Several good candidates this year but Ferentz exceeded expectations far more than any of the others and did more with less.

I'm obviously biased but not sure that going 10-4, 11-2, 11-2, 10-3 and then having a 13-0 season is that surprising. I think negative media bias about Iowa's record may have dogged Ferentz in the voting.

Its hard to argue with Dabo...I don't think anyone expected Clemson to run the table and be the #1 seed in the CFP. He is deserving so really no argument or complaints from me. Ferentz had a great year and is deserving too, but again Clemson exceeded expectations too.

This is BS!! Not even close. Iowa teaches discipline, team & mostly "real" pro style, fundamentals, scheming football. These other clowns r all taking their much better athletes & plugging them into their same ol simple, "everybody's doin it" because there's less coaching involved & way less thinking, offenses. Ferentz & Co develop kids into men & responsible pro prospects & coaches.
There's no comparison who has a tougher challenge as a coach.
That's your elitest media could care less about mid west "corn fed" Iowa.

Unfortunately, you fail to look at this situation objectively, which isn't a surprise since you are an Iowa fan(I am too, but I'm trying to take emotion and bias out of it). Yes it is close, and the fact Dabo was awarded COY by this outlet isn't surprising nor is it a slight to KF. You act like KF is the only coach in the US that develops kids into men and develops pro prospects. The award criteria isn't who has a tougher challenge as a coach each year, its based on how the team does, and Clemson ran the table and has been ranked #1 for weeks and is the #1 seed in the CFP...hard to argue with that.

I feel the same way. When you have two that are very deserving, you go with the one that's undefeated or has the better record.

It's coach of the year, not most surprising or best turnaround. Sometimes the coach of the year is the guy who wins all his game even with a good team. I have no problems with Dabo winning.

Why would you complain about the coach of the undefeated and #1 team in the country winning that award? Kirk certainly had a very strong case for it and I would guess will win another coach of the year honor like the AP vote like he did in 2002.

....but that's only because it's not as fun if you dont.......................and his name is Dabo. Can't be taken seriously by default. Blame the south for naming their children so poorly.

I friggin hate Dabo. However, by the numbers, they are the third youngest team in FBS, they have played 28 freshmen, and are #1 and the only unbeaten team.

My only argument is that 10 months ago, if you polled the fanbase my completely unscientific guess is that roughly half the fan base would prefer to see Ferentz fired, even if they weren't actively calling for it. The record and quality of play were certainly a factor, but so were many coaching decisions on the field.

Ferentz's job of coaching this year goes far beyond what he did from August to December. He deserves credit for what he did from January to August as well.

It's not like Dabo doesn't deserve it, I just feel that Kirk had to do more, and had a lot more at risk, to get his team where they ended up compared to what anybody else in the running had.

I also don't think that most improved team/record should be the litmus test for coach of the year either. Dabo is well deserving.

For some reason most improved record seems to be the traditional litmus test for this just like being a top QB, RB or WR is the litmus test for the Heisman.

If we beat MSU, Kirk gets it. No doubt, this Iowa team exceeded expectations much more than Clemson or any other team out there.

If we would've won the damn BTCG then Kirk would've claimed the honor hands down.

Yep. Kirk was one goal line stand from Home Depot COY. Hard to argue against Swinney, but Kirk was just as deserving, IMO. I don't have a big problem with it -- you can't do any better than Swinney's program has this year, and as noted above, they're a relatively young team. Congrats to him. Doesn't take anything away from the masterful job of coaching Kirk and his staff have done this year.

Let's just bring back Ott and King and run the table next year. Kirk will be a slam dunk in 2016.

Yeah, but in life consistency gets rewarded. The last 5 yrs Dabo is on fire and only one of those years is Kirk on fire. The argument that someone who consistently has double digit wins is less deserving that someone who does it sporadically really doesn't hold up using objective logic.

To put it bluntly, if Kirk had Dabos record (13-0) would you expect the award to go to someone who was 12-1 right now? You also have to factor in the "Academy Award" paradigm. Kirk already has a shelf full of awards. Voters in every field like to recognize those whose shelf may not be as full.

The ESpin mouthpieces really loved some Dabo, this year.
He did go undefeated................but, I would still vote for

CAPTAIN KIRK

Actually the mouthpieces cut Dabo off because of his praise for the lord in his post game speeches. That said Kirk did more with less and had an equal regular season record in the best conference in college football. #micdrop

I'm not sure that surprising has anything to do with this award. It's who was the best coach over the last year. Dabo is undefeated and has put his team in a the playoff with a shot at the national championship.

Quite frankly, that 5 year stretch at a college that isn't one of the main, traditional powerhouses is pretty amazing. I suppose it's just like any award were many are deserving but there can only be one winner.

His name is William Christopher Swinney. Dabo was a nickname that came about because his brother couldn't pronounce "That boy" when they were young. It came out as Dabo and just stuck.

Also replaced 9 starters off the #1 defense in the country and Replaced ALL 5 starters on the O line.

Very deserving. Dabo did a great job this season and shouldn't be punished for being successful in recent seasons.

This is truth. But on top of that, KF went from most Iowa fans wanting him fired, to them absolutely lovin him. It's hard to do a better 180 degree turn with 2 significant figures, but he pulled off a 180.0000 turn (possibly more significant figures). Science.

That's why KF shoulda won.

Playing ACC offenses will help you get the #1 defensive ranking in the country.

Look I didnt come here to pick a fight. I was pulling for you guys to win so two non "blue blood" programs could play for all the marbles. Clemson defense was no doubt the best in the land. They were # 1 in almost every since stat they measure in college football. You dont get that by just playing in a "bad conference". As for your comment.

Clemson opponents were 89-65 combined
Iowa opponents were 68-70 combined.

Phil Steele's "Power Poll" - which is his preseason estimate of overall roster strength - had Iowa at #57 this year.

Now - while that was obviously significantly low - I don't see how this doesn't represent the best coaching job in the country.

Look at this way. Outside of the Hawkeye fanbase, who agrees with you? I would say objective fans appreciate Kirk's title as Dean of B1G coaches. And he gets respect for earning that title. But if you visit any number of sites which allowed fans to vote for COTY, it was Swinney who won the cumulative voting. Obviously on HR it makes sense to echo the conformist choice.

I get it (and I now live far outside of the Midwest in the middle of Pac 12 country) ... but I can tell you anecdotally that a number of completely non-Iowa fans I know out here thought that this was Kirk's award to lose (again, completely anecdotal).

Part of it may also be how you define the award ... in my mind, it's who got the most of his talent base (while having a nationally relevant season). The "Iowa lacks 4-5 star recruits theme" has been a national narrative, which makes it more surprising to me that Kirk didn't get more play for the national award.

You only have 13 carriage returns/line feeds between the last two lines. If you had more, I would have taken you seriously.
