I know there are some people that think David Johnson was never good enough to be a Hawkeye ......but Holy Cow ....did you see that run. I would have loved to see him in the black and gold......yeah..yeah ...he would have never seen the field. Just not good enough ...ha!

Things worked out the way they were supposed to for Johnson, and possibly for Iowa too. Yes weisman was never a running back and we went through a rough spell as a result but I feel like after watching four backs play this year that our coaching staff learned from it.

Yes only Iowa missed on him looking at all his offers. If Iowa did sign him you and others would have bitched about offering a MAC / FCS level recruit. I bet you hated the Hawks success this year didn't you?

Hate the Hawkeye success ....you my friend are "wrong again"! Always been a hawk fan ..in fact I will be making the trip to the Rose Bowl ...how about you? Just been a DJ fan from High school! I do agree with your point about bitching about offering a MAC / FCS level recruit ....obviously I wouldn't have complained but I know some would have!

I bet if Johnson came to Iowa, one of two things would've happened.....

Weisman never would've been thrust into the roll of RB after the ISU loss in 2012 which is what happened because of injuries,

Or and if we're being totally honest here,

AIRBHG.......

Yes I will be at the rose bowl - actually taking my son to a FB camp on the 28th in CA and then we will head to the Rose Bowl - works out great. Thanks for asking.

there is not a single Iowa fan that thought DJ wouldn't be a stud for Iowa after his first couple years at UNI.

UNI started him out a linebacker.

This UNI was not sold on him as a RB. He was very lazy at times and even some times was very disrespectful to the Clinton Coaches during games. He had an attitude problem and I am guessing that's why some programs didn't come calling. I mean there would be plays where he didn't get the ball, he would just stand there. Wouldn't carry out a fake or anything.

He figured it out at UNI and became one heck of a player and gentlemen. Watching him at UNI was a thing of beauty, he was able to catch the ball out of the backfield and also make the powerful run between the tackles. I knew after his Junior year he was destined to be a good one in the NFL. He's got size and speed.

I am glad the Arizona coach took a chance on a rookie. He was quoted earlier in the year as saying, he does not like to play rookies. Good move coach.

You have to wonder here is he is a product of the route he took. He obviously has the physical tools, but anybody around that level of football knows that physical tools have only a portion of what it takes to be successful. If he gets a high offer, does he develop the attitude he has now, not sure. If he starts at running back at UNI, does he just slump around for more carries. This young man is a success story and should only be thought of as a success story. He grew up and he is currently using the physical tools he has, and he developed those tools with a probable chip on his shoulder for getting passed for scholarships and also being put at linebacker. The path we get to is most certainly shaped by the experiences we are thrust into.

Wasn't Johnson's class the one where we had Gordon until right before signing? Plus we had McCall and Canzeri.

What's your source? Or are you just repeating everything you read?

I was told by a coach from Clinton that he had issues. Told me straight to my face at one of Clinton's games that the kid was a gamble. UNI was one of the last schools to offer the kid. Illinois State was the only other one. I mean for a kid who took a Clinton team (who barely won a game) to get them to 11-0 and in the state quarterfinals, you would of thought more schools would of been in on him. Obviously something was holding them back.

I remember watching his games at Clinton and he would get ball it was like he wasn't even running that hard, but he would pull away from people. He was as smooth as they come, but I also saw him at times just stand there on the field when he didn't get the ball (randy moss trick). I mean there would be times the team would have to wait for him to get set, and then they could run the play.

He had an attitude in high school and the UNI coaches must of fixed that. I never saw it once at any of his games at UNI.

This is just proof that you really cant believe a lot of thing you read on these boards! Deporthawk8 .....this is some of the craziest stuff I've every heard. And the biggest problem with this is there are people that will read that and repeat it ...this is how you got your info ...someone else talking crap and you repeating it! And mstp .....really ...common knowledge! Wow that all news to anyone that knows anything about him! David is the quietist, and the most modest guy you would ever meet! And as far as him being like "Randy Moss" you have to admit....Randy Moss didn't play offence defense and special teams! The guy was always on the field ...yep ...he took plays off....he was human! A fiend always told me ....don't try to match wits with a half wit....I feel that's what I'm trying to do here!

