Anybody not going to Big Tens or possibly Nationals because of Coronavirus?

We (myself and my son) are scheduled to go to the Nationals and very excited to watch Iowa bring back home the National Championship!!

But, my wife and many others have been bringing up the Coronavirus and are trying to advise myself and son to not go, because of the concern with the virus. Been counting down to this weekend and the Nationals weekend for quite some time.

I know this post will probably bring about all kinds of jokes,

But in all seriousness anybody bailing on not going because of the virus??

Just wanted to get some serious takes on the matter and what the "Cesspool" is thinking?

I did find it interesting, a person we know is scheduled to go over to Europe within a week and she cannot get a refund with Traveler's insurance. She consulted her priest and his response was "If God is ready for you, he will be ready for you!"

Can't wait until tomorrow and then Nationals!!!

Go Hawks!! Bring it home!! Bonus Points!! Bonus Points!!
Go get it Brands & Co!!!

This comment isn't directed at you and your wife personally, but rather society in general. In my opinion, this concern about coronavirus is the ultimate in paranoia and overreaction. As someone posted yesterday, you have a better chance of winning Megamillions than dying from the virus. It's simply a type of flu, and almost everyone who dies from it are elderly with pre-existing compromised health.

Do you think "I shouldn't drive because I might get in an accident and die?" Of course not! But driving is much more dangerous than going to the NCAAs! Go enjoy the greatest wrestling event in the world, and celebrate a Hawks win in person!!

255 and Mendoza77. I hear you!! I agree also, sometimes it makes it tough when you have other people telling you all of this stuff, and actually my wife is overall fine with it, it's more of the people around her, raising her anxiety. And sometimes that makes it tougher when you have other people around you constantly bringing it up. Thanks for your thoughts!! GO HAWKS!!

And... I will be likely be fine if I get it. But my friend who is on anti-rejection medications, my grandparents, other family members and loved ones who are on immunosuppresant drugs, my friend with slightly scarred lungs from repeated pneumonia infections, and people like them may not be fine. That's where my concern lies.

I am avoiding all travel. I have a golf trip planned to North Carolina. I will drive it or cancel.

My crew from college is literally 15 doctors out of 18 people. Scattered around the country. Here is what they are telling me:

-Mortality rate is unknown since not all cases are being reported.

-even in survivors, fibrosis is likely. Surviving corona virus isn’t like surging the flu. We are talking permanent damage.

-you can be a carrier and give it to other people without getting sick immediately. As such, after you travel to an airport, or, to a concert or any other gathering of more than 50 people with the average distance between people being 6 ft or less, self administered partial quarantine from all high risk people is recommended. Don’t go visit nana in the nursing home a week after nationals.

-wash your hands every chance you get. Women, or men traveling with women should keep an isopropyl based alcohol solution in a spray bottle in their purse. Hand sanitizer is at a premium. Running alcohol and essential oils make a great substitute and can be made at home easily.

-don’t underestimate this. China hasn’t gotten this under control and they’ve introduced draconian travel restrictions wherein all people are color coded based on potential risk without ever having seen a doctor. You can be travel restricted simply because you took the subway at the same time as 7 people coming from an infected area. we’re not doing anything of the sort.

In short, yes, I am changing my habits and I am not going to bigs even though I live 45 min away and my dad is walking distance to the rac.

In less than much seriousness, I created the following easy-to-understand, high-to-low, panic scale for our Coronavirus response, sort of like the grouchy face pain scales they use at doctors’ offices. I’ll let each of you make your own individual judgements regarding where we are and where we should be.

Remain calm all is well

Bread and milk

Why are you trying to kill me?

I’d keep playing.

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Son there ain’t no draft.

It just doesn’t matter.

I'm not going this year, but this virus would not keep me away. Only thing that would keep me away is World War Z virus.

It’s not any different than going anywhere in the winter without a flu shot.

The only going that would give me pause (at my age and health) would be if I cared for an elderly or sickly family member.

I’d go in a heartbeat, and I’m 70 but in good health. If I had any symptoms I’d do the responsible thing and stay away. Obviously hand washing, and avoiding handshakes, hugs, fist pumps, etc as much as possible isn’t a bad idea...

