Decommits and fan vitriol

Wouldn't it just make sense to eliminate the "verbal," and permit the athlete to sign a National Letter of Intent whenever he's ready to do so? Game over, end of story, locked up!

It's an interesting concept. Then you would have the issue of really hard sells going on, where the school pressures the kid on his unofficial or official visit that the scholarship offer is good only while the time they are on campus. You run into that a bit now, as a school will tell a guy they are recruiting several players at is position and the first one to commit gets the scholarship. There is no perfect scenario. The early signing period helps in that that it forces the big boys (Ohio State, Alabama, etc.) to make decisions on recruits sooner in the process.

You’d find out real quick who has commitable offers and who doesn’t. Probably wouldn’t be schools like ISU throwing out 300+ offers anymore. They might get that many after all said and done but not right away.

If you simply refuse to recognize verbals, they are magically eliminated :) I personally think signing days benefit the kids, and I think the kids deserve all the protections we can give them. They get pressured to verbally commit all the time and thankfully they have the ability to change their minds and do what's best for them after completing their reaearch.

I find the notion that kids could be pressured to sign a binding contract at anytime horrifying. The only ones who would benefit are the total jackass programs that currently have no integrity and bend or break the rules. A program like Iowa would suffer for sure.
