Cordell Pemsl, Dubuque Wahlert Freshman

Let's see how he does against better competition but so far so good. I like Cordell a lot.

He is a unique talent. You don't have to be a basketball genius to tell that he has a skill set that is going to make him very productive on the offensive end for the next 4 years. Big body, wide caboose, quicker than you'd expect and can go to each hand. Just good instincts around the hoop, very creative. He is already better than Uhl and probably should start, but I like him coming off the bench as an offensive spark. Haven't seen enough of Kreiner or Bohannon yet to judge them, but between Cook and Pemsl I think this is already the best freshman class we've had in several years, probably going back to Horner/Brunner.

I have always had high hopes for Cordel as he was so talented and multi-dimensional at Wshlert and I got to see him a lot.

I was hoping he would make it to 6-9 or 10 as I thought with his overall ball skills and a D1 weight program he might be special. Also, he was never fully healthy his h.s. career and was worried that the knee injury might really hinder his potential. Knock on wood, but the knee injury seems to behind him.

The last thing I will say is he is a great kid. Coachable, humble, hard working and loves the game. You add talent and a coach like FMac into the equation who will let him spread his wings and just go out and play, I hope we are seeing the start of a special player in the years to come.

I read your thread title and for a split second thought there might be two Cordell Pemsls.

Some Georges Niang in Cordell's game. Anthony Mason as well.

I like his game a lot. He has the wide body, playmaking, scoring and rebounding ability. But the thing that I really like about Pemsl is his aggressiveness- confidence. He plays hard and isn't afraid to be the competitive aggressor and make plays. Combine all that with IQ and instincts and there is a lot of game there

He's just one of those kids that knows how to play the game. Solid floor game, knows how to post up, solid with the ball, can face up and put it on the deck. Just a really solid player with good instincts. Really gonna be a good player

Cordell and teammates are going to face very much tougher competition in the paint starting Thursday. I've watched Cordell all through high school and he is the all-time leading scorer in Dubuque high school history. He is not flashy, but is very consistent. He's led his high school team to win eight out of nine state tournament games in the past three years and the last would have been a victory if teammate 6-7 forward Maiers (now playing for Briar Cliff College) hadn't missed the championship game with a serious injury, allowing the opponent to put three tall guys on Cordell so he basically couldn't do much of anything. I'm still hoping he can stay healthy and that the fans have patience with all the young guys on this team. Cook, Dailey, Kriener, Pemsl and Bohannon are all going to have some serious jitters come Thursday night when the favored and taller Seton Hall club comes to town. Good shots are going to be hard to come by, and I think the veteran players like Jok, Baer and the older big guys carry us in this one.

I've said since I first saw his highlight tape, he reminded me of a poor man's Niang. Not a great jumper, but knows how to use his body and angles, good post moves, good handles for a big guy, passing and vision. I guess what remains to be seen is an outside shot.

Not a great jumper but a hell of allot better jumper than Niang.

Talked to a guy that was at both the Friday and Sunday games and he was extremely impressed with Pemsl.

He's TEN times the player as Niang.

:) Go Hawks

He was a pretty big time recruit prior to getting hurt in high school. He is still on the way back from that injury which really limited his jumping and running ability. I think he is still about a year away from being back full strength but there is no doubt he has some skills.

He is never going to be the kind of player that wows you with his pure athleticism. He will wow you with shooting, passing, handling for his size. Remember, rebounding isnt ALL about height and jumping. Sometimes the best rebounders are the wide bodies.

With two significant knee injuries prior to coming to Iowa, this is certainly a concern.

Think I remember a thread about his knee problems and talk about his knees actually being stronger now after surgery. Something about being born with bad knees. Hopefully that is the case.

The doctors actually broke his legs intentionally to correct a congenital structural problem. So they should be better now.

One leg. But I am a fan of doing what works. So if Pemsl keeps playing this well line up some other guys for a leg break after the season!

Definitely the most efficient Hawkeye on the offensive end through the first two games. Can't wait to see where his game goes from here on out. Seems to have great hands and the ability to make a good pass. What's not to like about this young man?

He will diffently be tested tonight

Fun to see how he will do against stronger taller post players
