According to the Chicago Tribune, the Big Ten bowl game at Wrigley Field is off. The deal fell through when the Cubs demanded the third or fourth pick of teams, and Big Ten teams said no thanks; we'd rather have a warm-weather destination.

So common sense prevails. Ain't that amazin'!

The Cubs say they don't want to host "just another bowl game." They want a major matchup or none at all. So, for now at least, it's none at all.

I love their rationale and spin...rather than just saying, yeah, what were we thinking. Football bowl in a baseball stadium is a bad idea.

The game they played there a few years ago was a joke. They only had one working endzone. Had to flip the field every possession change.

That's true, but after the latest renovation a section of seats is now removable specifically to accommodate a safe football field. NW will still play a regular season game at Wrigley in November whenever that works out--starting in 2019 or 2020, I think. And when they do, both end zones will be used. :)

BTW: I don't think it's Cubs' spin at all. They said all along they wanted a top-tier Big Ten team, but now that they know that's not gonna happen, they've made it clear they were serious and won't settle just to have a game. That makes sense to me, although I agree that outdoor bowl games in northern baseball facilities are not exactly a great idea.

But they let Northwestern play there.

Why don’t they pursue a regular season non-conference game if they want a game there so bad. Make the Cubs do a circus trip similar to the Bulls so they have time to prep the stadium before and after.

That is complete spin from the Cubs. The real truth is it was very obvious that nobody wanted to play there and it would have been, at minimum, a minor disaster.
I am sure if there was adequate money involved and realistic expectations, this could have got done.

I wonder if the Big Ten would have told the bowl to screw off if the bowl payout was greater than Outback for example. The conference does not like to leave money on the table, do they?

In this case it was a simple case of go big or go home. The Cubs wanted a Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa, Michigan State or nobody. When the conference said no to sending one of those top teams to Wrigley in December, the Cubs said no thanks. No conspiracy. That's all there is to it.
