Dan Dakich makes his living as a talk radio host in
Indianapolis. To keep the ratings high on his sports
show, he must come up with the occasional scoop.
He is too busy to fact check most of the information
that he spit balls over the air waves. He prides himself
as a link to Bobby Knight and the glory days of Hoosier
basketball.

Bottom Line: He did not know anything about Alford's
future as a coach at UCLA or Indiana

He'd fit in well with some of the people on here a week ago talking about how Gonzaga was a joke, hadn't played anyone tough, and would lose in the 1st or 2nd Round.

Since we're on the subject of people who don't know their ass from a hole in ground. ;)

Dan Dakich is entertaining to listen to, knows a lot more about hoops, strategies etc. than most on air pundits. Sometimes you miss on your scoops. I remember Ron Gonder WMT Cedar Rapids breaking into programming with the announcement in 1983 that Gene Keady would be the new Iowa basketball coach. Imagine what that would have been like.

While I agree that Gonzaga was undervalued, they haven't exactly had to get through a muderer's row to get to the final four. They've beaten some good teams, but the field really opened up for them. They got the benefit of a 1 seed mainly due to dominating a really poor conference, although I will concede they beat some pretty good (but not great) teams in the non-conference. In the NCAA tourney, they beat SD State (a 16 seed), a decent NW team, a WVU team that can't score and relies on a mugging defense, and then beat a hot Xavier team (but not a team that was really great this year).

Gonzaga has shown over the past number of years that they are often overvalued coming into the tournament and their tourney performances outside of this year have borne this out.

The frustrating part about Dakich is that he does have a great basketball mind. He is a very educated man in that regard. Where my frustration lies is he continually calls coaches out while hinting at "if this was my team" BS. His coaching career was a joke and he just has no room to do this. He also makes bogus claims and will say about anything for attention. This is how he makes his money so can't blame him THAT much but I would be ashamed if I had to take shots at a fan base or coaches in order to have relevance. I think he could be extremely successful if he could get over his pride.

I will give DD props on his thoughts when Iowa hired Lick, I was living in Indy at the time and DD questioned the hire, his main point was that Todd didn't have AAU connections for recruiting.

And then next thing we know his son is logging significant minutes at PG for us. I can only imagine where our program could be right now if we could have skipped the Lickliter era.

Facts, schmacts.
Get with the times man. You don't have to know anything in the old-fashioned sense of having actual information. All it takes is "knowing" something, meaning you'll throw some s^!t out there into cyberspace and over the airwaves and see what happens.
dakich is no worse than a lot of the others that do the same thing.

has gonzaga played anybody tough in the tournament either?

Only decent team they played was west virgina and they barely got by there didn't have to play either of the top 2 seeds

Not the point. The point was people were saying Gonzaga was garbage and would get upset right away.

That hasn't happened. They've taken care of business. In truth, with so much parity in college basketball, how much did seeding really matter this year?

Or the guys that said Hayden was off to USC and it was a done deal? 1986ish or so.

While I wasn't one of those people they did have facts and history on their side.....

Dakich was on ESPN about a week ago, almost guaranteeing Alford to IU.

He said that Indiana wanted an Indiana guy.
Don't remember if Archie M is an Indiana guy, or if he ever play BB, for that matter.

GO HAWKS :)
I'm glad Dakich was wrong, once again............he usually is wrong.

Miller played point guard at NC State. His father was a legendary high school coach.

Little Lick only played 175 minutes all season in only 21 games. Probably 170 of those were after Tucker went away. It all depends on the meaning of significant?

Dakich has a lot of air time to fill. I don't think he's just floating rumors any more than any other "journalist". Sometimes a guy gets bad information or circumstances change faster than his information stream.

I sure liked it when Dakich said Cook and Bohannon are future all B1G players.

So DD only blows selective hot air? :)

On Alford, my speculation is Indiana wanted him this time, but Steve's ego said "nah" at the last minute plus the supposed talent he has coming in. That's why Miller was hired as sort of a fall back. I believe Dakich believed Stevie boy was the one.

That was an easy call. But, Lick had a lot more going against him than lack of AAU connections.

Alford was not offered and he was not a serious candidate.
