Went to Madison for game yesterday and actually had to leave after 3rd quarter for fear of my safety.

I watched the 4th quarter in a bar and people there were cool, but it got pretty dangerous at the stadium. I would not go there again....

I was fine there but I my tickets were by older season ticket holders. Everyone we were by was very nice. Apparently after the game some wisconsin frat boy knocked out a 15 year old Iowa fan

Sounds like you did the right thing by getting out before 4th qtr. Wisconsin had three TD's called back in 4th....fans had to be furious. Great win though!

They have turned into a spoiled fan base. They have had some great short term runs but it has fueled entitlement. They need to go through some difficult times again to remember how difficult success is to achieve. Iowa fans know this very well the prior 5 years.

We had a great time but were with older fan base too. Wisconsin is one of my fav places to go though usu super fun and a great atmosphere. Sorry to hear you ran into a knucklehead Badger fan - realistically we all have those in our fan bases. I'm assuming of course you weren't antagonizing the opponent fans?

But mostly found the badger fans to be great and knowledgable -and I'm sure most of their fans wouldn't support that treatment of visiting fans

The worse place for fans in the Big Ten is Ohio State. I was cheering after Iowa scored a touchdown and one of their fans asked me to step outside. Another fan was so stupid he kept saying "Ohio" ain't going to win.

I'm guessing the OP was being pelted with snowballs during the game. Wisconsin fans are notoriously inhospitable, and when given snow to make snowballs, I am not surprised that they might use that to harass opposing fans/players. It's not limited to just Wisconsin fans that would do this either - sporting events often bring out the worst behavior in people.

Have been to Wiscy several times. Learned to take a rental w/non Iowa plates. Their fans are drunken buffoons. Haven't had the please of being antagonized but have had cars vandalized.

They had to move wisky cheerleaders because own fans were throwing snowballs at them throughout the game. Every fan base has some A hole fans, some more than others...

I have had my life threatened in Madison. I've been spit on, told to go the f*** home. I've been pushed and screamed at. This year.........not one problem. Their fan base thinks they are elite like OSU, Alabama, USC etc. They aren't.

At the 1991 Iowa-Mn game 75 people were arrested for throwing snowballs at officials.

To the OP... It's unfortunate when people get that mob mentality and decide to act out on opposing fans. They feel in their "comfort zone" and sadly some people are simply aholes. Every fan base has them ... Including the Hawkeyes (seen it on several occasions)... Sounds like you did the right thing by just stepping away from the situation... Sorry to hear about the experience... I simply despise when people do that stuff... Says all you need to know about them as people.

I've been treated very nicely in 3 trips, all games won by the Hawkeyes. Agree with above poster that every fan base has some rotten apples but for the most part people are OK. I'm NOT saying this about the OP, but I find that there are certain people who seem to have an awful lot of trouble at other stadiums. Coincidence? Hmm....

I have never had a speck of trouble anywhere but Madison and I have been to all of them except Rutgers and Maryland. For the most part, most fans are pretty good.

I went to the Maryland game last year. Their fans were awesome. We tailgated with some Maryland fans whom we met for the first time before the game. Nobody heckled us and nothing was vandalized. Granted, they're a basketball school and their tailgate is nothing like some other teams in the B1G. I would expect about the same at Rutgers. They aren't good at any major sports.

I basically decided no more road games after fearing for my safety at Arizona 2010. There are jerks every where, including Kinnick.

I was at Kinnick yesterday, and saw Iowa fans throw snowballs at, and hit:

Opposing fans
Opposing players
Purdue's mascot
Officials
Our OWN cheerleaders
Our OWN mascot

I lived for two years in Wisconsin, metro area of over 100k. I have never seen such a concentration of drunkards behaving badly as far as public places - in my entire life. I hated going to most places that served booze in that state.

And if the home team got beat, watch out.

Now, obviously, there were numerous exceptions that were very fun to be at with lots and lots of people in public settings (Brewers baseball usually was fantastic from a home team fans aspect versus opponent fans - most concerts were great too)...but overall I thought it was a hard place to party yet feel supremely safe and have fun. I always kept my head on a swivel.

The 3 Badgers events I went to left me uneasy each time. Wasn't wearing Iowa gear nor being obnoxious to them in any way. Never stood and cheered, we just sat in our seat and kept a low profile.

We knew better, knowing how our experiences often went around where we lived...bars, parties, sometimes camping too.

I remember my first year there, a buddy and I went to a Super Bowl party. Steelers/Cowboys in the 90's I believe, the Switzer championship year - I believe Dallas beat out Green Bay in the playoffs that year.

Deion Sanders played for Dallas.

Unknown to us, when the game started - most everybody there brought a stuffed monkey doll of sorts to the party. Every time Deion was on the TV, they'd throw all the monkeys at the TV. The host had his children then collect them and pass them back out for the next appearance.

We left shortly after halftime. The game started getting out of hand towards Dallas, and the mood got ugly.

Pepper spray is a weapon...but I'd be inclined to take the risk. Actually I'd use Bear spray...Mace and Capsaicin.

Badger fans are the worst--an embarrassment to the conference.

I've seen Iowa fans treated horribly on the road and I've seen Iowans treat opposing fans horribly. And every time the fan being abused was being a dick. Doesn't mean they should be hurt. Just sayin..

I have been to a handful of games where my team has been the away team.

Typically, if you respect the environment you are in you will be fine. Went to a Bears game in chicago. The team I have rooting interest in is not in the same division. I had an overall pleasant experience tailgating and whatnot. Wasn't even harassed in the game wearing clothing with the opposing team logo on it. Was invited over to a few tailgates for some grub while on my way to and from the bathroom beforehand Just had one brief, bad encounter after the game, but wasn't enough to make a bad impression.

I brought a good friend of mine from badgerland to the wisconsin game in 2010. He did not wear any wisconsin related clothing (or red). He had shoulder surgery shortly before, and so he didn't want to be a target for some drunken A-hole just for wearing Badgers stuff

As far a visiting fans go, I gotta respect people who will wear their teams colors, and cheer for their team in a hostile environment. They choose to come to your community and spend their dollars to follow their team.
