Cool scene in ames

There are probably a half dozen posts on CyFan now that begin, "If only we could play Iowa now....."
I never go there, but I wouldn't be surprised. And many times in days of yore, when ISU beats Iowa, the same sentiment was displayed by some posters here. If the teams had played later, etc., etc., etc.

Except in '01, when the game was moved to the last of the season. Then there were posts here saying that if they had played early, as scheduled, Iowa would have won.

Happens everywhere, Ron.

The thing clown fans refuse to understand is that oSU and WVU are not/were not anywhere close to worthy of their rankings...and not just because they lost to ISU.

While WVU had a nice first game win vs Tenn, they haven't played anyone else of note and definitely were not worthy of a #6 ranking. oSU knocked off Boise St at home, but other than that they were 1-1 vs P5 schools (L vs TTU, W vs KU) prior to playing ISU.

Bottom line, them beating two T25 teams back to back weekends is a mirage... i.e. FAKE NEWS!

I'll pull for the Cyclones when they are playing any Big12 team anytime I want to and I don't care what anyone else thinks. I've been a Hawkeye since 1958 and none of these Johnny Come Latelys on this board can make it different.

You guys ain't revoking shit.
I am with you bean.

ISU fans want a do-over against Iowa. Hawks want a do-over against Wisky.

Clones looked good. Really liked the black unis.

Second year in a row that a 3rd-string ISU QB is killing ranked Big 12 teams. Does no one in the Big 12 even try to play good Defense? Or does ISU have more QB depth than every other recent FBS team—tOSU included?

I flipped over a couple of times. First to see the uni’s which seemed awful to me. Their colors are red and yellow so they wear black. Ok whatever. In the second half, the crowd seemed dead with a 14 point lead on a top 10 team. Fans also seemed to struggle getting onto the field. Other then that it was an impressive win.

Their coach has made no secret that he wants to model ISU after us. I'm guessing he'll have the visitors' locker room painted pink by season's end. Kind of embarrassing, but cute. I think they're struggling with the fact that they've beaten two ranked* Big 12 teams and still haven't gotten a single AP vote. Gotta be hard.

I'll bite. I'm not sure ISU would win it, but I think it would be a good game with more points scored by both teams.

Joel Klatt has sounded off quite a bit on how it is a myth they don't play defense in the Big 12. According to him, only lazy uniformed people make those statements. Here is a little write up with reference to the Iowa vs Wisconsin game.

That was the worst excuse for a #6 team ever. Nice D by WVU - who plays a 3-3 defense anymore? They made running the ball a gimme besides the fact they can’t tackle. And no answer for a 3 man rush. Kept trying to solely pass it into 8 man coverage. Big12 stinks.
Yep, they looked like straight garbage to me. ISU had beat OK st the week before, so I can't imagine WVU completely overlooked the game. I think they just suck lol

Ya, just like wisconsin and penn state were not worthy of their rankings either. B1g west is very weak! ;)

If you're talking back to back "games" against ranked opponents, the last time Iowa did it was in 2004-

#9 Wisconsin, won 30-7
#12 LSU, won 30-25 (Outback Bowl)

If you're talking back to back "weeks", then last time would be all the way back in 1960, when Iowa accomplished what is probably an even rarer feat of beating 4 straight ranked opponents, and in 4 straight weeks. (fyi, Iowa played 6 straight ranked opponents in 1960 and went 5-1 in that stretch)-

at #13 Michigan State, won 27-15
#12 Wisconsin, won 28-21
#16 Purdue, won 21-14
#19 Kansas, won 21-7

Iowa was ranked 3rd, 2nd, and #1 twice, respectively, in those games.
According to Sports Reference we won our first 6 games in '60 and our entire schedule was against ranked team except our finale at Notre Dame.

Hickory Park is way overrated. Woody's Smoke Shack was easily the best in central IA before new ownership took over. Not sure now but it's definitely not Hickory Park.

Way overrated... and a perfect example of the limited perspective on the world at large possessed by those in Story County.

