Cory Clark to miss SDSU

Yup. And it isn't just that he is small. Also, high school accolades don't mean dick.
Maybe you should call Brands and tell him to quit recruiting kids with "High School Accolades" then. Tell him we're going with the new "Spooner Method", where you just throw darts at a board.

In Laux's case he signed with Wisconsin originally anyway, so the Hometown interest in a 103 lb 1st Team All-American as a Junior was obviously not very much. Wonder if it could have been his size? Nah, he just wasn't any good. LOL!

Somehow he managed to go 23-1 and win 5 tournaments in his 1st year in Iowa City. I'd say he had to have some ability to pull that off while most likely weighing 125 lbs soaking wet and fully clothed. There's a long list of former Hawkeyes wrestling a similar kind of schedule that didn't go 23-1 in their 1st year in the room.

So he certainly had some ability before he went in and out of the room for whatever reason and only wrestled 6 times in the last 2 years.

Aside from the fact he got teched by the very guy that was going to beat our 2 Time NCAA Finalist, sounds like it went par for the course for an undersized backup.

He didn't look that small to me. He looks a lot bigger than he did a couple years ago. If he is such a small 133, why didn't he go 57kg in freestyle ? He actually beat some decent 133's at universities. He has recently had reasonably close matches with Clark and Richards (4-1 and 8-2). He is a solid wrestler but does not seem like someone who is going to beat the top guys.

Think he is a solid wrestler...think it is tough to get in that "I'm the guy" mode.

I think Gross just might be that good.
Ive heard on here since he left he'd be our 3rd string 141 lber. At best a coin flip for the starting spot. I've never really bought it though. I'm sure someone is about to bring up a loss to Turk or some close matches he had during his redshirt year, but his productivity at SDSU has been impressive.

Gross made a leap last year after Midlands. He best some decent guys in folk and free and gained a lot of confidence...which has translated into aggression. There was a question in whether he could keep that with he cut to 133...looks like he can. Keep in mind that Laux wrestled Mr Planetary from Illinois this year...he lost 8-2. Zane was definitely the better wrestler but it was not the domination we saw at SDSU. If no Clark...I'm calling it: Gross is going to win it.

BTW, the only reason I picked Gross over Clark is because Cory has matches early in the year against good competition where he lapses mentally. I thought this would be one.

gross is 1-1 with gulibon and 1-1 with Meredith other than that I don't see anything that impressive.

Lol. Brands will be the very first guy to tell you that once you get on the D1 mat your high school accolades don't mean anything. That was a terrible leap in logic.

I don't think Laux is that small anymore. He's bigger than when he filled in at 133 two years ago. He's just not likely a guy who will do damage for us.

No shit Sherlock. So your "logic" is to recruit 25 guys without "High School Accolades"? Great plan. Cael approves.

Regardless of Laux's current physical stature, who is more likely to be that guy "who will do damage for us" if Gilman or Clark go down? Yep. It sure appears to be Laux, for better or worse.

You have somehow twisted this into a recruiting discussion which it most certainly isn't. Laux is 5 years removed from high school. What he did there earns him no wins or breaks today.

I'm OK with Laux as a backup, FWIW. I just don't think he's a high quality D-1 wrestler and his results reflect it. Most schools don't have superstars sitting on the bench.

Gross came on well at 141 last year and looks very good at 133. He is a year older and a long and strong 133 pounder. Clark or anyone else will need to bring their good stuff to win IMO.

I "twisted" it into a recruiting discussion because someone tried to tell me that High School Accolades don't matter, when I merely mentioned that Phillip Laux was a 1st Team All-American for a reason (i.e. - he's no chump).

If High School Accolades "don't matter", then why are Coaches falling all over themselves trying to get those with the Most High School Accolades? They do matter, they have always mattered and they will continue to matter long after you're dead.

Clark has a shoulder separation and will be back this year.
This makes me slightly less worried, separations suck, but they're not as bad as a torn labrum or rotator cuff, depending on the severity of the separation of course.

But still, I've had a separated shoulder in very early December and was back on the mat by mid to late January at 100%. Every situation is obviously different, but I'm optimistic that Clark can be back and contending for a title.

