A Council Bluffs man is in custody after he allegedly tried to ram a police cruiser during a low-speed chase while driving a stolen forklift.

Michael L. Burgess, 39, was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident near 16th Avenue and High Street, according to the Council Bluffs Police Department. He was driving a forklift.

An officer spotted Burgess at Seventh Avenue and South 10th Street, and as the officer approached the suspect allegedly attempted to ram the police cruiser, according to police.

The officer avoiding being hit and attempted to pull Burgess over, who allegedly tried to strike the cruiser a second time near 10th Street and Fifth Avenue, police said.

Officers surrounded Burgess at 12th Street and Fifth Avenue and took him into custody without further incident. Police later found the forklift had been stolen from Midwest Walnut, 1914 Tostevin St.