Yep looks like Northwestern was ranked 6th when we played them. They weren't ranked on the site I checked, and to be fair they didn't finish ranked, but still as far as currently ranked, 1960 Iowa may have been the only team in college football history to both face their first 8 games, and 8 games consecutively, against ranked opponents.

You would be hard pressed to find teams throughout college football history that played 5 in a row, let alone 8.

This had me curious because I then went back and looked up Alabama's schedules and as far as I can tell the most they ever faced was 4 in a row, a few times ;) (SEC and all......see their 2016 schedule btw).

The weekly pissing match continues. I try to stay above the fray, but will offer a few thoughts

#1 Not a fan of the black unis. Our colors are cardinal + gold. I dont mind some variation with grey, or even black trim. At the same time, I recognize MC needs to do this to appease the 18-22 yr old fascination w/alt. unis.

#2 I can see the argument that Big 12 doesnt play defense, but the same can be said for Big 14 teams. Case in point: the defensive average from yesterday's Big14 games was 34.7 vs 25.1 for Big 12. I know its a small sample size, but illustrates my point. Im sure someone with more time on their hands will expand my limited research. The point is I think its a convenient argument to say that the Big 12 plays no defense. Iowa State does. Its awesome to watch.

#3 The "do-over" argument is stupid. Every team would love to play someone again. Iowa included. If Iowa State's first game wasnt cancelled. If Purdy was the QB then, etc. Hindsight is always 20/20. Iowa won. They were better on that day. End of story. Move on.

#4 Rankings. First of all, can we all try to argue that they really mean nothing? Outside of Bama and Clemson, the rest of the pack doesnt matter. Was WV the 6th best team in the country? Probably not, but they were undefeated. The game I watched night certainly showed me that their ranking was a tad high, but give credit to ISU for really taking it to them. Same goes for Okie State. Probably not #25 when ISU played them, but give ISU credit for winning on the road. If the tables were turned, and Iowa beat #25 and #6 on back to back weeks, Im guessing people may be singing a different tune.

While we are talking about inflated rankings, its possible that Wisky and Penn State may have been ranked too high? Maybe people gave up on Michigan too early? Same goes with Texas and probably a lot of other teams. Its all about playing well, who you play, when you play, and where you play.

ISU is ahead of where I thought they would be this season. Was hoping to split OSU and WV. Rest of season looks promising, but I remain cautiously optimistic. Purdy looks great, but ISU has a long list of "young QBs" who never really panned out. I hope he is the exception. Iowa is probably exactly where fans tbought they would be. Being ranked is probably nice, but really means nothing. Time will tell where each team goes.

As always, just my opinion I could be wrong....

Funny you quoted my post which made no reference to the defense. Talk about lazy and uninformed. Lol.

No one explained why the crowd was dead with a 14 point lead against a top 10 team either? Was the crowd in shock or were the black uni’s hard to see? It’s hard to take a fanbase seriously when their home crowd doesn’t even know what’s going on.

The crowd was awesome! Not sure where you're getting your info. It was a blast.

There is a bit of that, but honestly I think both teams have improved a ton. I think Iowa would honestly win again, but it'd be another close game. Regardless fans of both programs have a lot to be happy with.

I guarantee you Campbell had a say in the black unis. Dude loves black. He wears a black ISU hat almost 100% of the time.

Agree ... WVA was not the 6th best team in the country. They've beat the likes of Youngstown State, Kansas, Kansas State, and they did catch Texas tech ... And Okie State is not a good team either ... I give ISU credit for playing well in both games and it looks like they found a QB ... but WVA and Okie State are not good teams.

You are probably right just as Northern Ill, Northern IA, Minnesota and Indiana didn't deserve their ranking. No wait.......

"And these 2 garbage teams isu beat in a row should be considered as well. Osu will prove to be trash and if that was the #6 team in the country, yikes.[/QUOTE]

You're really saying that with the schedule that Iowa has played so far? You guys should be cheering for the Clones from here on out. It will prove to be the hawks best quality win in the regular season or 2nd best win, depending on how you do at Penn State. It still amazes me how a team can possibly go 10-2 without a single win over a ranked team. Oh that's right. Play in the Big 10 West and avoid 3 of the top teams on the other side.
