I am looking at the future and trying to figure it all out. I know about the whole scholarship speculation, does he get one, does he not. I am not looking for opinions, just wonder if there is an actual update on what his plans are. I don't believe he signed anything to this point.
Is there an actual update?? not just speculation
Thanks

For now the update is that Connor will not sign a LOI because walk ons don't sign LOI's. Right now the plan is still for him to play basketball and baseball.

Now for some speculation : I think there is an outside chance that Connor plays baseball professionally and doesn't come to Iowa next fall.
Most likely I think Connor will be on scholarship next year given that there is an average of about 2 transfers per team each year.

No shot he plays professional baseball out of high school.

I wouldn't go as far to say there is no shot, he is an athletic 6'6" left handed arm and bat.....those are far from a dime a dozen. In fact, I would venture to say he has a much better chance at making a professional career our of playing baseball than he does playing basketball

Raw position players aren't valued like raw pitchers. He will not be drafted out of high school. He has great potential after a few years in college and I agree, he certainly has a chance then to play professional baseball.

In the last eight years, there has been one prep position player from the state of Iowa who has signed a professional contract.

I believe it's no shot he chooses to play pro baseball right out of HS. He will probably be drafted. Unless he's a high first round pick with millions in signing bonus - that's probably a long shot

There have only been five prep position players drafted since '08 in the state of Iowa. He will not be drafted.

I agree with all of the above in that he will not be drafted top tier, and will probably walk on at Iowa in hoops. He's a great kid, a top student, and a fine player (6-5 versatile guard), but I think he would not be getting all the hoopla if he weren't Fran's boy. His advantage is that he is smart, can lead, and can take the ball to the rim with his size. As a shooter, he's maybe not as good as Green from CF or Weiskamp from Muscatine, but he is good and will definitely play at Iowa. . .

Going to pro baseball straight out of HS would be a big mistake... being drafted in rounds 20+ (let's be honest, he wouldn't be drafted until at least round 30) have such a small chance of actually making money from baseball.

I think prep baseball in Iowa is light years ahead of Minnesota, actually. Spring baseball doesn't really help one's development.
Oh absolutely, I meant more for scouting purposes. I love summer baseball vs play 20 games and getting snowed out a lot. It more makes it difficult to have a great senior year and be noticed unless you go to a lot of showcases or have a good soph, junior year. Other states that senior year can still make a difference as far as drafted or not.

Back when I played we used to go down to Florida or Arizona once a year in the spring for tournaments. Helped get some of us exposure to college and pro scouts. However we still only played baseball about 5-6 months of the year. Today the state I live in I've got a high school kid that works for me part time that plays baseball 10 months out of the year. He has offers from a couple dozen colleges and has been scouted a couple times by the pro's. This all before his SR season. He's darn good but really no better than some of the guys I used to play with who at the same stage were lucky to have half a dozen offers. The Iowa system does hurt kids some.

Even if Connor is good enough to earn a scholarship next year his dad can easily pay his tuition thus Connor could play as a walkon leaving a scholarship for another player.

Doug Mc Dermott was the national player of the year at Creogjtpm in his senior year he was a walk on at Creighton to leave a scholarship for a player who the NCAA awarded either a 5th or 6th year of eligibility because of injuries during his career.

That would be Grant Gibbs - another ex-Linn-Mar player.

FWIW, KCRG is doing a feature on their news today about life with the McCafferys. It was mentioned that Connor will be joining his Dad on the Hawkeyes next season. Maybe not the definitive word, but you would think if there was some doubt, Scott Saville wouldn't have made that statement. Fran then said that the next four years with the three of them together on the Hawkeyes, could be the best years of their lives.

Did I read last year something about the rules were complicated and Iowa wouldn't necessarily be allowed to save a scholarship by allowing Connor as a walkon?

Nope.

Connor will walk on if no schollies come open. And unless DJ can heal and play, he might just take his degree and move on.

I'd be very surprised if DJ returns. We will lose at least one more besides DJ depending on how the playing time is earned.

And if two leave that gives scholarships for Nunge, Garza and Conner. I'm predicting in a completely fan only not serious way that three will leave, meaning we end up with an open scholarship after the sort of minor worries about how this will all work out. :)
