Dezmon Briscoe commits

For those keeping score - we will have two playable guards on the roster next year once Thelwell graduates.

We signed one guard in 2023 class. Zero guards in 2024. And have zero signed in 2025.

This looks like a fine player. But we already have a stretch big signed. I don’t have any clue wtf Fran is doing in terms of roster construction.

6'8" and up zone monster team to put the Cuse teams of old to shame. Offense will figure itself out. (Sarcasm. Maybe)

I don't suppose Fran may be looking to add an experienced guard from the portal?

Is the ‘25 season starting tomorrow? Relax, Fran will bring in guards.

Absolutely. We've been talking about this issue in the back court for three years now. You would have thought Fran learned a lesson against Oregon in the tourney. You MUST have athletic guards to move on in the NCAA tourney.

The issue is this isn't a one year deal. We've been under manned , and frequently what back court players we do have are borderline D1 players. (Josh Dix the exception). When is the last time Fran had a guard be 1st team all B1G? Peter Jok in 2017?

Why would you think he wouldn't? He has used the portal every single year. The pessimism and negative what if's get old.
I'm not saying he won't sign someone. Will it be someone who could end up being an all conference 1st team level player? As I said the last time we had a guard be 1st team all B1G was Jok in 2017. You need top notch guard play to get to the sweet 16 and beyond, which is a big reason we never get near that level.

1st off this seems like good news--getting a roster full of scholly players and fewer walk-ons seems like a good idea. This guy also looked at Butler, so maybe Fran is collecting guys he can take with him to Butler to play with Jack.

Yes I agree with your post. Jok is about it. Jok played the "3" for us and was good rebounder but not the quickest guy. I'd take guys like Gilbert, Jones, and Lipsey from Iowa State---but that requires running a system of B-ball that values defense/rebounding.

Fran is in 100% in with Harding--sure Harding is someone easy to root for, the underdog based on his pedigree. I Hope Harding breaks all the stereotypes. We are the only university supplying Caucasian Cornerbacks to NFL, so let's hope Fran can do for the PG position what Phil did for CB. The problem would be Harding lacks size for his position.

Meanwhile I'm not sure Dix will stick around another year when he would have opportunities to make a lot more money. Depends on if the NCAA revenue sharing plan gets approved and suddenly Iowa B-ball goes from ghetto NIL money to Middle Class NIL money.

I don't see Fran as a good CEO/CFO running the NIL treasury.

Fran’s strategy is to sign the best players he can get regardless of position. For some reason he can’t get guards to come here even though it is a great offense for a guard.
frans system is great for guards when you look superficially. There is a reason he ran off any other guard that penetrated. Fran will get some interest and keep it because by all accounts he's a fun guy and his offense scores points. When potential guards look deeper, they see cause for concern.
No guard in the country wants to be handcuffed and told to be a perimeter passer while waiting for screeners to get other people open shoots. Athletic guards, the ones that play the second weekend, want to penetrate and pick and roll.

I kind of doubt that Dix would bail on the Hawks for his final season. He has a green light to shoot and can be the team leader next year.

I think this is the best group of guards that Fran has ever had. Losing Thelwell is going to hurt, but if Fran can pick up a decent guard off the portal I like what they have with Dix and Harding returning.
The problem Iowa is having this year is that they're being overwhelmed inside on the defensive end of the court. Maybe replacing Sandfort with Traore will be the solution to that. They need someone alongside Freeman because he hasn't shown this year that he can be the inside defensive force and rebounder that Iowa needs.

Fran has a guard visiting in January who is a Top 40 prospect in the country, but don’t let that get in the way of the incessant bitching.
Joshua Lewis?

First of all, that guy is listed as a 6’7” Forward on every site I’ve seen. So, no, I don’t believe he will solve the guard issue.

Second, Fran has literally NEVER signed a top-50 player who wasn’t from the state of Iowa. He’s had plenty visit, none sign.

If that suddenly changes in Fran’s 15th season, then I will happily eat crow in here. But I’m not holding my breath for Lewis to fix the massive guard problem on our roster
