Did you spend ~80k on your kids first car?

I had a 2017 Honda Ridgeline that I was planning on giving to my son when he turned 16. It would have been about 11 years old, but fully loaded for the year it was built.

Then some 16 year old kid staring at his phone blasted into my back end at highway speed while I was stopped. Luckily my son and I, along with the kid, were fine. But the truck was totaled. Ended up getting a Passport that was a year old, former dealer loaner. My plan is still for him to get this one, it will be about 5 or 6 years old at that point. Not what I wanted to do, but once again it has all of the safety features at least.

Bought a Buick Encore GX ST AWD for Dear Daughter Doodle about a year and a half ago for a little over $30k cash money.

Does that put Doodle and Mrs. D (no pic) in the good parent bucket or the bad parent bucket?

I have handed down two cars with 100k and 260k miles. About to hand down a third with 110k miles. Have never spent more than $30k on a car for my own use.

1983. Jamie Gagan was gifted a BMW 633csi for his 16th birthday.
Meanwhile myself and two friends get shoehorned into the back seat of a Rabbit for our daily 30 minute ride home from high school.

With insurance as high as it is, hell no. They will likely get one of our cars that has been used for 4-5 years. My son is 11, and most likely will get my wifes Encore.

So, you’re saying the 2002 F150 I’m driving wouldn’t cut it for your spoiled kids 😊

We actually didn't trade in our old vehicle when we got a new one because we will have a new driver in a couple of years. The car is still in excellent condition and runs well. The trade in value wasn't great and it is cheaper to keep this car than it would be to buy another car in a couple years. At least one that runs well enough that I wouldn't mind my kid driving around in it.

Not sure a truck would be what I would want but the year doesn’t really bother me. Here though I will be taking a vehicle worth 12.5 to 15k on trade in value to give to my kid. Good safety ratings and overall solid enough car.

Got my first car in 1976. It was a 1967 4 door Chevelle we (my parents and I) bought from an farmer who inherited the car when his brother died for $1000. Loved that car. Got it a few months before I turned 16. Probably washed and waxed it every other day until I could legally drive it. Looked just like this color and all:

I bet that went over 100 mph.

We have spent $10-15k a piece so far for two kids.

I tell them it needs to last until they graduate college and get a job.

I want them to have a safe and reliable car until then.

Last kid is hitting 16 this year. Ugh, another purchase.

I spent 6k on a Hyundai Veloster for my daughter. She had it 6 weeks and some kid rear-ended her (his fault) with his mom's Escalade and totaled it. Insurance money paid for her next car which is a Kia Soul.

So I live in an upper middle class town but my job is next to a wealthy town. So I end up getting lunch at the same places lots of the high school. Kids are eating at on their breaks. Today there was a teenage girl driving a BMW X6 with a bumper sticker that said caution new driver. It’s probably not the most expensive vehicle. I’ve seen one of these kids driving. They’re often high-performance vehicles. Couple weeks back one of them drove their BMW into a median at 100 miles an hour and killed himself in his passenger. We bought our kids safe vehicles something not too fast with good safety ratings not rocket ships.
Oh, naw.
Used Subarus so they could bump into a few things and not be a big deal.

Looks slow and safe. That’s a win.

I would bet 15 kids on my team have trucks that cost over $80k. It’s ridiculous. My son has one of them. Except I got it for $6k from a player that was leaving for college. 2013 GMC Sierra with all the bells and whistles. Nicer than my POS for sure.

My kids had what would be considered a very nice car. It stuck out in the HS parking lot. But it was my old one, extremely well serviced and maintained, I wasn't going to get what it was worth by selling/trading it, and it had to go somewhere. They did have to pay for gas and insurance though...

I saw a girl who routinely doesn't show up to school driving a new Mercedes. Doesn't show up because she doesn't feel like it and gets rewarded with something like that. What a world we live in...

My current 18 year old drove a 2006 volvo XC70. It's the same car that drove him home from the hospital. Motor crapped out at 170K. He now drives the wife's hand me down 2016 Honda Pilot. Will be interesting to see what we do with the Tesla and Rivian since we switched to all electric.
