Does anyone think DK breaks the Iowa interception record this year? He has 6 in 7 games with 5 regular season games plus post season left. The record is 8 interceptions by Nile Kinnick and tied by Lou King in 1981. Plus, isn't it ironic, that the record was tied by a guy named King, could be broken by another guy named King, AND all three have a last name that starts with a "K"!

Maybe, I'm not sure he is going to get enough balls thrown his way. With Maybin strugglingl, I think offenses are going to continue to exploit that. If I had to guess, I would say King gets two more and ties the record.

This could be a minor stat that indicates how well the season goes. If Desmond continues to intercept and smashes the record, it's an indicator that we're in a major bowl- Rose or playoff. Reasoning IF this happened:
the D is too good to allow anything but passing, despite other teams scouting it; QBs are rushed into throwing, not being able to be selective with receivers, and King does his thing.

Hey Canada Hawk- may I ask where in this great country you are located? I'm in North York, just a few kilometers from the homes of CanadaHawks Tevaun and Faith...

Coincidental, yes! Ironic, not even close, just like 'rain on your wedding day' is not irony. But none the less, unless their opponents stop throwing his way, I think he has an excellent chance of breaking the record. His 'instincts' are about as good as I have seen in a long time. I didn't know what the record was or who had it, so thanks for sharing that with us.

Mabin is and has certainly made mistakes, but I think it's a stretch to say that he's struggling. He's doing a fine job, but teams aren't throwing King's way so his name is being called a lot more.

King is excellent at 'baiting' the QB into throws. He acts like he is going to 'sit down' in the flat like he's playing cover 2, but then quickly 'sinks' under the receiver. He's done that quite a few times. Prater got really good at that his senior year, but King probably does it better than any corner Iowa's had in my memory. He did get 'caught' doing it once that I remember when the Illinois receiver did a double move and Lomax was 'late' getting over the top. You have to really trust your safety in coverage to pull that move off.

Mabin is a GREAT athlete and very physical (remember some of his tackles this year?) but he still looks like he's 'thinking' out there (remember it's only his second year of ever playing corner, ever). When he becomes more 'instintive' and trusts his self, he will be one heck of a corner! Who knows when that 'lightbulb' will go off, but I believe it will before the end of the year as he gets more and more reps and more and more game time. I agree that 'struggling' is a stretch as he is winning a lot more 'battles' than he is losing, don't ya think.

Mabin was not very popluar in my section of Kinnick during the Illanoy game. Seemed every time they threw the ball it was at Mabin and he was nowhere near the WR.

Remind the folks in your section that they have to know what coverage Iowa was in before they know who is 'blowing' coverage. There were at least two times against Illinois that Fisher and Lomax were 'late' in coverage so Mabin had to make the play, thus many assume it was Mabin that 'blew' coverage which was not the case. Get what I mean? I'm not saying Mabin hasn't lost some battles and made some mistakes, just saying you have to know what you're looking at.

It is much easier to see things like that on TV than it is in real life. At least it is for me anyway. In real life there is so much more you can watch, whereas on TV it is all about the ball.

I think King and Mabin are like the late 90's duo of Tom Knight and Plez Atkins. Teams were scheming away from Knight so much that Plez was getting exposed. Plez wasn't probably as bad as it seemed because every pass was going his way. BTW the safeties in that backfield if I am correct were Kerry Cooks and Damien Robinson. Find the weak link.

Totally understand. And with TV you get to see it numerous times and from different angles, etc.
It's easier for me because I have been to so many of their clinics that I know when they are in cover2, or quarters coverage, or 1/4,1/4,1/2, or cover2-man under, and why, and also when they roll into cover3 and why, and I know everyones responsiblilty in each, etc...It really changes how you 'see' the game. If you want to mess with them next time they say something, ask them, "were they in 1/4,1/4,1/2 or cover3, did they have a cloud or sky call?

I used to be south of your area for awhile- trying to get back. Currently in Winnipeg. Lots of Ukrainians here if your heritage fits your handle.

Thanks, man. I took my daughter's family to Winnipeg from the States a couple of years ago, and really loved the diversity and physical beauty of the place - and did visit a Ukrainian Museum while I was there. And no, my heritage does not fit my handle - I was doing a Fulbright in Ukraine during the Orange Revolution eleven years ago, and writing a lot of dramatic and musical works. I lost my connection with this board that year - and the record of years of posting, too (man, it was tough to 'watch' the Hawks!), and had to create a new 'handle' - and UkraineHawk seemed good at the time. Am in Canada on leave now, directing four of my Ukrainian plays here among this huge diaspora. My day job is at a U in the Caribbean. Headed back in January. Hope I can time it right...

If he does, will we call it the KKK Club?

Yes: Maryland throws. Indiana throws. Minnesota will "have to" throw. Purdue, will they even show up? Nebraska can't run so their man Tommy will not disappoint.

Why wouldn't they throw at Mabin? You expect them to throw the majority side to who King is covering?

Another thing to keep in mind is we are going to see these teams trying to throw the ball because they have pass heavy offenses and they will have trouble running the ball against our D. As the weather starts to get colder, the harder it will be to throw the ball.

I don't think they were throwing at Mabin because they were throwing away from King. They were throwing at Mabin cuz the WR on that side of the field was usually open whether it was high fault or not...