You sound like a relatively young man, coming from a guy over 70. Everything I read for most folks that contract Covid-19 have symptoms no worse than the common flu and recover within a week or so. Folks my age, not so much. However, I wouldn't want to be the opinion that put on go mode and have you 2 get sick. If I would have known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.

Thank you for posting this, I was going to myself.

I've grown increasingly frustrated with people buying into what politicians are saying on what should-be* a non-political issue.

The CDC is not spreading conspiracies or trying to sabotage the current administration.

There are over 100,000 cases. The death rate is above 3%, and no widespread method to test for it yet. And the Fed just cut the interest by .5% for the first time since 2008. This is a big deal and granted, just because many of us aren't in the at-risk of death demographic doesn't mean it should be brushed off as a 'hoax.'

Sorry if I took your link post out of context lol

It’s still early and the WHO doesn’t know a great deal about COVID-19 but they are being cautious by using actual data and the WHO numbers indicate a Global 3.4% mortality rate (The Spanish flu of 1918 had a 2.5% mortality rate and it killed 50 million people).

While the 3.4% is possibly skewed for a variety of reasons and might go down, rather than dismiss it they are smartly taking precautions as should you. That said, the overall profile of the disease, including its mortality rate, is much more serious than the seasonal flu (even at 1% is 10x more deadly).

There is reason to be concerned. WHO and CDC don’t go to these lengths to appease public hysteria. Do as much research as you can from reputable sources and base your decision off that.

Under no circumstances put the safety of you or your family in jeopardy based on erroneous uninformed opinions from those on a wrestling forum or facebook group. Only you know your situation or the risks you are willing to take or not take. Personally, I would burn the whole world down to protect my family so skipping some large events until scientists know
more is a no brainer.

Keep this in mind, while you may not have an underlying health issue, if you get infected, mild as it may be, you will likely transmit it to someone who does. That’s exactly how pandemics happen-the mildly symptomatic go about their daily lives and infect everyone else. The precautions healthy people take right now will have a vital role in protecting the most vulnerable and in minimizing the overall trajectory of Coronavirus. It ain’t just you living in this world.

I live in the Princeton, NJ area and was lucky to see the Hawks here this season. Still checking tickets for the B10 on Stubhub, some pretty good deals to be had. Downside - some of those deals are because of people here are bailing due to the Coronavirus outbreak. NJ now has confirmed cases and nearby NYC is up to 33. I will probably still go. YOLO.

As someone posted yesterday, you have a better chance of winning Megamillions than dying from the virus.

Not even close actually. Mega Millions jackpot odds are 1 in 259 million. Death rate for the seasonal flu is about 0.1%, or about 1 in 1000. Coronavirus reported mortality of 3.4% (WHO) is probably overestimated a fair amount, according to my best friend from med school who is an infectious disease specialist, but will almost certainly end up being significantly higher than the flu, maybe 0.5-1%. Most deaths will be in the elderly and those with co-morbid medical conditions, but some young, healthy people will die as well.
Best advice is to wash your hands and be wary of those coughing as far as droplet spread (if within 6 feet minimize eye/nose contact with your own hands until you can clean your hands). Stay safe.

I am going! I am going to enjoy the BiG10 championships.
I am going to stay away from excess contact with the public as best I can. I am going to have a bar of Defense soap in my pocket and I will wash my hands as often as I hit the Head.
When I get to the hotel I will make sure and put my dirty draws and smelly socks in a draw tight plastic bag along with anything I was wearing that someones snot could have attached to!
Along with spraying my vehicle interior down with Lysol. I will bring my dirty, stinky, Snot ridden clothes to a laundry mat and wash them before I go home to my family.
If this is not enough then so be it!

And nevermind that the flu is already prevalent in the world. Coronavirus is being reacted to like it is because we don't want to add another widespread, deadly virus to our world. Easier to snuff it out early than late, when millions are infected.

Not that I'm advocating people stay home or anything.

My wife has traveled round trip via airport 3 times in the last week and was scheduled to fly into Philly and drive to Jersey next week. Her company suspended travel and she's pissed. Both of our livelihoods depend on being able to and others being able/willing to travel freely. Actually the entire economy depends on it. Keep your fears to yourself... for 2 more weeks is all I ask.

