December 22, 2015 Dual Impact Index p/b @NCOWrestling

Interesting to see another algorithm-based ranking. I do think a few tweaks are in order for any algorithm that ranks Imar 4th at 157.

Things I found interesting:
133 - Brock #1
149 - Kemerer #3, Max Thomsen #19, Stroker #25
157 - I-MAR #4
184 - Brooks #2
P4P - Sorenson #3

I-Mar's strength of schedule so far has been suspect. With both #'s 1 (Gantt) and possibly 3 (Miller) going to be at Midlands, I would expect that to shake itself out by the time the January 4th rankings (the next ones...there will be no new ranking next week) come out.

Wrestling is the one sport that doesn't need algorithm-based rankings. Everything gets settled on the mat. So because IMAR S.O.S. hasn't been as good, you don't have enough information to know that he's the best 157lber?

I hear what you're saying, pumpdog, but don't bash the whole thing because it needs a simple tweak. This and andegre's site are nice additions to the landscape. I think this one probably just needs less weight given to strength of schedule and more given to returning NCAA points or some other variable that more fully captures Imar's dominance. On the whole it's reasonably consistent with the human-based rankings, and to the extent that it can add something to the conversation that those rankings may overlook, I think that's great.

Sure, these are good for unknown up and coming individuals who we can only guess how'd they do. Or for P4P lists where obviously wrestlers aren't going to wrestle each other if they're not in the same weight class. I'll concede to that.

Pump is right in that everything gets settled on the mat. These rankings allow us all to geek out a little bit and give us something to talk about during the season. I'm guessing by the time March rolls around these rankings won't be too far off. Just a little skewed due to small sample size.

I would be curious as to how close the final one is to actual all americans

I would guess it'd be closest to the rankings going into the NCAA tournament. Crazy things happen every year at the tournament. Can't expect things like Moisey and Brewer to happen very often.

It does eliminate ranker bias, though. Consider FLO's #8 Manley (18-4) and #16 Thorn (17-4). Thorn has beaten FLO's #8 Manley 2x and #14 Cruz, while losing to the #1, 3, 6, and 11.
Manley has beaten the #9, 17, and 19, while losing to #16 Thorn 2x, D2 Nate Rodriguez, and teammate Barnes.

Other sites rank Thorn:
Open Mat.......7
AWP..............10
Intermat.........11
WR................11
SHP................11
WIN................12
WresStat.......13

PapaBear, yes, but it's a dual ranking made by matching up all of the teams' individuals against each other.
Like matching up all OSU individuals vs the Mizzou individuals?
See where I'm going here?
Other examples but this was 1st on the list going down.

Hey folks, this isn't a ranking...it's an index. An index gives you a relative comparison tool based on domination and strength of competition. Let's not get too bogged down into bashing it's value because these results are different from the eye test.
