Dennis Green, former University of Iowa running back passed away Thursday. Long time Hawkeye fans will remember Dennis as both a graduate assistant, and later as an assistant coach. I believe Dennis played under Coach Frank Lauterbur, and later was on the staff of Coach Bob Cummings.

I remember playing handball against Dennis on the upper level courts in the old Iowa fieldhouse. A game of singles or doubles would often include notable University of Iowa athletes; Sharm Shureueman, Jim Andrews, Lou Ginsburg, Don Cassidy or whomever was available to ‘fill-out the lineup card’. Dennis was a nonstop competitor, covering every inch of the court and diving for every attempted kill-shot. He undeniably had the heart of at lion!

At the conclusion of a battle against Dennis, he and I would frequently walk over to the wrestling room, which was on the opposite side of the fieldhouse, on the upper level. A single door to the wrestling room; both enter and exit. Dennis enjoyed watching the wresters drill, frequently commenting on the intensity of the competition. Dennis was always impressed with the nonstop action and never say quit attitude of the team. The life and times of University of Iowa great Dennis Green, he will be remembered well.

He did a pretty fair job with The Vikings too, but his teams didn't hold up in the playoffs very well. He was a controversial dude to be sure. But I sure would have welcomed him back instead of having Brad Childress and Leslie Frazier at the helm! R.I.P. Coach Green.

a lot of people only remember" they are who we thought they were", but denny had a long and respected career.one of my favorites.
