Critical getting CJF healthy

I like CJ's game but at the end of the day he is averaging 9ppg. Ulis and Perkins, splitting his minutes, will eclipse that as well as do things that CJ, Connor and Jbo don't do well. No sense in aggravating his injury given Fran has two highly touted recruits sitting on the bench who have shown they can contribute.

Putting CJ in the same category as JBO and Connor is silly.

Yeah he averages 9 points because he just doesn't get shot opportunities beung the 4th option but he's the best shooter in the conference and can get his own shot when he needs to. The other two can't.

His defense is significantly better too.

Neither Ulis or Perkins is an upgrade from CJ, where they likely would be an upgrade in most ways over JBO and Connor.

This is what makes me laugh about people wanting to play JT or any of the freshman and sitting jbo. Yes your defense gets better. But your offense gets significantly worse.

I don't want to knock Ulis or Perkins, who will be very good for the next few years, but I am curious what you think CJ's deficiencies are. I believe he is the most complete guard on the team. He is very good outside shooter. He can take the ball into the lane and score. He is a very good passer. He is a plus defender. He has a very high BB IQ. He makes shots and plays at crunch time. All these things allow him to make the rest of the guys on the floor better, and do what is missing, when it is needed.

Bad take

For Jordan to be effective, he needs to be able to shoot and make a high volume of shots. 2/5 from 3 (40%) is really good, but is it worth sacrificing perimeter defense every time down the court for?

I’m not knocking Bohannon; I’m proposing (as I did before the season) that he comes off the bench. If he’s playing alongside Keegan, Nunge, Connor, and Pat (edit: not necessarily all at the same time), then a) he should be able to fire off a lot more shots as he is a primary offensive threat on the floor, whereas he has to share a lot of possessions with Garza/Wieskamp as a starter, and b) we improve our perimeter defense with Toussaint/Ulis on the floor, and on offense, get somebody who can be disruptive in the lane and get defenses out of position, opening up more looks for Garza, Fredrick, and Wieskamp

There doesn’t even need to be a substantial drop (if any) in minutes for Jordan, and of course we still want his shooting down the stretch, but I think he could be a lot more valuable leading the backups where he can hunt shots a bit more than being option 3 or 4 in the starting unit

Separately, CJ Fredrick is a stud, and he should not see any reduction in minutes

I disagree. Your proposed 2nd lineup would be an awful shooting team, especially from outside besides jbo. He would get even more attention as nobody else would have to be guarded beyond 15 ft. This team is what it is, when the best offensive players are out there the defense lacks, when better defense is on the floor the offense lacks.

I’d like to see joe play pg with Jbo at the 2 a lot more.

Iowa’s lineups are generally pretty fluid. Fran has also been staggering substitutions so Pat is first off the bench, then Nunge, then Keegan, who pushes Nunge over to the 5 when Garza subs out. Toussaint comes in afterwards, and after a couple of minutes, Fredrick/Wieskamp are ready to come back in, with Garza shortly after.

That second lineup I posted isn’t typically on the floor for more than a couple of minutes together. I’m just saying that playing Bohannon more minutes with some of those non-starters would be a good way to get him some more shots. I would also take Bohannon against most other teams’ backups in a heartbeat

And I want to see Jordan play more off guard as well, but apparently that isn’t going to happen

All this bitching and moaning about a guy leading many categories over his 5 years at Iowa. Let's just see in four more years where these other three young men stand. By then you guys will be wanting a new reserve playing ahead of all of them. Most of you are just trolls looking for attention on the Iowa board...
This team is in the top 10 in the nation but you're still posting stupid things just to try and get attention because your mom is busy;)

I see a lot of quality discussion and little bitching or moaning in this thread by a bunch of posters who have all been here at least a year and half longer than you. Feel free to contribute instead of projecting

Last I heard is that he practiced yesterday. To what degree, I don't know. Probably 50/50 with playing tonight.

I might be in the minority but I would rather get him fully healthy before we put him back in. This is a team that is built for a run in the postseason, but that won't happen without him.

Fran has said that they need CJ for the long run and do not want to rush him back too soon, so that should be the plan. I hope that Iowa does not need him tonight against a MSU team that is struggling, but I am always concerned about MSU.

MSU is like OSU in FB for me. Have seen the Hawks get rolled by them so many times that it is impossible for me to count this as a W until the clock hits zero

They haven't been very forthcoming about CJ's problem other than describing it as "lower leg", which would I take to be an indication that it's not foot and not ankle....

Not necessarily disagreeing with you, but to be fair, Bohannon was inserted into the starting line up, replacing Christian Williams, in the 7th game of his freshman season and has been pretty much getting starter's minutes ever since. Ulis and Perkins, as good as they may be, won't have that advantage unless they opt for the extra year.