If that's the case, it will make the Marinelli decision really difficult. Will they wait and see if Clark is going to be 100% before they decide to pull the shirt off the Bull?

I think we've gotta have faith Clark will be back, and evaluate Marinelli on a separate basis. That basis being: whether he can score legit points at NCAAS this year. My gut opinion says yes, but I think we'll know for sure after Midlands. After IMAR, Lewis, Massa, Jordan it's quite close. I think Marinelli can battle with Joseph, Rogers, Valencia, Cottrell, Walsh, Minotti and company for the 5-8 slots on the podium.

How many wins has John Meeks' 4 state championships earned him in college?

The more I think about this, the more I think Clark's injury has NOTHING to do with Marinelli. He's going to have next season to redshirt anyway, so let's let him wrestle this year!

Disagree. If Clark was out for the year and it was possible to get a medical redshirt it could change a lot. I.e Shirts on Clark and Marinelli this year, Lee and Warner wrestling as true freshman next year etc.

That's a nice thought in theory but there is absolutely 0% chance Clark gets a medical RS from how I understand the rules.

Can you clarify for me? I found the below information. It seems as though he could be granted a "medical hardship waiver" per the below.

  • The student-athlete must suffer the injury during one of their four seasons of college competition or during the senior year of high school.
  • The injury must be incapacitating. That means it must be a season-ending injury.
  • The injury must occur prior to the start of the second half of the season.
  • The student-athlete must not have competed in more than 30% of the season or three contests, whichever is greater.

This applies to individuals who have not yet used their redshirt.

What spooner said, For someone who has already used their redshirt (i.e. Clark), he would have to miss significant time across two seasons and not compete in the post season for either of the 2 seasons I believe, or something along those lines.

Trivia-What Iowa hs wrestler beat the tar out of Sanderson in high school?
In fairness to Cael, David Kjeldgaard beat the tar out of a lot of people in high school and Fargo. ;)

From an Intermat Article about the 20 best High Schoolers of the last 20 years (written in 2005 by Justin Kerr.

(Disclaimer: That list was composed of guys with "High School Accolades", so take it with a grain of salt..................and if I can be fair to Cael, I can be fair to Spooner, only 15 of the 20 won at least 1 NCAA Title)

11. David Kjeldgaard (Iowa)

The winner of the inaugural Dave Schultz award for high school excellence in 1996 was the kid from Iowa with the funny name. There was nothing funny about his accomplishments, however -- as Kjeldgaard finished 173-4 en route to winning three Iowa state titles, and much more impressively, a still-unsurpassed (although it has been tied) record of six Junior Nationals titles. A true scholar-athlete, Kjeldgaard graduated valedictorian of his class with a 4.0 GPA.

Kjeldgaard's collegiate career was solid but unspectacular due to being slowed by a variety of severe knee injuries. However, to assess just how good he was in high school, it is perhaps useful to look at who he beat to win his Junior Nationals crowns in freestyle. His junior year, he defeated TJ Williams, who would go on to win two NCAA titles while posting a record of 98-1 at the University of Iowa. His senior year, he defeated future NCAA champ and four-time top-three finisher Joe Heskett just to reach the finals -- where he triumphed over a kid from Utah by the name of Cael Sanderson.

Funny name, huh? Scandinavians unite against this guy!

But that was in freestyle so did it really happen?

But that was in freestyle so did it really happen?
It did happen, but nobody cared...................... ;)

I think the emphasis in the article was on his 3 Folkstyle Titles in Iowa, as it clearly should have been. (one of those Titles was over a lad from my Hometown, who had some success post High School wrestling for Army I believe, something called Geiko, Greco or something of that nature.................)

That answer is 0. And his only college loss was to someone who (I believe) didn't win a state title in Iowa.
Correct, Paul Jenn was a great wrestler at Britt, but did not get a title,, runner up his senior year. He eventually made his way to Iowa. He beat red shirt Cael 6-4 at the UNI open. Paul was doing great things with his life and would have been great for the kids of Mason City.
