Defense?

It's hard to understand how she has a job when she insults every team she announces for because she doesn't know their names

I thought D looked pretty good overall. gave up A LOT of passes, but I guess it is the bend don't break mentality.

after the first drive where they carved us up until we stiffend and held them to field goal, they did not do much until mid third quarter. andI am not sure if that is because we were playing a little loose with a big lead or not.

but reall, only one true scoring drive all day did we give up (the one in the third quarter). the other "scoring drive" was a couple plays after they interecepted us.

OK, so its raining like cats and dogs in north texas so my DirecTV failed me.
I have seen Stanley's 6TD highlights, how did the D look today? Giving up 3 scores to IU is pretty good for us in any year. Any observations? Who played most of game at MLB?

D held it together. Dominated after IU's first drive until middle of the 3rd quarter. Welch went the whole way at MLB. There's yards to be gained against Iowa's pass defense, but considering two true freshmen are starting they did well.

It will be interesting to see what the staff does if/when NIemann and Hockaday are healthy. Iowa misses having Hooker at safety, he's the best safety we have in space. They probably won't play Stone in front of Gervase, but Stone looks really good. Won't complain about who they play, coaches are being aggressive and going after teams on both sides of ball.

Iowa had 2 4th down stops and 2 redone interceptions. It struck me that the red-zone D showed up today.

Lastly, the one of Indiana's TDs was set up by the interception by Stanley .... thus, they were caught in a tough spot against a pretty decent O. They at least made Indiana have to work for it.

Yeah, she did a bang-up job.

She let us know Amani Jones would be getting a targetting call next week. Also, at one point a graphic was put on the screen about Iowa's tight end production. It was for the season, but Beth said it was today's stats. At the time, our tight ends had over 600 yards, supposedly for the game.

D looked good but, as I said before, I don't think IN is near as good as many here kept saying.....

you don't get tv when it's raining? that is whack!

That was for the season, the game stat was below it. Confused me for a second too.

The dude sure was talking to TE Recruit and QB recruits.....liked to hear that!

yes, my thoughts exactly. I fear that you are correct.

they always come up with a good/great offense but never much of a defense. I kind of got the feeling from the Ohio State game that they had some semblance of a defense. Maybe not, though

I thought that the D had patches where they were playing soft ... but that was likely by design to some extent. Phil doesn't want our guys to get people behind them ... so that led to receptions. However, things did seem to tighten up in the red-zone.

The D still has a lot of room to improve ... but given all the personnel shuffling among the back-seven ... it's hard not to be pleased with the D.

What's even more mind boggling ... turnovers deep in our own territory have set up opposing Os with easy points ... no fewer than 4 TDs. That's an instance of our D being put in exceedingly tough situations. Without those ... the scoring D would be even better! And, mind you, our scoring D hasn't been too bad this year either!

I think we're discovering a lot of depth in the back 7. Idk what we're gonna do with it all when we get healthy, but it should be really good.

And they should Gervase played like crap today especially the first drive. He usually looks much better. Injury?

Agree. But we are playing kids ect.New combinations. So improving.Next week a good step forward with guys returning.D-line still KEY to continued sucess.Go Hawks.

D was pretty solid playing through adversity again. Indiana did not do a great job of taking advantage of their big receivers. They did look a little porous at times when going up 35-16 and after the Stan pick, but used the end zone to our advantage getting those 2 picks. OJ again proved to be a liability in pass coverage. No need for Amani Jones was a good sign.

I don't think he's injured. I thought he played his usual game, he's always in the right spot and is generally reliable tackler, although he did miss Ramsey in space on the TD run. He did have a good pick in the end zone in the 4th quarter. We sometimes get spoiled by how good Iowa's defense generally is, that when teams actually score points we think someone is screwing up or playing poorly. Sometimes the opponent is just good and makes plays too.

Like I said, the coaches have some real interesting choices to make once everyone is healthy. NIemann played very well before he got hurt. His spot, the OLB, is where Hooker has played the last 2 games giving Iowa the 4-2-5 alignment. I would think they want to get Niemann back on the field. Hooker is going to be on the field somewhere. Also with Hankins, when his hand injury heals enough to where he can really get back in there, who does he replace? Moss? I think so. I do think Brents is kind of locking down the other spot at corner.

But good problems to have. The D will be challenged with horizontal runs and the QB runs the next two weeks against Maryland and Penn State.
