I don't think talent was the issue. Defense, rebounding, and ultimately effort were.
ISU is using effort and timely big games by Brockington, Kalschuer, and Hunter this year to make it work. I'm not sure it's sustainable as the year goes on. Other teams will figure it out or those players will regress to the mean.
I don't think this game is a complete indictment of Iowa, it's just that they have their weaknesses and don't seem to be improving at a fast enough rate to solve it before they face the better foes or conference teams.

I’m impressed by how well he has the transfers and freshman playing together. Very impressive coaching job.
It is difficult to shut down 3 good athletic guards, the better teams have strong guard play.
Hunter will only get better and most likely not regress.
They play very good defense, you will always have a chance to win games by doing this.
Virginia won an NCAA title with defense (not saying ISU wins a title but defense wins you a lot of games)

This is such an awful take. What do you have against Kalscheur, Kunc, Brockington, Enaruna, or Jones? You’re saying they’re all “douches”?
Based on what we saw yesterday, I would have guessed ISU had the players who cared about the school. One team played with a ton of effort and intensity and one team absolutely did not.
And yeah, rooting for this team, after the last few years, is an absolute blast.
It's the name of the game with the portal. Props to ISU for putting a strong team together so quickly. This thread is sour grapes.
For the record caring about the program comes from the top, and while I admittedly didn't want ISU to hire TJ having a guy who cares this much means a lot.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Some of Hoiberg's early transfers had a certain amount of stink on them, but this crew seems composed of guys that were simply unhappy with their former situation and opted to make a change. I'm not going to blame them for that and frankly, I wish McCaffery had taken a closer look at the long list of players available and plucked out a few.

Yeah, I don't buy into the "chemistry" crap. Get the best players you can and practice like you do every year and the "chemistry" will be fine.
Iowa lost this game because they missed a lot of easy shots, they were in the lead in the first half until they went 4-29 from the field. That will get you beat, every time.
And lastly, I wish Fran McCaffery had daughters.
