Devonte Young?

I have absolutely no inside info and I haven't heard about an injury but it feels like a Derrick Mitchell situation to me -absent the playing time. In other words, he has been eclipsed by newcomers or younger players. Easley and Smith-Marsette obviously and Brandon Smith also maybe even Cooper. Just part speculation and part objective reasoning on my part.. Same for Falconer. Time will tell if he can work his way back into contention for playing time.

Not on KR anymore or in WR Top 6, is he hurt or has just been demoted/passed over?

I think he is still on return but he is one of the up men. He is on the field for a lot of special teams but that is about it that I have noticed

On somewhat the same topic... interesting how Matt Vandeberg is no longer the "go-to" guy he was. He's 4th in receptions (3rd in yards) A good season, for sure...but a quiet one by comparison. Probably a good thing overall for the offense.

It is because of change of position. Just look at what Easley is doing and those would be Vandeberg's numbers.

Good point, Meerkat still doesn't look to be 100%, seems to have a hitch in his giddy up still.

Devonte is still one of the two deep guys, but is the "up" one of the two. And he is the left guy, which seems to mean the ball never comes to him.

WR Young is another one that needed a RS year. he will play more next season but it may only be on ST's which is just as necessary as the other parts of the team.

If you refer to the participation section, you'll find that DeVonte has contributed in all 9 games.

Football is all about competition. DeVonte is capable of working his way up the depth chart ... but that will depend on his consistency and his development. By being a regular contributor on special teams, he certainly must have the trust of the coaches. Sometimes you have to keep on pushing and do all you can to expand your game. If he does that ... I can still see him earning an expanded role and contributing on the O.

For MvB, he seems affected by the QB change. CJ looked to him all the time, especially when Kittle was absent. Stanley seems like like his other options a bit better.

I really think other teams have keyed on MVb knowing he's the only proven wr. Both his catches Saturday were in small windows. Now with the TEs getting open it will give the defenses another problem and hopefully create some more opportunities for Matt. The best part is I don't think Stanley has a 'favorite'. He goes through his progressions and most of the time makes the correct throw. I just hope this team can maintain and even build on what happened against osu. Time will tell.

There will be a lot of competition for playing time. I hope at least two guys come forward that can catch. Not impressed with Freshman drops/fumbles this year so far. ISM would be good if he catch the ball and protect it, he's got terrific speed. I like Smith's size, but same story.

He's in his second season, how would a RS year have helped him?

MVB is is a heck of a guy and I wish him nothing but the best, but this right here is awesome for the program moving fwd. Easley seems to have been his safety blanket early and by the time Nick is gone he will be comfortable with everybody. Good things ladies and gents.

he would be a RSFR this season, some players do need that extra year to develop physically and mentally. even Wadley red shirted and look at how he turned out.

the coaches wanted Lattimore to red shirt but he wanted to play now, others that red shirted and look at how they turned out
DT Johnson
DT Ekakite
OL Blythe
OL Scherff
OL Donall
the list is long and I am not going thru the entire list but these should be enough to get your attention of how a red shirt helps.

Your point might be more valid if you didn't use a bunch of 4* linemen ;)

actually it just makes my point more valid if a 4* needs a red shirt then I guess a 2* WR just might need a red shirt year as well.

1) Explain to me why being a RSFR vs a SO makes any bit of difference, right now this year. It doesn't. I was calling out your failed logic.

2) OL is vastly different than WR

3) Do you want me to list a bunch of great former Hawkeyes that did not redshirt? They exist.

Wadley red shirted, Snyder RS'd, Mabin who is in the NFL RS'd, RB Young RS'd, CJ RS'd, JR RS'd, TE Hochenson RS'd and none of them are OL or DT's
your logic is the one that is a failure,

Match-up wise, the opponents #1 defender likely on Vandy, #2 on Easley, #3 on Noah likely against stronger line-up of teams on our schedule. Vandy has dropped a lot more passes this year too, not as reliable as with CJ (although he did seem better against OSU). I hope Wisky falls asleep on Vandy.

Seems like MVB best year was the year with Hiller and Smith.. he’s had some tough luck with being the “guy” with the injuries he’s maybe lost a step or two and with Stanley being qb mvb is not his favorite target but on the note Stanley for the most part throws it to who he thinks is open. We’ve had a decent amount of drops by wr’s and Te’s this year so i don’t think he really has established a “favorite” target.. but hopefully matt can fight threw it and no dropped balls Saturday for the whole bunch!

Makes no difference because instead of being a sophomore and getting passed up by true freshmen, he would have been a redshirt freshman and getting passed up by true freshmen.

Firstly, why do the stars matter? Secondly, usually redshirts are tied to physical development OR waiting for depth at a position-group to thin out.

In 2016, Iowa's depth was nil at WR and DeVonte is a guy who is physically stacked (strong kid). Thus, the fact that he didn't redshirt could have helped him ... because then he had an opportunity to work with our top WRs and learn the O. The curve ball that ended up getting thrown that arguably impacted his development was that he needed to then have a new position coach AND he needed to learn a new O. Coming out of the spring (with his spring-game performance) and given his experience ... he may have expected that he'd be one of our lead WRs in '17. Thus, when the hungry young WRs hit campus during the summer .... he may have gotten caught flat-footed. It's a classic mistake that many players make ... they let off the gas ... and then other players pass them by.

I cannot speak for what will ultimately happen ... but given the coming bowl prep, given the coming spring camp, ... as we look to next season, I don't see guys repeating that mistake. The WR room is back to having decent numbers ... and we'll be getting a new batch of talented young guys in the summer. They know now that you have to move forward ... or you get passed by. As Copeland has been telling them now ... you are what your film says you are. So if they want to think that they're special ... they better get it on film!