The University of Washington as well as a small university in New York just suspended classes with more to follow. The first vendor at a professional sporting event in Seattle was found to have the virus.

OK, I'm not going to take the time to look up facts and figures or post any good links to back this up. The world is WAY overdue for a large-scale pandemic that thins out the population. The Coronavirus may or may not be the cause of the next one.
I am so-to-be 62 years old and have suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis for over twenty years. I keep the disease at bay by taking biologics that lower my immune system. They make me susceptible to any kind of infection or virus, and the common cold usually turns into the need for antibiotics and/or steroids for me. Otherwise, I'm pretty healthy in spite of being very out-of-shape at the moment.
That being said, I am a college wrestling fanatic. I have traveled all over the country in every imaginable kind of dangerous storm, and other less-than-ideal scenarios to watch wrestling, so some virus that might pose a danger to me is not going to stop me. Right now it is much less prevalent than the flu, so unless that changes drastically in the next ten days, I'm going. Of course, if I develop symptoms, I will spare the risk to the rest of you, but until then, just try to keep me away, especially with the Hawkeyes being the frontrunners. I'm not looking forward to the venue (as stated on several other threads) but this is my favorite event of the year, and I need it to keep my sanity. Besides, the stadium will likely be safer than a small arena (like the RAC) for spread of the disease. I hope you all make the decision that is best for you, and I hope to see some of you in the Twin Cities.

The h1n1 swine flu of 2009 infected 60 million americans and killed 12,000. Data points to mull over. The world continued on is my recollection and even those numbers dont touch each years flu totals. Heck, most people dont even get flu shots even though 30-50k per year will die from the 'flu'.

First case confirmed in Ramsey county (St Paul). Patient was on a cruise.

Sat through a 2 hour meeting on the from the CDC and another call with the leading epidemiologists in the word. (Dr Bill Rutala for those who like to google).

it is the flu. It is a new envelope strain but is not considered deadly to the general public. People over 60 and immune compromised people are the at risk group they are looking at.

the number and deaths in US as a result of the virus are over estimated to a small degree and in both DC and California, they happens in specific clusters. There are some puzzling things about it however, the CDC is NOT recommending any addition precautions than any other flu season for this. It is not difficult to treat or to do environmental disinfection. Also, mask don’t work.

spread is Mucosal within a 6 foot radius. It is NOT airborne.

the hype is media and politically driven. Reasonable and normal precautions will protect. The only reason to cancel events is to calm public concern over something.

he stated clearly, never good to have a virus however this is not in the top 10 most dangerous viruses out there.

9,000 people have died this year from standard flu. 2020. I am not saying don’t be mindful but the hype does not match the danger.

I have provided my Hawk family what I heard. I will not provide sources beyond what I already have, don’t want to debate. You all know the media is bullshit and how you choose to move forward is on you.

go to the big 10. Go to nationals. If you feel sick, stay home. Otherwise, GO FRICKEN HAWKS.

No fire involved in this purification? Are you sure?:D

I bought plane tickets and seats as well as VRBO for a friend with leukemia. He was a NJCC national champ and also coached our high school team some years back. With his treatments, his immune system is non existent. Dr. Says no go. I feel bad him. I will likely be selling his ticket and seeing how the airline feels about a refund.

The latest I heard is that it was a presumptive case. It has yet to be confirmed by the CDC as of 2 hours ago (6:15 pm). But that appears to be almost a formality at this point.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has confirmed Minnesota’s first presumptive case of novel coronavirus, COVID-19, health officials announced today.

The case is an older adult resident of Ramsey County who recently traveled on a cruise ship with a known COVID-19 case. The patient began to develop symptoms on Feb. 25 and sought health care yesterday. Samples were collected from the person and sent to the MDH Public Health Laboratory for testing today. The test was found positive earlier today. MDH is awaiting confirmatory testing from CDC, but health officials consider the presumptive results actionable.

Still going to Minneapolis.

May yell at anyone who coughs near me...especially if they don't cough into their elbow.
Guess that is why I'm not attending the NCCAs in Minneapolis (lots of family lives there) the running nose and a lot of coughing. Go Hawks!!!
