Congrats to the Kansas-Minnesota-Penn/Washington/Iowa State Cyclones

College hoops (and athletics in general) are changing; four-year players in the same program are becoming abnormal and creating teams who buy into your style via the transfer portal is how coaches are getting it done. Fran needs to figure it out before he gets too far behind the times.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Some of Hoiberg's early transfers had a certain amount of stink on them, but this crew seems composed of guys that were simply unhappy with their former situation and opted to make a change. I'm not going to blame them for that and frankly, I wish McCaffery had taken a closer look at the long list of players available and plucked out a few.
Exactly. They have even kicked a few of the scum players to the curb (foster and one other dude I believe).
also I wonder if teams playing Xavier think that nunge is scum. You know the same guy everyone on here seems to respect and have no I’ll will towards him leaving and getting a fresh start.
fran worries more about hurting players feelings. Screw that, start going after some guys that can help you win. Stop bringing back a guy for his 6th year (jbo) or a feel good story (ash) because you don’t want to bring in another guy that might be better and takes minutes from your boys.

Yeah, I don't buy into the "chemistry" crap. Get the best players you can and practice like you do every year and the "chemistry" will be fine.

Iowa lost this game because they missed a lot of easy shots, they were in the lead in the first half until they went 4-29 from the field. That will get you beat, every time.

And lastly, I wish Fran McCaffery had daughters.

Agreed ... "chemistry" happens when teams win. "Chemistry" breaks down when teams lose.

Unfortunately, this isn’t tru. As someone that follows ASU (alum), it doesn’t quite work like that. Hurley has a lot of talent come through and can’t coach a lick.

Iowa State beat Iowa under the current rules related to recruiting and transfers. No violations of those rules by ISU. Iowa had the same opportunity to run players off and recruit the portal. Or in some cases dismiss them from the team for bad behavior. And when that is not good enough you can do what Kansas, Arizona, and etal have done to get the top recruits. Just win baby! is the modern day model and any ethics be damned.

Oetzel's conscience isn't troubled by using the methods necessary to compete in today's college basketball arena nor are transfer recruits. It's a "what's in it for me world" . "Doing it the right way" is now "do it any old way". Fran's problem is that he hasn't adapted to the "do it any old way". As long as the fans and boosters are happy to ignore the ethics behind team building then so be it. Everybody does it so we might as well. There is very little ethics in left in college basketball and what ethics that are left are dinosaur remains. .

Absolutely nothing unethical about how TJ built the team.
In short term, he prolly had no other choice to be able to even field a complete roster. I’ll be curious in long-term if TJ continues to use the portal every year, or try to develop younger players recruited out of high school?

I think what a lot of people are forgetting is that until this year, the book on TJ was that he was a great recruiter but his coaching ability was unknown. He was generally given credit for recruiting most of the really good players who have come to ISU in the recent decade. He has three good-looking commitments for next year, high school kids.

Regardless of where the players came from, they still have to execute. ISU smoked Iowa in every category other than number of lineup changes possibly. Will ISU tear through the Big 12? Unlikely, as they will face teams capable of defending Brockington and coaches who have been able to teach the fundamentals of rebounding.

All this bs about recruiting traditional players is absurd IMO. Nunge left. CJ left. I am sure after this season a couple more guys will leave. I don't blame them, but you can't bank on loyalty from kids or guarantee this will be the right fit for them. If it makes Iowa more competitive and the kids do the work in the classroom, I could care less where they come from. Adults change jobs. Kids change schools. It happens. I don't recall any complaints about Recker, Uthoff, or Haluska being "transfers".
