I know some on here will not take well to a PSU fan showing up here with this post and take it as condescending, but sincerely I mean this. Despite the score, match was extremely competitive and Iowa wrestled well. Stoll out probably means the end of any title hopes this year, but the Brands are great coaches, getting more bullets in the chamber and Iowa wrestled well.

125 - Probably a win for both teams, Gilman is the honcho at 125 and Suriano will be next year. Even though it was a 1 TD match and something could have gone wrong at the end, Gilman was the better wrestler clearly. But Suriano is no joke. Reminds me a bit of McDonough - Megaludis first year. Nico stayed in the first match, made some things hairy later on, but McDonough was better and came out on top every time. I'd expect the same will happen this season.

133 - Was as expected. Clearly many of levels difference between the two wrestlers, Carpenter is very outmatched. Both did a good job.

141 - For as much crap as he takes, Gulibon is a talented wrestler. More talented than Carton at this time. Carton did a great job early on, but Gulibon is better on his feet. For what was expected to be a hole for Iowa, Carton can score some points in March, he will beat some guys. Tough kid.

149 - Have always had great respect for Sorenson and he proved it again tonight. Last year I thought Zain would be better but there was a path for Sorenson to pull an upset, but it did not manifest until this match. I didn't see this path however. Nice job by Sorenson, he is better than Collica depite the result last week and should be a finalist.

157 - Kemerer is very good. Nolf is just better. Kemerer is still a rsFR he's got a lot of room to grow with his offense. There is not anyone who is going to do better against Nolf this year. Should be finalist.

165 - Nice job by Gunther who is unheralded but obviously tough and wrestled that way. Looked like he was going to be outclassed early, but found his groove digging that underhook which gave him a chance to be in the match. Nice adjustment.

174 - Meyer is a tough senior, takes some crap because he is uneven but came up big tonight. Senior'd Hall on that 2nd period takedown when Hall is looking to stalemate the action and put himself in a position to win. Great shot in the 3rd late to win it.

184 - Not much to say, it is what it is. Brooks is going to come to wrestle and Nickal is dangerous from everywhere.

197 - Wilcke made McCutcheon pay for being content to win a 3-2 match. Great duck in the 3rd. One criticism I may have here is he did not push the action besides the duck at all once McCutcheon went into cruise control. More aggressive in neutral he could have won the match in OT, he wasn't going to win it in TB and McCutcheon looked like he knew it. Could have made him pay again.

285 - Tough break for Stoll. Get healthy and come back next year.

Overall, Iowa wrestled tough, but needs more bullets in the chamber. Gilman and Clark are great. Kemerer will be, maybe Marinelli as well. Unfortunately only 3 of them in the lineup right now. Meyer and Brooks are tough seniors but not the type of guys that are elite. You need 5 or 6 of the elite guys to win it and then have other tough guys in your lineup which I think guys like Carton and Wilcke can be (would say Gunther, but not sure he will be in lineup in future). Brands has his guys ready to wrestle you tough and recruiting is on the uptick so Iowa has to get to the point where you have Kemerer, Marinelli, Warner, Teasdale, Lee in the lineup and then fill in around them with other tough guys.

Great respect for Brands as I think most PSU'ers and wrestling fans do, they are great for wrestling. We think we have a great coach and I'm sure you guys do too. We're both right.

I was about to pull a trigger on these similar words.

I agree with most of what you said. Iowa actually has 5 really good wrestlers not 3. Unfortunately our heavy is out. That dropped us down to 4. Now out of those four 2 were up against almost unbeatable guys. Although 149 was very close. So now we have 2 studs with an honest chance and they won. If our studs weren't up against PSUs better studs the outcome would have been much different. Say we had our studs at 141, 165 then its 5 and five. We just don't match up well with PSU.
OSU was different. 2 of our studs lost and could have easily won. We match up much better with OSU. I feel PSU is better than OSU. And will win it all.

Yes, sorry I missed Sorenson on the list of elite wrestlers, clearly an oversight - he is elite. Four great wrestlers in the lineup, not sure Stoll would have made it 5 this year, still one guy short IMO for this year.

And from a fan perspective, even though I think Iowa's title shot is done, no reason to give up hope. Zero margin for error and need some serious stumbles from other teams but that's why we are all fans.

Hard to tell about an injured guy 2 years in a row. Moot for now as he is done for the year, and maybe forever. McD is a prime example of an injured wrestler and how it goes.

Tom Brands was sure down at the press conference. My only big disappointments tonight were Carton being completely broke in the third, as well as with Holloway.

ditto... giving up 10 TD's in the 3rd period (4 by Carton, 6 by Holloway) was painful to watch.

The meet certainly had its bright spot - Hall getting his RS pulled, and then losing to Meyer was awesome. Nice to see Sorenson close the gap, but bittersweet to come up short in OT.

You have some really good bullets-as you say- coming or there from east of you. Very good.

Great and classy post - pretty accurate on all fronts Diceman.

Biggest disappointment of the night is Stoll going down. That absolutely hurts us in making a run this March. I think Dice speaking to recruiting is the biggest challenge to PSU. Gavin signs on the dotted line and we're in good shape for future battles against PSU.

Nice post. I left more optimistic than pessimistic... The fans definitely got their moneys worth tonight. Great dual in the greatest environment.
I agree. As invincible as PSU seems, I feel stronger that some of our guys can legitimately beat their #1s.

I agree. After that dual I feel better than I did before it. I only thought we'd win 2 matches and we won 3. That was a big win for Meyer.

That is the Sorenson everyone has been dying to see and I loved it!!

Nolf is a beast. Kem hung in there really well.

I didn't expect Brooks to beat Nickal and I didn't expect it to even be close. Brooks is in the tier battling for 3rd at this weight and that's fine.

Wilcke did better than I thought, although I think that is partially due to McCutcheon being a bit overrated.

Suriano is the main road block in the way for Gilmans national title. He's going to have to grind out wins against him every time. That's a good win.

Yeah cartons conditioning has served him well until yesterday. He needs to make an adjustment - guilbon used the same takedown over and over.

Carton gassing was a big surprise for me. I didn't see that coming. Other than that there were a lot of positives.

Gunther and Wilcke need to pull the trigger more. Both guys were working their ties very well and controlling position the last two periods. Just need to actually use it and keep firing off shots. Joeseph and McCutcheon were hanging on by a thread and we let them off the hook.

Easy for me to say from my couch I guess.
