Dale Jones

As of a couple days ago, his knee swelled up so I assume he was held out for injury.

It's a bad thing for Jones but this year's team has plenty of players to plug up any missing bodies, esp when Daily doesn't want to redshirt and Fran is hesitant not to redshirt him as well. Fran said he will play Daily more tomorrow. IA is loaded with players, just play the hot players, only one player who has trouble getting started is Brady. He'll come around too.

Just my opinion but the biggest mistake Fran could make this year is trying to force 12 or 13 guys into a solid 9/10 man rotation. You just can't get any rhythm substituting players every couple of minutes -- I know this because I used to coach middle school basketball. Seriously, though, at least 3 maybe 4 scholarship players are going to have to play very limited roles this year. If Dailey is one of those players (IMO he is) it would be much better for him to take the redshirt and get stronger.

I understand what your saying about playing time, and Daily specifically. I've just never been a fan of redshirting kids in basketball. I can see it, to some degree in football from a strength perspective, but thats not as important, especially for a guard in bball. The season is much longer in basketball, and injuries happen. I'm also not sure that a lot of these kids want to stay in college for 5 years. The biggest thing about redshirting to me is, you should always try to recruit better talent over the current players. Fran seems to be on a roll currently, and we want the open scholorships available for future players. We don't want a situation every year like we have in 2017, where we're waiting to clear some room for guys already committed and signed,

If a kid has a high ceiling and is buried on the depth chart, I think reshirting makes sense. I think moss is a perfect example and Dailey seems to fit that description as well. Otherwise, I agree red shirting isn't ideal, especially in Iowa's case as Fran seems to be getting higher caliber players each year.

I would rather see an agreed Redshirt of 2 guys this year with potential than burn all their Freshman elgibility and have them transfer next year.

Iowa State always seems to have 1-2 players in the pipeline getting stronger and better by sitting out one year.

Unless you are the Kentucky's of the world, this approach makes great sense to me.

You can always take off the redshirt if the player is needed. If a couple guards go down at midseason, put him where he is needed.

I'm also not sure that a lot of these kids want to stay in college for 5 years.

If I was coach, I would never force a player to take a redshirt year. I would, however, have a discussion with the player and make it clear why a redshirt season might be beneficial. That discussion would necessarily include the anticipated lack of playing time. If the player was still opposed, you honor his decision.

I get that, but I think its a tough decision for the kid. He comes in expecting to contribute, because you said you wanted him there when you recruit him. Then the coach says your not going to play this year, so you should redshirt. Your there at the home games in a suit, but you don't feel like part of the team. It takes a real effort by the coaches to keep these kids engaged. I know its not possible to play everyone. I still think I would let the competition decide. If Dailey is better than Brady or Moss, I'd play him now, and let the chips fall where they will.

I've got a foot in each camp on the redshirt thing.

One the one hand, Baer, Acie Earl, I'm not gonna try to think hard and figure them all out.

One the other hand, who was that guy that redshirted and left for lack of playing time later anyway? You know....Meyer. Didn't Courtney Scott redshirt?

Coaches call, and there's a reason Daily won't redshirt. He won't redshirt. At least I think that is what Mac said during the game, that no one had come to McCaffery even interested in the notion.

OK, Moss and Dailey have both played in official games now, can they still be Red-shirted? What is the rule there on any accrued playing time?
SIAP.

Moss already used his redshirt last year and unless it is for injury I don't think Dailey could use one once he has stepped on the court

Yes per Fran he was held out because of the swelling. I don't know but it seems Dale's health is on going. :(

I did not hear that one. Bummer. Any news on that swelling(recovery time, limited movement, etc)? He was just starting to get back into the swing of things. This could really hamper that... Participating in warm-ups is a good sign I suppose. But this could make his full return this season a difficult one.

when it comes to Jones ... who was struggling defensively previously...its even more difficult trying to improve while doing so on two bad knees. Its not easy for Jones (physically) in Fran's get up & down the floor ... along with some pressure on the opponent bringing the ball up...

I don't see him playing significant minutes...at least over Cook, Wagner, Uhl & Pemsl.
and I'd prefer to see Moss/Dailey get those minutes.

Marcellus Sommerville redshirted for Alford, then transferred to Bradley after his RS season.

I believe it's the same one bad knee

If jones is healthy he starts over Uhl better shooter and rebounder Imo

Due to the 5th year transfer rules, I'd never redshirt anybody. You stand the chance of putting 4 years into a guy to have him transfer when he should be most productive.

I'm not a fan of redshirting at this level (bubble and above).

"Sorry, son, you're not good enough to even sub; but that's on me for recruiting you, so stay a whole year longer."