Canzeri was added at the last second, so you can't really count him. The staff could have given that scholarship to Johnson at the 11th hour just as easily.

If Iowa doesn't recruit him or some other power 5 school also passes, there is always a character issue. It didn't show up at UNI or for Arizona, so have my doubts that he had big problems at Clinton. Probably just overlooked because he played at Clinton.

Iowa doesn't overlook anyone from in-state based on where they play. We had 3 defensive line starters that played 8-man high school ball, for God's sake. Iowa was scouting Johnson until the very end and offered a grayshirt if my memory serves correctly.

Almost no one on the planet thought that this guy was good enough to play major college football, and that's a fact.

Oh my God, I guess everyone got it wrong. This wouldn't be the 1st time Iowa or some other school missed on a recruit. With Johnson playing in the NFL it's apparent that Iowa missed on him, " for God's sake."

Well if an assistant coach at Clinton is spewing garbage, I would rather listen to them, than some guy on a message board. I watched several of David's games when he was at Clinton. Yes he did take plays off. I am sorry but you did not see Shaun Beyer takes plays off for Kennedy this year. Did you see Jewell take plays off when he was in HS? NOPE. Pretty sure those guys played both ways as well.

David would line up and you knew when he wasn't getting the ball, because he would just stand there. I remember watching him do it not just 1 or 2 times a game. He did it a lot and (yes I get it, there are players who play both ways in HS). But the two examples above I never saw them do what David did, sorry.

He had some issues in HS, when he went to UNI he figured something out. Because you never saw him do it again. I am assuming the coaches got into his ear and made him realize he had a special opportunity to play for UNI. He was an elite talent in HS, but there was something there. How does a kid like that, not get any offers from the Big schools in the area?? I mean Beyer at Kennendy got offers from Iowa and ISU I know I shouldn't compare them, but DJ was twice the player as Beyer. How does that happen?

Sorry but DJ is a great kid and has improved TONS since HS. I realize all kids have an "attitude" in high school, but I just thought the way he handled himself some times was bad. He still looks smooth running the ball (it almost looks like he glides) when he runs. He is a great story and I am glad that Arians finally started to play him more. He is going to be a great RB in the pros.

Missed his talent? Sure.

Overlooked because of where he played? So stupid that it borders on retard-level.

Iowa knew where he was and actively recruited him, you moron.

It also helps that Andre E and CJ2K got hurt.

I'm guessing if one of the Clinton coach's was talking negatively about someone it wasn't David! Every team has its issues and I know there were players with attitude problems but he's wasn't one of them. In fact personally know one of his team mates and his parents. His parents have known him since middle school have nothing but good thing to say about him. He may have had issues with a rough family life but never with attitude. Smart hard working kid ...go back and read articles or watch interviews ...you will never see a bad attitude! I'm guessing the Davenport guy has a kid that was schooled by him....that's why he has an axe to grind. I think all of us as Iowans should be proud of him ...he will probably go down as one of the top 5 football players to ever come out of Iowa are there are people that want to dis him ....I find that very embarrassing!

Well beings David is only 10 years younger than me, I hope I don't have a kid that got schooled by him!!!! YIKES!

I don't have anything against the kid, all I am stating is facts that a coach told me. I also witnessed his "lazy" behavior in games when I watched Clinton go 11-0 that year. They were a neat story for the local newspaper and media. They got beat by Xavier i think? But they dominated the MAC that year.

All I am stating is he had some laziness issues and that I personally think kept him from getting recruited higher. He is a great story and will most definitely go down as one of the best players from Iowa. Hell I am a UNI grad who cheered for David while at UNI and I still root for him at Arizona.

Pretty sure there are others who witnessed his laziness in games as well. Personally it doesn't matter what I think, so I don't know you are getting so upset about it? I had a coach who coached at Clinton tell me and then when I watched him in person, I saw what the coach was talking about.

I don't know about the attitude problem, but there is a big difference between a 17 year old who is king at HS, and a 22 year old who's been told early on by his college coach to man up.
