weight for all intents and purposes it appears, and maybe he's a little concerned about that aspect of it. Don't know, don't really care at this point. Either he'll work it out or he'll get his ass kicked. All up to him. I'm leaning towards he'll work it out until proven otherwise.

All of the above concerns and.......................

I wish he was ranked 14th right now instead of 4th.

If Kemerer was our 165 or 184, ya I might be a little nervous. Much more room for error at 157. I'll wait until after Midlands before I get too worked up.
