DeVries NOT a candidate for Iowa job. Ben McCollum the next Iowa Head Coach?

QUESTION:
With the portal opening on Monday, how important is it for schools to have a head coach in place?

In answering this question, let’s suppose Drake beats Texas Tech on Saturday to advance into the Sweet 16, meaning Ben McCollum is not available for at least another week.

For schools interested in McCollum, do you keep waiting?

For Iowa, I think you absolutely do, without question. With his track record of success, and Iowa roots, McCollum is nearly a perfect fit for the Hawkeyes.

But what about West Virginia, where some reports list Jerrod Calhoun and Chester Frazier as favorites (along with McCollum) for that job? With Utah State’s loss last night to UCLA, Calhoun is available to hire right now. If they wished, West Virginia could have Calhoun in the office on Monday, contacting portal entries and other recruits (including the top high school player in WVa, who just decommitted from the Mountaineers).

For West Virginia, I don’t think the answer is quite so easy. There might be an advantage on their end to make a move now.

Of course, these ADs aren’t feeling their way in the dark, like we are. They are certainly having back channel conversations with their coaching candidates, and have some idea of each coach’s real interest in their school. At the end of the day, those conversations are going to guide their decisions. And if Drake loses to Texas Tech, the McCollum sweepstakes will be in full gear immediately.

But either way, if news starts coming out this weekend that West Virginia is moving on Calhoun (who used to be a Mountaineer assistant, btw), it could signal good news for the Hawkeyes.

Wade probably told his players that it was a tryout for NC State (for those who have eligibility left).

He has apparently encouraged them to use the tournament as an audition for the portal next year and has been really open and encouraging with them all year about trying to help them transfer up. I think the controversy with him is very overblown. It seems like everyone involved understood the deal and was fine with it. It's not like he is the first coach to interview for accept a job while his team was still playing, he was just actually honest about it instead of lying and then getting announced for a new job a day after his team gets bounced

Its interesting how these coaches that break NCAA rules and get fired make their way back to high paying jobs.

those rules mostly don't apply anymore who cares

Ben McCollum quote "NIL? I don't need no stinking NIL. I win with D2 players by outcoaching the opposition!"

BTW, does anyone know what Drake's NIL situation is this year? Next? I know it's a private school and they probably don't share this, but thought someone may know.

I just got up. Could you tell me where I am wrong instead of just insulting me.
Let's bring back Barta. Fundraising was supposedly his specialty.
Fundraising is the ADs primary daily job. You cannot accomplish a god damn thing without money. Millions and millions and millions of dollars. I didn't reference Goetz, and I was happy to move on from Barta, but Goetz is proven to be a poor fund raiser. Goetz comes off looking better because the total numbers conflate what she actually raised and what the Big Ten's media package paid out.
How much has she raised in the 14 months she's been on the job? Sounds like you're in the know.
Why don't you just look it up, if you think you know more than I know---because you don't. Then subtract the money the Big Ten raised for all members.

There is also a baseline minimum. It doesn't matter how much money one raises if it's insufficient to minimal need. Do you think Iowa has as much money as we need to compete? In the new Big Ten? If you agree that we do not have sufficient money to fund a contemporary Big Ten MBB program then why be so confrontational...we agree. I would seriously think you insane if you think Iowa has enough money to compete in the 2025 spending environment.

Why don't all you guys make a list of Iowa's MBB assets and liabilities? Try to track reality and not just a personal data defying preference.

When you said that the future is bleak, it caught Roscoe's attention lol.

WVU fans pretty bullish that they will land BM.

Apparently the ad is very tight with BM. But not sure that will be enough to get him to Morgantown

Sucks that this is such a toss up still

Their fans are a lot more bullish than anyone who actually covers the team is. The most any reporter will say is that WVU will try hard to hire him, everyone seems to acknowledge that Iowa is still the favorite
