Davenport’s finest

The Village of East Davenport back
in the 1950's and 1960's was filled
with bars and taverns on East 11 St.
and also Mound St. However, beer
was the beverage of choice.

In the golden years of fast-pitch
men's softball teams in Davenport,
most of them were sponsored by
local taverns.

Power's Tap, Kickapoo Tavern,
Crimmy's Tavern, Fred's Tap,
Happy Corner, just to name a
few in the 1960's.

I slammed down a whole bottle of paramount rum back in ‘93. Nearly died but they got me breathing again. I didn’t drink for at least two weeks after that.

Don't keep us in suspense, Torbee.
What did those initials on your
uncle's uniform stand for?

I remember Paramount rum. Basically nail polish remover. Admiral Nelsons was really popular as the Captain substitute when I was in school and you were really hard up if you stooped down to Paramount. It was easier to drink Hawkeye mixed with anything than a Paramount and coke after your first Paramount hangover. That sticks with you.

One of the teams in the Men's
Fast-Pitch Softball League was
Green's Paint. They came to the
games in a black funeral hearse
with all the players in it.

After the game they would get back
in the hearse and drive to Friendly
Tavern. There they would enjoy some
burgers and beer.
